I think one factor in the range on the speedometer range might be layout. I mean with 75 to 80 mph max speed limits in the US they distribute the numbers so that would be at the top of the gauge. Then 80 mph would be in the middle of the range as the top number so 160 would be at the end of the range. If they went from, say, 0 to 250, most speeds people drive would be way to the left and if they only went to 100 it would be at the right. It really doesn't have anything to do with the top speed of the vehicle. I dunno...just a guess.
