Thanks for taking the time to explain.
I still stand by it though. What about a boss that sees Acura in the same esteem as BMW, Lexus or Audi?
Literally that guy or gal's opinion. It's so theoretical it's not worth using it to base your decision was my point.

All you proved is that you don't understand nuances because you're just putting forth extreme examples.

Because you say that there is that much of a perceived difference between Acura and Audi?
Because you say that you can determine how someone else feels about those brands (the boss, for example)?
I'm not purposely being obtuse, I legitimately don't understand how you can stand by those assumptions.
Like I said, get back on topic.
Stop making this personal with your underhanded insults.
First and last warning.

again. Why do we think quality or reliability come with spending $$$?? Performance and luxury? Yes. Hyundai might not have the performance or performance but certainly beat out Acura in reliability.

All good, man.
We'll keep it moving.
I used such an extreme example because I think if you were trying to convey that
you are poor to someone...a 93 toyota would be something extreme enough to overcome
all the opinions on more current vehicles being discussed is all.

More like MY 2023 or 4
FWIW, the management of my last job tended to own cars like Honda, Toyota, Ford, etc., while a few employees had higher priced cars.
We management types were raising families, while some employees were either single, or married to money. None of us in management made any decisions based on what the employee was driving.

Why are we posting things that 99.99% of people don’t ever do to their cars? Do you know how many cars fail the moose test? Also the only time this matters is if you were driving 70 mph on the highway and all of a sudden you swerve to avoid debris. However at that speed any car will lose control. I’ve lost control in my G37x swerving like that at highway speeds to avoid a mattress. It would be way worse for the RDX to perform that type of maneuver. At lower speeds there’s ample time to slow down or stop to avoid this.
We don’t even know if the RDX would pass this test either, as I haven’t seen anything online about it. I bet 95% of the people who own the RDX SH-AWD never pushed the car hard on turns to enjoy its benefits over traditional AWD systems. I’ve never done this myself.

Nobody said anything about status; it’s about not appearing extravagant or giving people the perception that you’re living beyond your means. If my wife were to show up in a Bentley (and yes, we can easily afford one), it’ll say one of two things to her coworkers and boss: either she’s financially irresponsible, or she’s spoiled by having a husband with means. The former makes her look irresponsible, and the latter can breed resentment, especially when her coworkers share apartments and drive 20 year old hand-me-downs and her boss drives a Civic (academia does not pay all that well).

and why would she care what other people think about her? Hopefully she is employed not because she drives an average looking car, but rather her skills. If she is a valuable employee, she shouldn’t care what others think about her car. If the boss is resentful ahole, maybe time for new job
As to your suggestion of just looking for a new job, it must be nice to work in an environment where you can pick up and go, but that's not how academia works. If you leave without a good recommendation from your advisor, that's a huge red flag. Good luck finding another advisor to take you on, let alone a tenure-track position anywhere.
Let's take another example: I have a former classmate who drives a Camry to work every day, yet his weekend car is a 911 Turbo and McLaren. Why? Because he's a CEO of a startup, and if his employees see him with all this wealth, they're going to clamor for a bigger piece of the pie too. Though I suppose he could just fire everyone and hire people who know nothing about how much cars cost, right?

I can't easily afford a Bentley but at one point
I did have an S2000 and CTS-V Wagon and about 4 other beaters
parked out front. My neighbors think I sell drugs but I kinda like it that way.
Funny you guys mentions the perception bullshit at work...we had a Director
that was kinda known for being a stiff respek my authoritaaa ahole. When I
bought out the lease on my Mom's ex's black 04 TL and parked at work one day
he's like..."nice car, how can you afford that, I know what you make". I thought it
was funny but my boss was like, what a fucking prick.

Its all BS, stop worrying what others think about your car and stop paying attention who drives what. I got more important things in life than to worry what people think about my car or what others drive. Go to work and do your job, no reason to occupy your mind with this nonsense.

An RDX is about the same price as a 2006 Bentley GT. Not gonna lie, I wish I lived a lifestyle where I coulda bought one instead of the RDX (I know, I know, maintenance on a W12 is probably a little higher than a Honda engine, but still....).

Fine fine, I should have prefaced my claim with the word “new”. How much do they go for these days, 250k?

I mean, of course!
This one had a sordid past though...
I'm sure they aren't all that bad.
but lord have mercy...you better have deep pockets to get that thing road worthy again.
plus, you can just buy a 300M and get the same look and have your boss think you're
on welfare

Hmm. Not sure I see a 300m as similar to a Continental GT. But hey, if it has problems.... LS swap! or maybe... K20C1 swap!

There is no reason to asses the value of an employee based upon which car he or she happens to drive. As a manager, the only value is how an employee performs his or her tasks, how reliable the employee is, and what that employee’s potential and desires are. Give the best performers what they value the most, within your ability to do so.

Thanks.
I always felt that what you DO is more important than what you ARE. Coming from where I came from, everybody is something.
For quite some time, I was not really aware that other people didn’t think that.

How did we get here from "I'm not sure I'm happy with my car?"

I have friend in Germany who owns several apartment buildings. Many are a couple of hours away. He normally drives a Mercedes S class, but when he goes to some of the "lower rent" houses, he drives his son's VW Passat because he doesn't want to come across like a slumlord - so yes, it is a thing, although I never thought twice about what my boss thinks about what I drive.
How did we get here from "I'm not sure I'm happy with my car?"

I still haven't fallen in love with my car unfortunately...
I do find it funny the people talking about their bosses and co-workers. I work in tech and no1 gives a shit about what car anyone is driving at my last three companies (people had beaters, fisker karmas, AMG Gla and Rovers)... My lady works in a more corporate financial job and they are all haters there when people have nice cars...

My lady comes home and talks about if there's ever a new car in parking lot they all try and figure out who owns it. There was a young gal who bought a model 3 (cheapest model) she lived at home, no kids and no bills... All the women there that had multiple kids and couldn't afford the car were all pissed at her... Haters gonna hate I guess
p.s. I'm in management and LOVE to see my employees being able to afford nice things
