'04 keyfob compatibility

'04 keyfob compatibility
The simple question I have is: Is an 03 keyfob compatible with an 04 TL?
Here's the longer version: My original fob casing broke - the fob still works, but the case broke at the keychain-hole, so I can't put it on a chain. So I went to EBAY and bought two cheap used ones for about 12 bucks each. I went through the Dungeons & Dragons routine to program them, but only one of them was accepted. Which is fine. I now have a working "chainable" fob and abackup (my old one with broken case), but I'm wondering why the 3rd fob didn't work. It's an 03 fob, so I'm wondering if that's the issue (in which case, I'll dump it back on EBAY). But I Google's this issue prior to buying the fobs and consensus seemed to be that 02s 03s and 04s are compatible. Anyone out there have a definitive answer?
