*Power Steering Hose Recall*
Well for any of you who look around on the RL forum, you may have noticed a thread that's been around for a while for a power steering hose recall:
https://acurazine.com/forums/showthread.php?t=4923
Well it's happening to us now. Just got the email today from Acura at work. Here's the deal:
Problem: Just like the RL's, "the power steering hose can deteriorate due to high underhood temperatures, and begin to leak power steering fluid. The leaking fluid can contact the exhaust system, causing smoke in the engine compartment".
What cars are affected: All 04, 05, 06, 07, and 08's up to A003683.
Though announced today, the actual recall won't be issued until "the first week in May, pending parts availability for the various model years".
Lastly, there are three different kits for the fix. Unlike the RL, which was the same part #/kit for any year, there are apperently three kits for the TL's. Kits for the 04's, 05-06's, and 07-08's. Unsold cars will get fixed first, folded by oldest cars will, which of course means 04's are first in line.
Just wanted to give everyone a heads up. I've done almost all the RL P/S hose recalls at my dealership, the TL's layout seems similar though may be more difficult due to the fact it looks like the hardline goes under the rear engine mount vs. behind the mount like in the RL.
I'll try to keep everyone posted when new info comes out.

Forgot to add that this is not a bulletin or recall yet, you won't find anything from Acura, or on ISIS, for those of you who work for Acura. Just the email went out for now.

You'll have to wait for the official recall, but in many cases they'll allow you reimbursement if your car and repair met the recall criteria and you have proof of replacement and costs.
You might look at the RL thread and see if the actual recall letter is posted. That's where the bit about reimbursement will be. If they did it for the RL, they'll probably do it for the TL.

Man of God.....
Thanks!
Thanks for the info!
I wonder if they "drain & refill"? I wanted to replace the fluid sooner or later anyway. I probably need to talk to the mechanic when I bring it in.... Anyone else change the P/S fluid, for routine maintenance? If so how many miles? Or years?

I read the PDF on the RL page, and the instructions say to drain the P/S fluid. So I guess they will do the same thing.
It says that is fluid is discolored or dark, then they "should not" reuse it, otherwise it will be reused. PUT SOME FOOD COLORING IN IT

It was funny, I stopped by to pick up some parts, and decided to talk to my service advisor. He had NO idea about the recall, I was like talk to the bossman, email just went out. He was so surprised!!!

Good Lookin Out
Funny thing about this, i went to Autozone to pick up some air fresheners (2 for 1) and as i rolled up, this dude, who looked like a basehead, was outside under the hood of a Pontiac 6000. I mean, this dude looked like a straight up rockstar, no front teeth, hair all jacked up, dirty face and hands. As i hold open the door for him, he's like "Nice Ack". I say thanks and keep it movin, but this dude wants to be all chatty. He then proceeds to tell me EXACTLY what is mentioned by the OP regarding the p/s recall...
"the power steering hose can deteriorate due to high underhood temperatures, and begin to leak power steering fluid. The leaking fluid can contact the exhaust system, causing smoke in the engine compartment."
I'm lookin' at this cat like, "C'Mon B, you workin on a Pontiac...th'fuck do you know about a TL?" He's all adamant n'shit, tellin me to keep an eye on my p/s levels and try to be aware of any engine compartment smoke or increased difficulty in turning the wheel. I still can't believe that this squeegee man is trying to convince me that my Acura TL could be anything but perfect. I thank him kindly for the heads up...
Fast Forward 1.5 months and whaddayaknow...This dude knew what he was talking about.
i should have known better than judge this cat based on his appearance. Many of the mechanics i've seen accomplish amazing things (i.e. My boy Tuki who built a 438hp Integra) were not exactly the prettiest people. Chalk one up for me letting the "Ack" get to my head. Won't happen again. I swear, the next dude who rolls up on me with some translucent spray bottle with an unknown blue liquid and a rag is going to be solely responsible for all of my vehicle maintenance from then on....

