Faulty front camera - RLX Sport Hybrid

My front camera started flickering on/off periodically last year but inconsistently. I have a 2015 RLX Sport Hybrid. I didn't bring it in because it wasn't something consistent and figured it would perform flawlessly no doubt while at the dealership - I just didn't have the time (my mistake retrospectively). Also, the front camera isn't something I use on a daily basis anyway.

My factory warranty expired in February and although I have the CPO 7 year, 130K warranty, the front camera assembly is not covered - sure enough, the camera failed this spring and no longer works. When I press the camera button on the dash, it's just a black screen. The side mirror cameras work and so does the rearview camera. I didn't bring it to the dealer sooner due to COVID-19 and then finally brought the vehicle in for a regular oil change service in September and asked them to take a look. The invoice states "diagnosed front camera not working. Found code B14A6 front camera image input failure. Found faulty front view camera, needs to be replaced".

Any guess what part number 36870-TY3-A03 (Camera Assembly, LKAS) costs? I nearly fainted when I was told it would cost $4,910 CDN plus 13% tax, or $5,548.30 to be exact to replace. I could set up a full 4K home security system with the best cameras on the market for a fraction of that cost...

My dealer contacted Acura on my behalf as although I am over the 5 year warranty, I am well under on mileage at only 72,000km. Acura came back and offered to pitch in $3,000 and the dealership offered to contribute $900 - leaving me out of pocket $1,010 or roughly $1,150 out the door after tax.

I do appreciate the support offered by Acura and my dealership, but the price of this part is simply ridiculous and further amplifies my concern of driving this rare import car. I had these concerns a few years ago when a rock hit my windshield and needed to be replaced, only to find out it cost around $3,500 to be replaced.

I love the RLX Sport Hybrid but I'm seriously starting to question continued ownership outside of warranty because the parts on this car are just way too expensive to maintain. For all those people considering the RLX SH over the TLX, this has to be something worthy of consideration. When things start to fail on this car outside of warranty, beware!!

On a separate note, I do find it interesting that my Lane Keep Assist (LKAS) still performs flawlessly - and based on the name of the part, I assume this faulty camera operates that system too. Not sure how the camera is broken but LKAS still works???

On my 18 RLX hybrid, front camera for low speed/parking is located below the Acura emblem on the front grill. The LKAS camera is in the top/center in the windshield above the rear view mirror. Not sure if there is a difference for camera placement the earlier models before 2018.

The front facing camera also worries me since it is taking the all the impacts and weather hits. Is it just the camera or the whole system needs to replaced? It is a $7000 difference between a RLX fwd tech and RLX hybrid Adv, I don't think the front camera accounts for $5000 of that price.

So here's what's interesting. The cost for the camera for the front view (grille mounted) for either an '18 or '16 is under $500 (or under $400 for an online vendor). The cost for the LKAS camera in the windshield for either an '18 or '16 is $4000 (or under $3000 mailorder). So if the front view camera (bumper mounted) is what's failed, make sure they're quoting the right price. I'm astounded the LKAS camera is so much, but happier the front view camera isn't what you got quoted....

Thanks Andy. This is what I'm wondering, if they quoted me the wrong camera to replace. My LKAS system is working flawlessly. The camera which isn't working is the front view parking assist camera (when I press the camera button on the dash). Do you have the part number for the front view grille mounted camera? They only referenced my need for part number 36870-TY3-A03 which is the LKAS camera if I'm not mistaken.
