Apple Car Play connection issues
After updating to 1.5.1, I started getting occasional issues of not being able to connect to apple car play. I would connect my phone, and apple car play would be greyed out, as if car does not realize phone is connected. It happens often enough (30% of time). The only way to resolve is to reboot infoteinment or shutdown car so infoteinment is off. I have apple usb cable, same one I used before update. This seems to be new in 1.5.1, as I never had this issue before. I tried factory reset, re-pairing phone, and issue is still there.
I have iphone XS max, with latest ios. Its the same iphone I used before update.
anyone else have this issue?

I have apple usb cable, when it does not work I can be removing cable and putting it back, it will never work until reboot. Probably worth trying new cable, as I am running out of options.

I haven’t noticed any more problems with 1.5.1 than I have with previous versions. Occasionally I plug it in and it’s not recognized, but unplugging and replugging solves the problem. I’ve never had to reboot the head unit for any reason, ever.

I've had the same issue with Connectivity after the latest SW update. We're using a short 12" Apple Certified Cable. After rooting infotainment system all is well. Painful when you are driving the car. Did not occur in previous 2 years of ownership.

Yep, it was not happening before the update to 1.5.1, so must be software related.

I have a 2020 purchases around the same time as you (October, I think) and I have had very few issues after the update that came before this one. That leads me to think it’s hardware not software related.

It’s possible that you have a loose or faulty USB port. I believe other users have found this to be a problem and that it’s fixable.

I'm not saying Acura doesn't have problems with their software, but if his vehicle is the same as mine, and his software is the same as mine, how else can you explain the fact that he has constant problems and I have almost none?

The other item that should be tried if none of the other things work is to backup their IPhone & then do a master reset. Then restore it from the backup. I was having connection issues some time ago and once I did the master reset of my IPhone the issues went away.

Same here the hiccups stopped after a back up, setup as new, and then restored the iPhone. Been about 4 months so far and everything is fine. I had a bad install on the latest and greatest iOS that was released in Sept 2020.

Was it hiccup while using Apple Car Play? Mine either connects or does not connect when I plug in the phone. But once its connected, it stays connected and seems to be stable. My issue that when I plug USB cable, car does not recognize that Car Play is connected. The USB starts charging the phone, and I can be removing and putting cable back, nothing happens. But if I reboot infotainment, Car Play connects.

It was exactly that up to 10 to 15 times a day. Even my iPhone looked different after the reset and I had features that were not present before. 10s Max

If iPhone or iPhone software has an issue, in this case I would need to restart my phone to make Car Play work, but instead I need to reboot the infoteinment. I am not sure I understand why this points to a phone being a problem and not the car?

The three finger reboot would not solve it. I would restart my phone and that wouldn’t solve it. All I know is after I did a clean install on my phone my infotainment system has not pitched a fit with car play. It was definitely the phones fault in this case. Like I said my symptoms were exactly yours and it was driving me crazy. There had to be some corrupt files in the phone causing the problems. I did have a bad download and install of apples iOS from sept last year. I recommend trying it with your phone. The only thing the dealer kept doing when I complained was resetting the infotainment system and that did nothing.

Will try to backup and restore my iPhone.... The 3 finger reboot would fix it for me, thats why I am skeptical restoring the phone will help.

Did full backup, than erase all, and restore on my iphone. Waste of time, still occasionally can not connect. I think if I connect phone right away when system boots it works, but if I do it 5min or so later it may never recognize the phone. I was poking around in diagnostic settings, and it did show USB port red, but I could not find anything in error logs. Maybe its a hardware issue with infotainment, but its a tough one to convince the dealer.

Are you using a OEM Apple cable?? Surprised it didn’t work. When I go to the same diagnostic menu it shows mine as red also when the phone is connected but no issues with the connection. The only other thing I have done is I had my USB plug in my car replaced but this was way before I had any connection issues. The plug fell inside its housing because the flash drive had a really tight fit. What iPhone do you have?? Have you ever done a full factory reset on your infotainment system wiping all the settings??

iphone is XS max. Yes, I did full factory reset after installing latest 1.5.2 update. My cable is apple cable, I put a new one when I bought a car. I have another brand new apple cable, will swap it just to rule out the cable.
To rule out the phone, when it happened, I tried rebooting just the phone, but same issue. Only when I reboot infotainment it goes away.
btw, this crap only started happening with the 1.5.2 update, never had an issue when car could not recognize apple car play, that is not to say that something could have broken and its not 1.5.2 fault

Wow I thought my system had gremlins! Between the system resets and phone resets mine is good. We even have the same iPhone. I’m at a loss on this one. If I come across anything else I’ll hit you up.

Yea I still get pages and pages of errors but the system runs smoothly. Most of them are meter errors. Acura gave me the it’s normal and all the RDX’S have these errors excuse. That went in one ear and out the other. Im just glad the system is acting normally.

yep, got tons of meter errors too. Does anyone know what it means? Seems like a sloppy software that is its reporting error but its not really an error, or if it is really an error, than it needs to be fixed.

I don’t have a clue what it means and I know the techs I deal with have no clue since the can’t tell me anything about the errors. I would bet the farm it’s the root of all our troubles with this system. Sloppy software coding.

I noticed a pattern, if I connect phone shortly after car is started, it works, but if I do it later it may not always work.

I also have my iPhone paired through bluetooth for phone calls and audio. Maybe both have conflict. Definitely seems to work pretty much every time if I connect phone before starting a car or shortly after. It seems to have an issue if you driving and try to connect Apple Car Play later on.

Here is my report. If I wait 10 or more minutes to plug in my phone after starting the car car play works. The only difference is if my iPhone is locked I will get a message on the Lock Screen on my phone asking me to unlock my phone to use usb accessories. When I unlock it my phone connects. If my phone is already unlocked it connects immediately. No issues if I don’t wait 10 or more minutes either. My phone must be unlocked for it to connect to the car. As for a Bluetooth/car play conflict none for me. When my phone is not plugged in it connects via Bluetooth. When it’s plugged in car play takes over and you can’t use Bluetooth. The system will tell you to disconnect car play to use Bluetooth.

Funny you say that because mine is set to allow car play while locked and I still have to unlock my phone for it to connect to the system. My phone treats the connection to the car as a USB accessory hence the message.
