The new car "smell" is killing me
Hi all,
Curious your experience. I picked up a 2020 RDX on 12/26 - really love the car, except...
... the new car smell. The smell itself is not offensive or very strong, unless I leave the car out in the hot Florida sun for a time and then get in. It's obnoxious and almost toxic. The first time I did this the gases literally created a burning sensation in the back of my throat and I could not bear to breathe it (opened the windows and left the car to come back in later). My wife experienced the same - the air inside the vehicle, when heated up, was pretty much unbreathable.
Anyone experience the same? We bought a new Infiniti last year and did not have this problem. How long before all the volatiles burn off?

That seems really unusual. My car was delivered new with <20 miles on it, and had no such smell. If I were you, I'd take it back to the dealer for an assessment.
Until then, I'd say open the sunroof (at least a crack) when you leave the vehicle, and maybe get some baking soda to leave inside.

Love the new car smell. I miss it already. It didn't last nearly as long as other cars I've had. After just a couple weeks it was barely there.
I guess some people are more sensitive than others but I've heard that manufacturers are attempting to minimize it as much as possible. And yes, the heat brings it out more.

It's not really the smell that's the issue - its the amount of chemicals in the air when it sits in the sun. Never had a vehicle like this. Will check with the dealer - perhaps the treated it with something.

I am down here in Naples. Brooklyn ain’t Florida when it comes to air. I can see how a new car smell could make it hard to breathe down here. Heck, with the heat and 200% humidity on a lot of days, it is hard to breathe in an oxygent tent, let alone a new car.
At least the RDX has leather, not naugahyde.

agree, the smell is nice, but chemicals that are in it are not nice.
With that being said, I find that RDX new car smell is no different than other cars. Keep your window slightly open whenever possible.

Love the new car smell. I'm gonna be sad the day I lose it. With regular cleaning the smell should last 4 years.

It is bad and it gets worse in hot weather. But it didn't bother me as much and cracking the windows open for a few min at the start of a drive usually takes care of things. Definitely worse than with my prior BMWs.
You could try some kind of air purifier such as
