Ultimate 5.1 Audio in the New RDX
#201
Burning Brakes
Someone PM'd me to say that my original post with the test files had a link that no longer worked, so I just recompiled a new test file zip. This time I added segments of 5.1 tunes that most of you will recognize. Because of copyright restrictions, I am only including a minute of each of the song samples, which is allowed as they are demonstration/sample material, not entire songs.
The first track is channel identification shout outs, so you can be sure that your Acura 5.1 decoding is working. I hope this file helps some of you to experience REAL 5.1 audio from your car.
This is a zip file, so just unzip it, copy the 11 files as they are to a USB stick and play it in the car. These are all tagged with graphics and titles and are 24/48 zero compression, ready to go for the car.
Let us know what you think in this thread!

They sound good on my home-theater-system and the Audi's Bang & Olufsen.
I'm just learning how to create 5.1 FLAC myself. May I ask how/where you originally found all these tracks in DD5.1/AC3/DTS form?

I wonder where the original 5.1 channel Doobie Brothers tracks came from?

1. I'm sure I can live with these specs. I'll try changing my work-flow for this result (instead of something more extreme). I would rather do than than try to manage multiple ripped-FLAC copies.
2. Yeah, even on my nice home theater, hard to even say 96kHz is much better than 48kHz when you have 5.1 coming at you from all directions (6 discrete channels). I've found that what makes more of a difference is the better pro studio mix (as often available on these SACD and DVD-A re-masters).

For the SACD that were identified in online db (getting meta-tags filled in) it was easy to just go back and re-rip them.
However, the DVD-A, BD-A, etc. are a different story. Those have to be manually edited. But they are already 96kHz/24bit 6ch FLAC files (and perfectly tagged), and it's just a slight down-sample, so instead of starting-over ... I used a the SSRC DSP re-sample at 48k and ended up with perfectly fine sounding 48kHz/24bit 6-channel FLAC files (with all file names and meta-tags left intact). The audio and channels "look right" in Audacity and MediaInfo . Most importantly, they still sound great.
So, you are sure that 96kHz/24bit 2-ch (stereo) FLAC files play fine on Acura ELS (current and going back to at least 2014 RDX/MDX)? I have some of those also, and it would be nice to not have to mess with them.
And finally ... on ELS ... don't even stereo files get a slight "fake DSP" or "matrixed" surround treatment (when you want it)?
.

I read that the system uses one of 13 'profiles' to manipulate the recording depending on how good the source is. I have the link posted elswhere on here.

However, all 4 Doobie Brothers Quadraphonic albums were recently released by WB/Rhino on Bluray 4.0 audio discs that can be ripped to 24/48 Zero Compression flac to play beautifully in the ELS 3D systems in the RDX's (19-21) and probably in the TLX and MDX with the 3D USB systems.

1. Not really. The SACD is from Japan and is a repress of the original 2001 DVD-Audio disc with a new 5.1 mix by Elliot Scheiner.

2. Interesting. Quadraphonic huh? I wonder why. So with quad the Center and LFE are empty channels ?

1. Right, a Japanese SACD. Not sure why it says 2011 instead of 2001. Maybe a re-printing. 2001 would make more sense as I think the Acura set was released in 2007 or there-abouts.

2) The WB Doobies Quadio box (and the earlier Chicago Quadio Box) was created from the original quadraphonic masters released in the mid '70's. When listening to quad mixes in the Acura's ELS 3D system, you must edit the wav files and create an empty center and LFE channel or the surround will not work. The system will merge the tracks into a stereo mix.
There are hundreds of quad titles that were released in the 70's, many of them having been reissued on SACD and/or DVD/DVD-Audio. Seek and you might find.

Hi Guys, Just got 2022 MDX ASPEC and can't get any 5.1 files to play. The vehicle just says can't play this format. I've converted a bunch of my own files and used the ones uploaded here. Nothing seems to work. Any ideas? I'm using a Sandisk 1TB fall drive exfat.

2) It is well known that when using Wireless CarPlay/AA on the MDX, you can't use the USB to play music files simultaneously. In this regard, the limitation is the same for RDX and TLX.

