04 tl avg mpg 20..???
ok i just got this car have not done any engine mods on a few "look" mods.
i drive mainly highway 15 miles or so and about 3 in town a day. im only getting 20-21 mpg what gives? air filter did not look dirty when checked. noticed that my intake tube is ripped right where my throttle body is by the hose clamp but still a solid connection. only 92+ octane, what can i do!?

The EPA ratings for the '04 TL A/T is 18/26, manual 18/28, so depending on the type of driving conditions you experience, the mileage will vary. You'll read about the outrageous highway numbers posted here, but in the normal everyday conditions they won't be seen. If you are using the computer, check the mileage mathematically at time of fill ups to be certain of the number, but driving habits play an important part of the car being frugal with gas.
Just remember, it’s a 3600 lb V-6 so you’re not going to see great numbers.

first replace the intake hose
Looks solid and SEALS are different!! air leaks mess up the computer
Then understand it takes about 10 miles of freeway for the car to get warmed up fully, to dry out the water vapor in the exhaust and recharge the battery after starting.
Acura says to go on a 30 minute freeway cruise once a month if you drive short distances each day
Really important to dry out the cars oil fluids!!! wiki hygroscopic for info
Use the ac 10 minutes to keep the seals lubed, also run to heater 10 minutes at least once a month to prevent problems next winter

So your saying 1 whole can in the intake and gas tank?? so your using 2 cans total and no seafoam in the oil did i do it wrong??

He needs to replace that leaking air tube that goes from the airbox top to the TB inlet
then ok to seafoam
Notice how its all sealed with rubber and screws and hose clamps holding it tight at the airbox...has to be airtight all the way!!
seafoam use as much of 1 can as it will take in the vac port- see the DIY
Try it with Deep Creep- seafoam aerosol can found at autozone
in the gas, 2 oz per gal is cleaning dose- 1 can to 1/2 tank
The engine oil you do when you are ready to change the oil, then 1/2 can in the oil cap and idle it in driveway or drive to get changed.
I put a new filter on, added seafoam and drove 150 miles, changed oil and filter
Wow was there lots of crud in a new filter!

after that- if you have 70K miles or more its ready for new NGK Iridium spark plugs'
Those are stock plug and work the best
50 bucks for 6 and a dollar tube of anti sieze for the threads
Makes car run like new

ronjon change you oil and filter NOW
It wont have hurt anything, you can run it for a month as long as you watch the dipstick color and sludge attachment..it will be clean in the oil passages which is what you want
I wonder if the gen3 prob with sticking vtec sliders is due to oil coagulation and needs to be foamed every 2 changes to keep it working-- I do and Im a gen2~

idk about this seafoam stuff these guys are talking about so i cant comment on that, but before u do anything id get that tear taken care of

please follow the seafoam diy here in the garage section- ignore utube
Use a full can in 1/2 tank of gas and 1 can in the intake vac nipple
Buy it as `Deep Creep` seafoam in aerosol can form-easy to do the vac port, and clean the TB plate inside the TB

A TL on 20s and sticky tires wont get great mileage--there is a tradeoff in all things
More flash..less mileage
More Power,,less mileage, except it can be used to get better miles,,, if driven gently
example k&n gives more airflow, = less throttle needed, = less fuel with better combustion for better torque- thats the power that makes the car go- torque

I have an '04 manual and an '05 automatic (the wife's). The first summer I had my '04, I did a week long mileage test and yes, the old fashioned (read that as reliable) way. The week was work commuting and my commute is through a small city and residential area, to and from work in generally, moderately heavy traffic. During this week, my average was 27.98 MPG. That is the best I have managed and I was trying to get the best mileage - not being nuts with slow driving.. just not being hyper on the throttle.
That September, I went on vacation and for the first leg of the trip (260 miles), I averaged 33.94 with the A/C running the entire way and no special mileage techniques used.
With my present tires, I manage just under 24.5 MPG during my work commute (same route described above), driving normally which for me is not aggressive but also not granddad. Road trips manage slightly over 32 MPG.

The worst I ever averaged was 14MPG city and 23 HWY that was with my 19'' Axis Hiro with some cheapy Nankang NSII and perhaps a bad alignment.
I threw my stocks + seafoam and back to 24 city and 29 hwy same bad alignment.
My current set up is 19" Ronjon Legends with Nitto Invo and im 21/22 city and 27/28 HWY and yeah stupid bad alignment she pulls to the right slightly

My commute is 40 miles one way, of mostly freeway driving... However, becuase of those two hills, I only average 19mpg when I drive, or 20 when my wife drives.
On my other cars which have instant readouts of fuel economy, I saw that even when I'm only doing 1900rpm going up the hill, my fuel economy drops to like 8mpg.
I've taken the TL on roadtrips before and averages close to 30mpg, so I"m pretty sure those hills in my normal commute are responsible for killing my fuel economy.
