RLX Ceramic Detail

My 2020 RLX now has 28k miles. I take great care of my cars, but living in a hi rise with common underground parking and no ability to hand wash at home. As a result, I have an unlimited car wash pass for a commercial car wash and I always go over the RLX with a Quick Detailer or Ceramic Spray boost after the commercial wash. This past holiday weekend I was on the eastern shore and had the ability to hand wash and detail out the RLX. I used Griots Garage Surface Prep (foam cannon) to remove original Adams Spray Ceramic I used when car was new. I used Dr Beasley's NSP #45 Nano Surface Primer and then #95 (very fine) Nano Surface Primer both with my Griots Garage random orbital and the proper respective Foam pads. I sealed the paint with Dr Beasley's Formula 1201 Ceramic Nanocoating. The 1201 is very easy to apply, it is not a super hard permanent coating. The most work is in the prep with the #45 and #95 surface primers which take some time. The paint was in excellent shape, but with some minor accumulation of car wash hazing. I will be curious to see how long the coating lasts. I did notice a difference in the gloss of the shine and depth of the shine after the 2 surface primers.
One of my nit picks with the RLX is the orange peel (I was extremely spoiled with the awesome best in class hand finished 2012 RL paint). But from 10 feet away the orange peel is a non issue and I do get compliments on my RLX's finish appearance. Back in the day when most young kids worked, I started my own car detailing business in the 7th grade right out in the street in front of our metro NYC family home. Did that all through college. Got hired by Michelin Tire HQ (back then in NY) out of college and learned a hard lesson, suddenly Uncle Sam wanted his fair share! I still love to detail cars.

Yup, the dark colors show everything. I keep a California Car Duster in the trunk!

Been thinking about ceramic, but cost is crazy if I don't do it and a professional clay bar/paint looks pretty good too.

You've got it looking sharp. That hard work pays dividends. Hopefully it will last you a while!

I did a combo of Suntek Ultra PPF and CQuatz finest on my fathom blue pearl MDX hybrid (front bumper/hood/fenders/side mirrors PPF, doors/roof/hatch ceramic). Decided to wrap my entire CPO RLX with XPEL ultimate self healing PPF (also has hydrophobic properties like ceramic coating). It took a lot of color correction on the RLX because the previous owner did either dealership or local touch car washes (soooo many spiderweb looking scratches). Keeping ceramic coating pristine is A LOT of work compared to PPF. Comes in handy to have a whole house water softener, tankless water heater in my garage for lukewarm water in winter, and oversize garage.

Love that color and the shine! Mine is PPF as well. I hand wash mine every couple weeks with foam cannon with two buckets method. Drying aid with Turtle Wax Seal and Shine. Been having great luck with this product. It's cheap, provide amazing lasting shine, and easy to put on and buff off. Ceramic coating is a good option for those who don't like to wash their own cars often. But it doesn't do a darn thing to protect against scratches and rock chips. My PPF guy wanted $1500 to do Ceramic coating on my RLX. No thanks. Rather spend that money on XPEL PPF.
