So Close On 2016....But Having Second Thoughts Now

Here's the story. 2 weekends ago, I brought my '11 RDX in for service and since it was going to be a couple hours (B1235 codes), I strolled into the sales dept and asked to test drive an MDX. They got me into a 2016 white AWD base (I was interested in tech but for a test drive, this would do). They let me take it out alone, so I brought it back home for my husband to try out. Overall, we really liked the way it drove; it was quiet, felt very solid and composed, and I do like those jewel eye headlights. However, the infotainment system was a huge letdown, but I was willing to overlook it since I did enjoy how it drove. I got to drive it on the highway at 80 mph, but we don't have much weekend traffic around where I live, so I didn't experience any hunting for gears or surging that some have reported. This could be an issue on my 170 mile roundtrip commute through NY and NJ, though.

Upon return to the dealership, I worked out a deal on a fathom blue pearl AWD tech model ($47,400). They were going to give me $12,000 for my '11 RDX tech with 113,000 miles, which I thought was very fair. I told the guy I needed to sleep on it and since my RDX was ready, I went home. We discussed it for the next couple of days and I ended up getting a loan through a credit union for 1.9% for 48 months (best Acura could do was 2.9% for 48 months).

So now I have the loan paperwork in hand, but am having second thoughts on the vehicle after reading up on it a bit more. The transmission issues are really scaring me off. People are reporting rough shifts, hesitating in low gears (causing scary merging and maneuvering), surging, power cutting out completely after the dashboard lights up with multiple errors, randomly shifting into neutral while driving, etc. I'm just not feeling 100% comfortable with this vehicle and I'm so disappointed. I really wanted to love it, as I've looked at it with some envy for a few years now.

So my sales guy is currently on vacation until next week, and we are scheduled to go in on the 28th to sign the paperwork and take delivery.

I guess my question is, for those of you having some or all of these issues, would you buy the car again? And has the TSB corrected at least some of the issues, and if so, which ones?

I did not experience any of the above problems during my test drive, but I am hesitating to throw down so much money for a car that could potentially have huge issues and also leave me without a vehicle for my very long traffic-filled commute. I'm feeling like the safe choice would be to give this new transmission a year or two and see if they can work out the kinks before I make the jump. My husband is feeling the same way and wants to test drive the Volvo XC90 this weekend.

Another thing to consider is the MMC is coming out with diamond pentagon grill or whatever they are calling it, exhaust tips and some other exterior changes. Have you taken a look at the pics online?

Thanks, yes, I did see that thread. The MMC changes didn't wow me, so I thought I'd get a 16 for a little cheaper than the 17s would go for. I was really hoping for Apple CarPlay too.

My RDX is getting up there in miles but is ok for now and has been very well maintained, so I'm not absolutely needing a new car this minute. Although my iPod is now unsupported since the iOS9 update. I really do miss it on my commute. XM is ok but I find myself channel surfing a lot which can get annoying.

Personally I have had no issues w the MDX. I will say it does have a slight lag to get going when you hit the gas but def not any worse than my Turbo RDX so I suppose I'm kind of used to it. If you put the car in sport or even normal IDS you notice this less than in comfort. My 2 cents.

I too am used to an occasional lag to get going on my RDX. It's really the other bigger issues that are concerning me.

i bought the 2016 awd avanced this year and i no issues, if you searched the forum, most of the issues are with previous years not the 2016. i would not compare this SUV with the volvo or any other premium SUV, the maintenance on all other premium SUV will be more expensive, i would only compare against the infiniti. mainly is about preference, you drove it and if you like good if not keep researching other SUV. i love my MDX.

I would test drive everything in the class before making your decision. Also try to take the MDX for another test drive in local roads to see how the transmission behaves.

From what I've read, some have issues and some absolutely has none.

Lots of people have been asking me if they should get the 2016 version of the MDX as well. Yes, you hear about all of these transmission stuff, but I cannot personally comment on it because my MDX has not been around long enough for me to conclude there are actual transmission issues.

And with that being said, I don't think anyone can conclude that the transmission in the 2016 is bad because the model hasn't been around long enough.

I personally do not have any issues and I bought the MDX knowing these anecdotes beforehand. If you have a weird feeling about it, I say just wait for the 2017 model since they will be using a different transmission. I myself would not commit to something that makes me feel uncomfortable. I was already comfortable with the MDX regardless of the issues discussed online.

Really loving the blue and I'm happy to be back in the gray interior. Still getting to know each other, but so far, I'm very happy!

I have the 9 speed and love it. The odd time at low speed, I have felt a rough shift but it does not bother me. The majority of time it is very smooth.

90% of the 9 speed complaints are from people that don't even own the car. They test drove it or got one as a loaner but like their 1991 Integra better.

Same here. I used to hate driving in the weekend and can't stand traffic. With my purchased on the 16 MDX tech, I can't wait to hit the road during my off date for road trips and do not mind sitting in traffic.

Congrats on your purchase! Like others have said, you will love it more and more. We've had our 16' Tech w/ AcuraWatch for about a year now (purchased 07/15), we just got back from our 2nd road trip NY-FL in it without any issues! This is def our "go to" vehicle for long trips with the kids. We now have just over 13k on it. I must agree, there is a slight lag when taking off in "comfort" mode, but we're ok with that. We also have the grey interior...it looks great but a pain to keep clean...keep some baby wipes close by, they come in handy and does a good job cleaning the seats

Again, congrats!
