'04 TL Timing Belt cost

Just came back from a trip to the dealer and he told me that the timing belt on my new TL (bought used at 123k) hadn't been done.

He quoted me ~1200 for the belt and PS pump. I called around to the Honda dealership and they quoted me 1800, while a couple other shops around here have all quoted me 1k to 1200. Is that really the going rate for this kind of work?

I saw threads where people got the work done for $600, but those were a bit older. Just wondering if anybody has had this sort of work done recently and how much it set them back.

FWIW I'm in the Chicagoland area.

pohljm 03-06-2015 01:06 PM

I paid $400 labor and brought my own parts recently

TLtrigirl 03-06-2015 03:36 PM

yes that's the going rate. indy shops probably run $7-900. acura dealers easily $1200. honda dealers may offer "specials" and that gets it down to "$4-600 range when normally it would be closer to $900-1K.

parts alone can run about $300 (OEM, TB/water pump and tensioners)...add in all day labor depending on who's doing it.

lastly, prices may vary by region as well.

YeuEmMaiMai 03-06-2015 03:36 PM

I did my belt in 2013 and it was $93X at Whitebear Acura Subaru

anx1300c 03-06-2015 10:03 PM

Did you mean timing belt and water pump or is your power steering pump bad too? I'm guessing the former, because the power steering pump alone is over $400 retail.

You didn't verify that the 105K service had been done before you bought the car?

How could they tell that the belt hadn't been replaced?

Dealer told me there was seepage around the PS pump. Offered to replace that w/the timing belt since it involves the same labor.

I didn't verify it. Guy I bought it from was just flipping it so he didn't know about the service history. No mention of a timing belt change on the CarFax either.

I'm honestly not sure how they could tell. They mentioned something about seeing something that was all stock when they took a look and they said it needed to be replaced.

I wish there was a way to find out if it had been changed. Unfortunately it's a big enough maintenance piece that I'm likely going to have to just bite the bullet and get it done.

michaelap95 03-08-2015 07:26 PM

Which dealer, or where do you reside? You can get the parts for much cheaper online, but i doubt acura would install it.

TLtrigirl 03-08-2015 07:36 PM

^^dealer would install. they just won't guarantee the parts if they fail. i've had my dealer install a few things for me (aftermarket parts included), no questions asked. they would rather make something than nothing (at least they should).

Oqudsi 03-11-2015 09:22 PM

Ended up going to a guy out in Wilmette that I've seen recommended around. Did my timing belt maintenance, replaced the power steering hose/seals, and replaced the front and side motor mounts. Bill came out to 1300 total.

Hefty price but I got a decent deal on the car in the first place. All told, 6500 for an '04 DGP TL w/125k that now has its most major maintenance done. Now I just need to save up a little bit and start sweetening her up.

ThaiDoan 03-11-2015 10:41 PM

I got the same problem

I went to the Acura dealership to do the inspection. And they quoted me to do the PS and the timing belt for $1,800. Anyone have any experiences anout these kinds of problem please help. Thanks

anx1300c 03-11-2015 11:43 PM

Do you guys realize there is a recall for the power steering hose? You shouldn't be paying a dime to have that replaced.

You are crazy if you think a independent auto repair shop is going to perform a recall on your vehicle for free

You guy will be surprise how many people out there do not know about the PS hose recall, when I pulling in my "people" garage I saw many Honda line up for the PS hose repair and non of them should pay a dime. But independent shop mean more $$$$ in their pocket.

Yeah, I know that. He did not charge me for the power steering fix.

Just did timing belt + water pump change on my TL 2004 today. I also changed the driving belt. Don't go to dealer, too expensive. I asked for timing belt and water pump and they charged me $1200. Then they added spark plugs ($320) and valve adjust ($612) totaly $2212. The guy tried to be niced and gave me 10% off so I only needed to pay $1996.80

I went to my friend's shop. He changed everything for me (timing belt kit (Gates) with water pump + driving belt ($25) + 6 spark plugs (Denso)) for $525. I should be a bit higher for you, but not gonna be $1000.

motoxkfx 03-13-2015 02:48 PM

only payed 350 for labor and 152 for parts. total of 502 said and done.

