Question about 4g/LTE usage

I am debating on whether to pick one of these up with the Advanced Package, but I would like to know if it has a built-in hotspot with 4G LTE that you can get from a cell provider (looks like AT&T). Pretty much all the reviews say it does, but there's nothing on Acura's website about it, and when I found the only YouTube link or owner's link on it, it appears to apply to Canada only. However on AT&T's website, they show US options with Acura. So, figured I'd ask here to get a simple answer, does anyone know if a 2019 Acura RDX w/ Advanced Package has the 4G/LTE Wifi Hotspot built-in?

Thanks in advance!

Is this what you’re looking for?

Thanks TxLady! I had ran across that page, but just found nothing on Acura's page or the owners manual that I could see supported the 4G LTE hotspot service. (Except for Canada's site which had something on it).

Have you called the customer support number shown at the bottom of the page? I’m interpreting it that you have to pay for their connect service which is part of the Acuralink. I’d start with the number on this page and see if they can’t help you,

in doing a google search, I found thie following comment on this website: https://www.continentalacura.com/acura-rdx-technology/

Entertainment

You’ll control more than navigation and climate control from your True Touchpad Interface.

Additional features include:
  • 16-Channel ELS Studio 3D Audio: Developed by Panasonic and tuned by Grammy®-winning music producer Elliott Scheiner, the new sound system uses ultra-thin ceiling-mounted speakers to enhance audio.
  • Next-Generation AcuraLink with 4G LTE Wi-Fi: Sync with your smartphone using next-gen AcuraLink and browse the web using a built-in Wi-Fi hotspot.

Awesome!! Thanks again! It definitely looks like it has it, it was just odd not to see it anywhere on Acura or Acuralink's website. But, I'm glad it does.

Thanks!

Adding data plan from carrier other than AT&T

I'm in Canada and the data service from ATT is priced much higher than that for US customers. US folks can get unlimited data for $20 monthly whereas in Canada it's $15 for just 1GB, $35 for 4GB and $70 for 10GB.

The vehicle must have its own IMEI number (a SIM card or embedded somehow) otherwise the carrier can't provision a data service. If one had the IMEI number then it might be possible to add a data plan from ones existing carrier such as people do when they get a data-only plan for their iPad or other tablet.

Anyone have any insights or guidance on this?

When I purchased my RDX, the hotspot was in "Dealer Demo Mode" and was working, but then it stopped after a day or so and now if I go to the Hot Spot, it provides this information (See pic). My salesperson knew nothing about the hot spot since they hadn't been trained yet on the new RDX. I am in the USA.

I just went to the website and signed up. We get 3 free months or 3 free GB, whichever comes first. Sign up was really easy and you do NOT need to give them a credit card to get the free trial. You will need your VIN and that's it.

I am going to see how the signal strength is (I live out in the sticks) at home and around town before I decide to sign up for real, but it's nice to have a trial to see how it all goes down.

Thanks for the info, i just went and signed up for the free trial. I like that you don't have to put in CC and then remember to cancel at the end of 3 months.

I have been using mine with a Radar Detector that uses a WiFi connection for updates and road info (Escort 360c) and I can see the use as there is a bandwidth progress bar that shows how much of your free 3Gb is remaining. So far it hasn't gone down much.

I have an old Mobile Share plan from AT&T to which I just added the car.
On the web site it says that you can add the car to one of those (discontinued) plans for $10/mo. What it doesn’t say is that you cannot do this online, There only the $20 unlimited plan. To add the car to an existing shared data plan you must call AT&T (611 on your mobile) and ask to speak to the Connected Car department. No other department can do this correctly.

Now the car reports that I do not have a data plan, but the hotspot does in fact work fine. This is a side effect of using a mobile share plan. The myvehicle.att.com site indicates that the car is managed on that plan and that I must use the myAT&T app to manage my data.

In the end it works, and I’ll just ignore the normal Acura apps and sites.

Did you notice if the three months began from car purchase or the date you signed up? Or if there was a timeframe from car purchase to sign up time, since I don’t plan to sign up right away, and want to wait a couple of months.

It is very hard to get information sometimes these days.

Hey Madd Dog,

No, I never noticed anything about when the 3 months started, although I am pretty sure it was 3 months from activation. I activated mine in the first week, so it will be hard to tell. As it is, I think I'll be burned through my free 3Gb before the 3 month period ends.

Madd Dog 08-02-2018 06:23 PM

I have a call in to my salesman, who does seem to appreciate good questions so he knows for the future. It is just not a good idea for me to sign up now and give it a real test. I would prefer to wait a few months. When, and if, I find something out, I will post it.

I discussed this with my salesperson when we got our RDX, you don’t have to sign up immediately for the free hot spot. We may try it out on a trip later this year.

I’m not really sold on the need for a hot spot. We don’t have 2 kids in the backseat on tablets, and with Apple Carplay on my phone, I’m not sure what use we would have for it, other than maybe my wife using her iPad in the passenger seat instead of her phone. But we have tethering on out mobile share plan, so she could still use her iPad without adding a monthly fee to our AT&T bill.

That’s what we’re thinking, using it on a drive to Florida for February. If nothing else, it is 2 gigs of data that can be used on the iPad while Carplay runs on the phone.

it was cheaper for me to add the hotspot than increase my current data plan so it was a win/win. And now my older teenagers don’t drain the entire data plan when we take trips - like a recent 700 mile round trip. And you can cancel and restart as you like as there is no contract.
