Engine Air Filter Installation
HELP! I bought K&N 33-3096 as a direct engine air filter replacement. I consider myself handy but for the life of me I can’t figure out how to get to the existing filter. I see the housing on the front right of the engine compartment. 3 of the 4 phillips head screws are accessible. But it looks as if you got to take apart an air shroud (or something) to get to the one on in the front on the right side. I’m hoping that’s not the case because I can’t see how to do so.
Can anyone share dissemble instructions & offer photos if you have them.

Appreciate the drawing however my issue is getting to screw # 15 on the front right side. And the drawing does not show the shroud coving the housing or how to remove it to get easier access to the air filter housing & that screw. Even if I got the problem screw out with a right-angle screwdriver, I think that if the shroud is not removed it might limit the height of the top housing & not provide the clearance needed to replace the filter. So, I’m back to how to take off the rubber air shroud? Do you have experience with it & can you provide guidance? Thanks

justnspace, You may have misunderstood me. I DO appreciate your responses, really. Yes, the photo you shared is the shroud I’m concerned about. From your experience would you know how to take if off? Or are you inferring I should not need to & just concentrate on getting all 4 filter housing screws off & there will be enough clearance under it to remove & replace the filter?

here another member has already done it.
as i expected, the plastic covers and the rubber air dam needs to come off.
I just replaced my engine air filter with the K&N one a couple weeks ago. No clips on the intake box like vehicles of yesteryear. I had to remove the plastic covering, in addition to the intake duct in order to access the three screws on the intake box. Other than that, it was a straight forward install.

BTW, I hope the transmission can handle the great heaping gobs of horsepower and torque this K&N filter will unleash.

Thought to share this from another forum about how to obtain access to the engine air filter housing screws. Try doing the following while engine is hot/warm since its key that rubber shroud is warm since it will be more flexible to work with.
1. Pull the rubber shroud from the bottom, not the top. In the center of the shroud is a pull tab, use a screwdriver and pull up this releases it.
2. Once done bend this shroud out of the way to undo the 4 screws.
3. You will be able to open it enough to pull out and put in your filter without having to remove the plastic cover at the front of the engine compartment
This worked like a charm the other day

Remember back-in-the-day when there was just one wing-nut on the very top to get the air filter out? And even better, flipping the air filter cover over to get that four barrel growl? It all used to be---so easy. Instructions and diagrams to change an air filter...no.

A girl I knew in high school once asked me to look at her car, because "the overhead cam is loose".
I thought that was a bit odd, but I looked anyway. The air filter cover had a big sticker on it advertising GM's most advanced engine design: "Overhead Cam".
And yeah, the wing-nut was loose.

Whats up security dude. Even that is overrated IMO. They are not just "flow a little water and let dry" like the literature claims. Half an hour picking bugs out of the pleats with tweezers.....no thanks.

Agree with that. K&N is overrated and a PITA to clean. Had a K&N on a Dodge diesel and never felt is was catching as much fine particles as the paper filter. Not worth an overhaul.