Believe it or not, though technically the OS supports it the system prefers FAT32. FLAC files also need to have 0 compression and be 48Khz for 5.1, max 96Khz for stereo.
#219
Thanks, Tired the fat32 originally and it didn't work. You're right with the wireless CarPlay it won't let you use the USB slot at all. This is so frustrating. Can't tell you how many times I've gone back and forth to the mdx in the past 6 years trying cd's and usb sticks just for them to fail. Wish they would make much more straight forward rather that jumping through hoops. Honestly the car ca see the files, just won't play them. I know they are correct as I downloaded some of them from here and everyone says they work. Has anyone tried resetting the entertainment head to factory settings?

Apple adding Spatial Audio with Dolby Atmos to Apple Music
Some positive news about 5.1 audio becoming more mainstream. Hopefully Apple enables this in CarPlay in the future. It would be awesome to listen to 5.1 audio via CarPlay, especially if Apple moves alot of their library to 5.1. Even if it's not 5.1, I'd look forward to hearing lossless 2 channel sound on my RDX.

Here's something that I will post for a VERY SHORT TIME. It's the track 'Seven Bridges Road' from the Eagles "Hell Freezes Over" album. It's in extreme 5.1, mixed by Elliot Scheiner. Some of you may already have this, but I am betting there are a lot of you that have never heard the 5.1 in the RDX, so download this file, put it on a USB stick, and enjoy.
This mix is very discrete, as the 5 Eagles vocalists are spread out around to each channel of audio, as follows;
Front Left - Don Henley
Center - Joe Walsh
Front Right - Glenn Fry
Rear Left - Don Felder
Rear Right - Timothy B. Schmidt
When you get this in your car, sit in your driveway, play the track, then play with your fader/balance in the car. You can use it to hear each one of their voices exclusively if you do it right. It's very cool.
Anyway, this is a limited deal as I am not a pirate or a bootlegger, I just want you all to hear what the car can do. Once you get the file, please share it with other RDX folks. I wish there were a way where we could buy stuff like this, I would scream from the rooftops telling everyone where to go to purchase 5.1 audio for the Acura, but sadly that is not possible. What a waste.
Anyway, here's the link to the file, and PLEASE, let us know how it works out for you and what you think. Once the link is dead, it's gone.

Thank you so much....again. And agree with the comments, of course, about wishing you could buy this stuff. Very excited about the Fleetwood Mac 'The Dance' album that someone made available recently, only to find out it was not in a format that the RDX could play. Still don't understand, but am sure it's economics and demand related, that you cannot buy via an Apple I-Tunes type website, 5.1 individual songs.

Here'e the complete Norah Jones super discrete 5.1 mix that someone was asking about. It's the entire song. This is NOT the same mix as the SACD.
This mix is not commercially available anywhere

I have Eagles - Hell Freezes Over on VIDEO-DVD. It's live-video with a proper DTS (6 discrete tracks). Yes, now I see this bonus track. Says it's DTS-5.1 but (strangely) audio-only. It's would be strange if it was mixed this way, but I'll take your word for it for now.
I have an established work-flow to get tracks like this extracted and saved a high-bit-rate 6-channel FLAC files. Just haven't got around to doing this one though. To me ... one (of the many) cool things about Hell Freezes Over is that Don Felder is still part of the band.

Classic rock, jazz stuff like that. I’ll check the site. Probs what most on here listen to. Plus there’s not that many rap albums in 5.1. Although OutKast has one which would be sick

I was able to get some 5.1 jazz and some others for the time being and it is a far better listening experience than stereo through this system. I’m assuming it’s cause the dsp/amp pushes more power to the discrete channels than through stereo. It’s just much clearer and removes the middy bleed you can get with regular tunes playing. The system sounds good regardless but the clarity difference is very noticeable to me. Others maybe not, but I enjoy good sound and it is impressive the difference. Surprised dealers have no idea that this was a thing. I was told the 3D was because of the roof mounted speakers etc. kinda wish I still had all my sacds/dvd a discs from early 2k. Thanks to others on here helping with this. And if anyone knows where I can get the dire straights brothers in arms 5.1 album let me know. Have original press on vinyl but want to hear it in all its goodness. Either way enjoy the beats peeps

Its been about 6 months since I last drove the '19 RDX Advance...The audio system in the vehicle that replaced the damaged RDX ('21 Corsair) is very good, but alas, doesn't sound like the 5.1 does in the RDX. With this said, I don't miss it (the RDX or the 5.1) It was very enjoyable to listen to as a special treat, and I fully appreciate and thank those here who provided the information and the tracks. For my routine car driving/listening, the Corsair does the trick for me. Very happy with things working as they should.
