First Service (Oil Change)

What are all your thoughts on when to get the first service (oil change, brakes, etc)?
I'm at 60% oil life & 4,500 km (2,800 miles)

My pas cars had early 1st service, including engine oil, transmission fluid, brake service,....

DHood 10-28-2018 06:10 AM

Your vehicle will tell you when it wants an Oil Change, it will show a Service Light Indicator, and I would go with that. My understanding is that the System to determine this is pretty sophisticated and takes into account Mileage, Heat, RPMs etc.

Madd Dog 10-28-2018 07:41 AM

When the indicator gets to 15%, make your plans.

securityguy 10-28-2018 08:06 AM

I change mine every 5K miles regardless.

russianDude 10-28-2018 08:30 AM

Follow the car, no need to change oil earlier.

Coolguy 10-28-2018 02:26 PM

Don't change oil ahead of time, specially the first one. Cars comes with special oil to help engine break-in so don't rush for oil change.

Thats what we were told as well on our 2011 CRV..pretty sure it may have stated that in the manual.

they did that long time back, they dont use break in oil anymore. Its just there is no reason to change it before computer tells you

in the CRV, wasnt a break in oil....was extra "moly" I just follow the manual. What would a car forum be without "oil" questions, lol Well same goes for Bike forums, well, pretty much anything that takes oil,lol

Honda still says to not change the oil early because the grease lube has high amounts of moly which help reduce friction and help with break-in. Plus it is also a micro-polishing agent so if there are any sharp metal parts it will polish and dull them.

Why not at 3k? :tomato:

so when my first gen rdx came factory filled with mobil1 you think they added their own additives to mobil1 for break in?

is this in the manual?

Very simple math in 5K increments and I have been doing it this way for as long as I can remember:thumbsup:

The implication is that the grease that was applied to internal engine parts to aid assembly remains and is incorporated into the engine oil. Molybdenum disulfide is apparently considered a "dry lubricant", not a polishing agent. Thanks for bringing this up in Yet Another Oil Thread, because it actually motivated me to learn something.

yes, but then you not following MID and you have to keep your own records when to do other services.
its a lot easier when you simply follow what MID tells you based on your driving patterns. If you drive city, the oil change will come sooner vs highway driving.

My first gen turbo took synthetic oil every 8000km at $200/service. Does this turbo require the same oil? I really enjoy the $70 service every 15,000km with the 2nd gens.

I went to the service desk an inquired..$55 and they said that was with synthetic for a 2019 RDX

first of all, I dont know who did you service, but I get my mobil1 oil for $25 at wallmart and change oil myself. Dealer charges $60-70 for synthetic oil change.
and yes, 3rd gen also requires synthetic

Like the other poster said its the assembly lube that is rich in moly mixes with the factory filled oil that they don't want you to dump early. It is in the manual and they specifically say that the factory fill should not be changed out early.

ok thx. I would not change oil sooner regardless. I keep it simple, follow mid. DIY oil change is cheap.
I bet you dont even need ramps or jack to change oil on rdx

I only ever take it to the dealer. I'm also in Canada BTW, so 25% is currency.

Madd Dog 11-03-2018 09:04 AM

Even when I did more on my cars than cabin and air filters and wipers, I never thought that what I would save by messing with an oil change was worth it.

it takes me about 15min to do it in my garage. Dealer is always at least an hour, plus you need to drive to dealer. Save time & money. Its easy, and I enjoy it.

Based on the way the oil life indicator is going with mileage, it looks like service would be due every 5000 miles. Yeah, they have all these fancy indicators, but I'm not sure how sophisticated they are. My BMWs had them and all it did was indicate service due approximately every 15000 miles (with the 2003). They lowered it to 10000 miles in the 2nd or 3rd year of the turbo engines.

On my 2008 RDX service indicator for oil gives different results based on how you drive. When my wife used to drive it for a lot of short trips and city driving, it was going around 3700-4000 miles. I am now driving mostly highway, and get around 6000-6500 miles until it says 0%. I'd expect similar or probably better MID capability in 2019. I think those are reasonable OCIs given its turbo engine, which is much harder on oil than your typical engine.
I run mobil1 oil filter, and change filter every other oil change.

MI-RDX 11-03-2018 10:48 AM

IMO the OCI analysis is pretty good. My '14 Cadillac had it and it would definitely incorporate a number of variables in determining oil life remaining. Summers I could easily go 9,000 miles before it would indicate a change was needed, while during the winter when I was doing more short trips and less highway it would indicate service was due between 5-6,000 miles.
