2014 AcuraLink will be terminated

Those that have a 2014 RLX, did you get the following email that Acuralink will be terminated. I was using real time traffic, so this means no traffic.

Thank you for being a valued AcuraLink customer.

We want to make you aware of upcoming third party wireless technology changes that will impact your AcuraLink subscription services.

North American telecommunications providers are making changes to their legacy cellular networks. As a result, we have been notified by our wireless provider that they will be terminating their CDMA (3G) cellular network. The decision to phase out this technology was made at the discretion of the respective cellular carriers and is beyond the control of Acura.

How This Will Impact Your AcuraLink Subscription Services

Your 2014 Acura RLX relies on the CDMA (3G) cellular network to deliver AcuraLink subscription services to you.

As of August 24, 2021, AcuraLink will no longer renew annual subscriptions. Your subscription service will remain active until your current annual paid plan has expired, either on or before August 23, 2022, at which time your services will be terminated.

These services may include:
  • AcuraLink Premium: Personal concierge services to make hotel, restaurant or airline reservations.
  • AcuraLink Connect: Automatic Collision Notification, Emergency Call, Stolen Vehicle Locator, Enhanced Roadside Assistance, Remote Door Lock/Unlock, Send Destination, Find My Car, Destination by Voice, Vehicle Status, and Security Alarm Alert.
  • AcuraLink Standard: Real Time Traffic and Maintenance Reminders.
How To Continue Using AcuraLink Subscription Services

You may continue to access your AcuraLink subscription services if the hardware in your vehicle is updated with a new device. Please contact your dealer for more information.

Coupon Code For A New Acura

Below is a coupon code valued at $1,500 which can be applied to the purchase or lease of your next Acura. This coupon code is valid for one year. Provide this code to your dealer for $1,500 towards the lease or purchase of a new Acura.

That's actually a really well-written corporate communication, and the $1,500 off a new Acura is both generous and brilliant.

It should be a notification to upgrade the module for free and one year of free Acuralink for those effected loyal and valued customers.

This is not something new in car industry unfortunately. Many in the ClubLexus forums are getting this same notice.

It would be cool if 3rd party like GROM could add some of these features via software update to their Vline2 module. Personal concierge is probably not going to work, but some of the other features could probably be interface with OBDII module to relay vehicle data to GROM. Not sure if they're willing to put in the time and effort. I'd subscribe to such feature if available with GROM.

2017 NSX owners will likely be pissed. I’m at NSXPO now and will see if NC1 owners are aware.

If you buy a GROM unit, your traffic situation will improve as you’ll be able to use Waze and/or Google Maps. I have it in my 2020. Still reviewing, and awaiting GROM to do some fixes.

These changes are not unprecedented, and not Acura’s fault. I’ve owned two GM products that had OnStar discontinue coverage because of halting older cell phone coverage. They also would not update the hardware to allow OnStar to continue.

I really do hope GROM will come out with an OBDII interface to give us some vehicle data like (door open, alarm triggered, fuel/tire pressure levels). They talked about release this years ago, but I haven't yet seen anything.

Dr. Bob, what fixes are you experiencing? The latest .30 firmware for Honda/Acura is bugged. It causes constant reboot and WAA disconnection. GROM suggest to flash back to previous .27 firmware. You can find the instructions to flash and firmware files here: https://gromaudio.com/software-vl1.html#troubleshooting

I'm having random system shutdowns. I'll post up in a separate review thread eventually. I've been out of town for almost two weeks (NSXPO road trip ) and just haven't had a chance to install the old firmware. Mine came with the latest.

.30 firmware causes lots of random reboots. They just released .31 last week. Cured the reboots problem for me. Working flawlessly now.

Coming back to the main topic of this post. My CTS-V wagon apparently has OnStar via the 2G cell network, according to the latest flyer I received from them. All those towers are being shut down in 2022 and so my pre-2015 car loses OnStar...but they are offering, for free, a plug-in OnStar Link device. it plugs into the OBD2 port and activates the same services I was already paying for. It's not released yet, but apparently since I signed up, I am told I'll be one of the first to know when it is released.

OTOH, it seems that Acura's approach is different. If OnStar can do this, Acura can, too. I'm sure they are mulling over options...
