'04 TL (Auto) vs '08 GTI (DSG)

*For "Cliffs" just read Race #1/2/3.

Finally got to run that GTI I was talking about in a previous thread. I'm feeling kind of lazy so I'll just get to the facts.

'04 TL:
* Driver Only: ~195lbs
- 5-Speed Auto
- 99% Stock.
- Mild Weight Reduction

'08 GTI:
* Driver Only: ~175lbs
- DSG Transmission
- 100% Stock minus rims/tires

Race #1: From a dig. VSA Off.
We both spun off the line for a few seconds. I managed to pull away by 1 car length and held it. We shut down at ~70mph.

Race #2: ~50 roll, 2nd gear.
I started pulling as soon as we went. Shut it down at ~120. I won by 1, maybe 2 car lengths. Couldn't tell.. I heard the turbo though, it was kind of scary.

Race #3: ~80 roll, 3rd gear.
Quick burst to 100. I managed to pull 1+ car lengths again before we shut down to make our exit.

Post-race: We were both relatively surprised. A few people on here were telling me that he should pull and I went into this wondering how bad I'm gonna' get beat .

A few days earlier, he was telling me how he just barely beat a 350z from a ~40 roll. Makes me want to go find a Z and try my luck now.

Thanks for reading guys.

Maybe he beat a n/a 300zx or a 240z or maybe a 280z, not a 350z tho.

Agreed, it's definitely "sketchy" to say the least.

He specifically said a 350z.

Thanks man! It's funny cause I went in expecting to lose.

And agreed, I don't know about him beating the Z but I guess anything is possible in a street race.

With that said, I still wanna' try my luck with a Z again. Or at least a G Coupe.

^^ Per your sig it looks like you've already tried your luck with a 350z

Nice kill! I wouldn't have expected that outcome either. What weight reduction do you have?

I had a passenger, text books, sub, amp, and all the regular stuff in the car. And we ran it from a dig so bald tires didn't help. But no excuses, I wanna' try my luck again. This time my tires have tread and my car will weigh less.

Thanks!
- Amp
- Sub
- Spare Tire
- Tools
- Trunk Mat
- Floor Mats
- Miscellaneous crap that shouldn't be in the car anyways.

Please pace yourself with the street encounters and don't be like my son who insists on: a) being an aggressive menace on the roads, b) singlehandedly subsidIzing OPEC with his lead foot and c) thinking anyone who's not grannyshifting is racing.

He's still a new driver and needs to pace himself. That said, if he was a 'problem poster', I would have prefaced my post with ---> MODERATOR'S NOTE.

Stock GTI (7 0-60, 15 1/4) is not touching a 350z of any year. That is, unless the 350 driver is severely impaired.

A well driven stock GTI should be good for sub 6/15 acceleration times but an adequately driven Z should take it down.

Thanks for the advice F23. . I don't count anything as a race unless we line up and honk it off. I'm not a believer in the ricer fly-by. . I just seem to be getting lucky lately, but I do understand where you're coming from.

That's what I thought. If anything, I think a TL would fair better against a Z than his stock GTI would. Keep in mind that I said "Would fair better", not win.

Agreed. This guy is an ok driver, but neither he nor his car seem capable of taking out a Z...not yet at least.

My concern is the frequency of your runs. It seems as though you're doing a number of runs on the streets and you likely don't have more than maybe two years of driving experience which would further expose you to a number of the hazards one can encounter while in 'normal driving mode' let alone street runs.

I understand that you're young and probably feel impervious to any form of misfortune. But quit frankly 'shit' happens...and way to often to drivers in your age group, which includes that of my son. So even if it's in the middle of the night and you're Will Smith living in NYC after the KV virus reared its ugly head, pace yourself.

When I had my 2nd Gen TL 6 speed I was able to beat 350z's, G35's, and destroyed a 3.5 Altima.... actually the only thing that I raced and couldnt beat was a MB C32 AMG, we were close but I had a very bad start with terrible wheel hop.

What I did in the 05 I drove would not be considered spinning tires. I broke traction and made some tire squeel. In my 2g I would roast tires. Theres a difference.

LOL 350Z the older ones arent that fast I dont know why you guys are riding them so hard. I use to work for nissan (they have tons of torque) but from a 60mph drop on the freeway (weight goes out the window) and it wasnt that impressive

I got a 07 tl base

I got the 07 tl which you know is an automatic. This car isn't set up to be a tire roaster it's set up to pass all day on the highway.

VW Stats from motor trend.

Under the hood sits the venerable 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder that has been a VW staple for years. That's not a complaint, mind you, this is a great engine. The 2008 model comes with FSI direct injection and drive-by-wire throttle for maximum efficiency, and it shows. The 16-valve turbo churns out 200 hp at 5100 rpm and 207 lb-ft of torque from 1800 rpm up to 5000, with a 6500-rpm redline. All that boosted power is good for 0-to-60 sprints in 6.1 sec and a quarter mile of 14.7 sec at 94.2 mph in our test car. What's really impressive is that it bested the Volvo by 0.2 sec to 60 and by 0.1 sec and 0.8 mph in the quarter mile when the Volvo had more power and a better weight-to-power ratio.

Acura Stats from motor trend

Test Data
Acceleration to mph
0-30 2.6 sec
0-40 3.7
0-50 5.2
0-60 6.9
0-70 8.9
0-80 11.6
0-90 14.6
0-100 18.0
Quarter mile 15.1 sec @ 93.4 mph

on paper the gti should get the tl according to motor trend.

06 TL (at)
vs
08 R32

40ish to 130 mph

VW was never able to get in front and had one car lenght gap at the end

Not impossible- done this on 90 degree day in July with no moisture and new tires. I was on E though.
