Weird issue with Gas/Range meter on dash
My 2020 Advanced is coming up on 2000 miles soon...already.
My MPG is increasing to 21.2 today....however I noticed something weird regarding the Range measurement. I'll be driving and I'll notice the Range measurement does go down very fast. For example...I recently filled up and it stayed around 316 Miles range for probably 10-20 minutes of driving. However, when I accelerate or need to get around someone on the freeway, the Range measurement begins to drop substantially. It almost makes it seem like I'm getting 1 MPG...I drive maybe 10 miles but it drops some 20 miles in the measurement. Meanwhile, my MPG continues to increase...so what gives? Why does it drop so much and continue to drop once I accelerate on the fwy or something?

I think that's called the "carrot and stick" approach.

Sounds like it’s giving you instant feedback/calculations based on the position of the accelerator pedal at that moment? Just a guess. Hell I ignore the range to empty reading. When I hit a quarter tank, time to fill up!

I'm not sure I've ever figured out the consistency of the range calculation on any car I've ever had. No matter what it says or the brand of car I pretty much figure it's plus or minus 50 MI...lol.

Typically, when I fill the tank, the range goes anywhere from about 340 to 365. But there have be times where it went to over 400 miles. Same gas.
A pretty much useless bit of information.
I guess i samples the most recent X miles of gas consumption and uses that to project.

Range is projected based upon current level of tank and effective mpg over some recent interval.
I say this because I once set out from Carlsbad, NM heading west by way of El Paso, TX on a family road trip. Somehow I made it out of Carlsbad with only half a tank of fuel, driving right past a huge gas station strategically placed to circumvent such foolishness. Maybe it was the bat guano in the caverns.
Anyway, at some point as I was merrily cruising across the Chihauhuan Desert at 80+ mph I noticed that my trusty Garmin was giving me a distance to civilization that was distressingly similar to the range-to-empty displayed on my MDX's trip computer. Thus ensued an extended review of maps and discussions with my co-pilot, conducted in quiet but increasingly urgent voices ( so as not to overly alarm the back-seat juvenile passengers who were immersed in their overhead video entertainment ), culminating in my completely uncharacteristic decision to slow down and see if our fuel economy would improve enough to get us to a gas station.
As it turns out, you really do get better mileage at 60 mph, the range-to-empty increased steadily as we cruised at reduced speed, a gas station finally appeared like a desert mirage, and all was well, aside from frazzled nerves and a few muttered epithets. Lesson learned?

I have noticed a lot of variability in the gas guage. I’ll fill up, drive 2 miles home and then see the gas guards down by 1/8th. I get in the next day it’s back to full. I don’t know if it’s a bad sensor or bad sensor placement that’s just too sensitive to sloshing. Anyway, that may affect range and mpgs.
I’m currently on a 1200 mile road trip and my mpg and range has been terrible. Frustrating to feel that anxiety and have to fill up so often. Even more frustrating if it’s just because the sensor is not doing it’s job and I could actually go another 100 miles.

How low can it actually go?
Mine triggered the low fuel warning with 3 gallons left. Range said 25 miles remaining, which does not make sense because I get 24.8mpg calculated. Regardless, I filled up because I don’t want to run out of gas.
Has anyone pushed this?
Or is there no access to the last 2 gallons or is this another conservative warning?

It is not a question I am interested in pursuing in my car. My gas mileage always starts off terrible, but I still get around 20-21 in everyday driving abd around 25 on pure highway driving.
Yes, the gas tank is too small. They knew what the mpg is, and should have sized up the tank.

Some people think they keep gas tanks smaller to save weight and improve overall mileage. Another 4-5 gallons would have added only about 40 lb., but would have added about 100 miles of range. Well worth it, IMO.
Next thing you know, manufacturers will improve their CAFE ratings by only selling to skinny people. A very limited market in the US.

But it looks like it's only for 2020's and it "should" trigger a warning light.