Well that's a bit more of a response then I had guessed I would get! Glad I could help everyone out. Like I had originally said, I don't think we'll be seeing any updates anytime soon. But if I do hear anything new, I will be sure to let you all know.
Nasir - I know some poeple have answered you already, and they are correct to say that Acura will still (most likely) reimburse you providing you still have the receipts, etc. You'll still want to have the recall done because the countermeasures on the new hoses will not be on your replacement hose.
In case anyone is wondering, the differences (on the RL hoses) are the upper part by the valve cover has an additional rubber surrounding (shield), and then the lower part (that runs down behind the block) has a thin metal "heat shield", if you will. I would assume the TL's fix will be quite similar. There are no noticeable changes to the hardline, as there wouldn't need to be.
JAH Bless - You're random Autozone guy must have has some serious insider info because I was just down at school the beginning of this month, and nothing was mentioned about it, even when I asked the instructors down there about anything new/problems with the TLs. And they're pretty good about keeping me in the loop, even to the point of emailing me important stuff...or in my quest for getting the rear lower (3rd) brake light/reverse light combo on the Chinese TL's (see below)
But anyways, back to the subject, I don't doubt his knowledge, just not sure if maybe he was confusing it with the already-been-around-awhile RL repair. Either way, you're right, looks can be deceiving!
I'm actually glad I have my 07 TL-S because I'de personally like to get some practice in before I have to do the repair. As I stated before, the TL hoses look like they are similarly routed compared to the RLs, minus the rear engine mount. Guess we'll see how it goes come May with the unsold/04 units.

There is a 2nd part to this or 2nd recall.
"In the second action, Honda said it was recalling 129,600 TLs from the 2004-05 model year to address a potential failure of the circuit breaker inside the windshield wiper motor. If the circuit breaker fails, it could prevent the wiper from working and increase the likelihood of a crash." SanDiego

Yah I didn't feel like starting a new thread on the windshield wiper motor recall because there wasn't a lot of info on it, plus that actual recall is coming out much sooner then the p/s hose recall. Therefore I was going to wait until the official recall came out. Plus it wasn't related to this recall so I chose not to mention it.
The p/s hose recall and wiper motor recall "cliff notes" emails both came on the same day. I don't have the wiper email in hand but it was just basically we are going to inspect a part of it and either replace the motor then or add a drain tube and some foam piece around the cowl...I think. I really didn't pay attention to that one, again, because I was waiting for the official recall to come out.
Alex22 - We've had problems with the 04+ TL power steering pumps. I personally believe the failure is unrelated, at least for the most part, to this upcoming hose recall. For whatever reason, they just like to go out. First it's the noise, then the harder steering when not moving or going very slow. Or it can just happen all at once. For a while I was replacing at least one pump a week. But again I don't think it's due to the hose, because unless the hose was actually leaking, causing the fluid to be low, therefore causing the pump to run dry/have air bubbles in it...well you get my point. But just like the RLs, I have yet to see any RLs, or TLs, for that matter, in our shop for a p/s hose leak prior to the recall announcement for both vehicles.
So my advice is, if you're still in warranty, get the pump replaced. If not, I guess attempt to blame the pump failure on the hose, or bring up that you've read on here that TL p/s pumps seem to fail more often.
korrupted - Thanks for the link to the PDF

What's the usual time frame between the recall being issued and owner link reflecting the presence of said recall (if the vehicle is in the specified VIN range)? I checked the website and my vehicle had no recalls. I then called the owner link "hotline" and the Customer Service Rep wasn't even aware of the recall. She swore i was lying until i read her the info from that NHTSA PDF.

never judge a book by it's cover. I know a few country-bumkin old men that can barely read that own more real estate than you can imagine. I know and old guy that owned twenty properties that his family didn't even know about until he died and the tax bills started coming. Drove and old pick-up and lived in the same house for 50 yrs.