JPerkMr954 03-13-2015 04:25 PM

I have an 05.... I just bought a power steering kit from Amazon after research on here... with a drive belt.... and spark plugs that was just about 250... I just need to buy cam seal and crank seal... another 20... this can be done for under 600 it seems with labor....

I'm pretty sure that recall is only for 07 and 08 TL, not for older models.

TLtrigirl 03-14-2015 08:28 AM

^^^there was a recall for the 04-06 models prior to the 07-08.

nfnsquared 03-14-2015 08:37 AM

Yup, 04-08...

krutou 03-15-2015 12:41 AM

A couple months ago, there was a sale and it was being offered at the dealership for $900

Two separate recalls. All 3Gs are affected/covered, 04-08.

dhasselbacher 03-17-2015 08:51 PM

You guys will love this story.

So I took my '05 TL into the Stealership today for an A13 service at 78,876 miles. I actually had them do the B13 since I wanted more done.

Service advisor calls me after 3 hours or so and says the car is about done but they do have a list of recommendations. So he proceeds to rattle off this entire list all at once:

Battery - $170 (I'm on my 4th battery due to the HFL/Bluetooth module failure that kept draining battery. By the time I found the TSB for it it was out of warranty and too late so I just disconnected it a few years ago. They said it's failing the load test yet it cranks just fine but I'll do it myself.

Timing Belt pkg - $1,600 He said it's 2 years past due and I said your full of crap.

Power Steering Pump - $651.20

Power Steering Flush - $140

Brake Fluid Flush - $130

Right Front Strut is leaking and they recommend replacing both for a nice sum of $928.

Overall that's over $3,500 for everything. I told him no way on any of it and I've never even been presented with that much work all at once ever before. You think they need the service business or what?!?

I'm close to getting rid of it anyway so I'm not spending that much on it. I'm going to keep a close eye on things and fix what's necessary before I sell it or trade it in.

I almost told the guy - the least you could do is buy me dinner before you stick it to me like that. I'm tempted to take it to an indie shop I know just to see what their evaluation is compared to the Stealership.

AMG149 03-17-2015 10:47 PM

the dealer was trying to charge me 1300 for the job so i went and bought all the parts (timing belt kit including water pump, oil, oil filter, antifreeze, accessory belt, spark plugs) and i gave them to my mechanic who charged me $275 to put everything in and it's been great so far for the last 3 weeks the most expensive thing was the timing belt kit and it costed me like $150 on amazon i got the gates timing belt kit which is OEM except for the water pump but i'll live with that

Nothing to worry about. I have 85K on the Gates kit with no issues

Advance Auto Clinic in Wilmette will do it for ~800. OEM parts.

-DM- 03-20-2015 02:35 PM

I got my timing belt, water pump, spark plugs, oil, and t-fluid changed for 1k with all OEM parts. My mechanic is awesome though. If my memory serves me correctly, he did everything in less than 4 hours. Mobile mechanic too.

You stated the PS pump with the timing belt replacement, did you mean water pump? If so the WP is normally changed with the timing belt replacement since they are so close together it is just smart money to do them at the same time. That being said if the power steering pump needs replaced the amount quoted is a little high, but within the range of 'financially tolerable '. Try checking around, I got my timing belt and water pump, plugs, and serpentine belt replaced for $900 cash... Good luck!

Thankyou Much

I already ordered a Kit on AMAZON with all OEM
Parts except the Timing belt--Mitsubishi made in Thailand.
Payed $189 for TB, WP, Barrings. And ordered a new Thermostat
And gasket. Wondering if that guy in Wilmet would do it ?
Also :
Q: Should I buy an OEM TB ? To replace the Mitsubishi TB ?
It would be nice if you Guys/Gals had your Location :)

After reading all this nonsense about dealerships charging so much for a timing belt package I just don't get it......

Local NJ acura dealer near me charges and advertises only $599 for timing belt/water pump/drivebelt, coolant, service with all OEM parts.

So how do they get away charging $1200?$1000? $1600??

Seriously PM me and I'll show you the way.

Add in hydraulic tensioner $125 , idler bearing $50, adjuster $125 and the $599 becomes $899, and if a Honda dealer add in another $100 and you're looking at $1000 + tax.
