Need a new suv

Is the tahoe and the mdx two diffrent worlds?? Talking about a family suv, my 3rd child is on its way so i have to say good bye to the tlx, now, im not sure what to get, im not worry about gas, Looking is priority, im looking for a hybrid mdx or a tahoe Lt, mdx for sure looks more sportier and luxurious than the tahoe but tahoe has something else i like maybe i just like the look of the tahoe

You can't tow anything with the hybrid, no entertainment available with the hybrid, and only 2nd row captain chairs if you get the hybrid Adv model. That leaves a kid stuck in the extremely small 3rd row of the Adv hybrid and less room for baby gear if you travel.

What makes the hybrid 3rd row less spacious than the awd?

Depends if you are looking for a MDX Tech hybrid (2nd row bench for up to 3 folks) or MDX Adv hybrid (2nd row captain chairs for 2 only). The 3rd Gen MDX isn't as wide as the 2nd Gen MDX and can be a little tight for a car seat and 2 folks in the 2nd row bench. You might have more room for 3 kids+carseat/booster seats with the Pilot, Passport, or Odyssey compared to the MDX.

Yeah thats actually what im dealing with 2 boosters and one car seat plus momma have to go on the back too, the problem is i like the 2018 + mdx also i went to see the aspec trim and it look awesome, but i see the tahoe look much bigger but less luxurious also expensive. What ar your thoughts on the Q7?

We have 2017 Sport Hybrid Tech. 3rd row is plenty of room for my two girls (8 & 10) plus their booster seats. It's not that bad. Adults wouldn't be happy back there, but little kids are fine. Plenty of room in 2nd row for baby car seat + 2 adults. We specifically wanted the Tech Hybrid for 3 seats in 2nd row. Didn't care for Captain's chairs in Advanced model. I don't tow and couldn't care less about the Entertainment package...get your kids iPad is better value. Get MDX Sport Hybrid Tech. It's a great family/road trip car. Super quiet and very fun to drive.

I haven't looked at the Q7. I love the way the Q7 looks and the level of tech; but, the base striped down 2.0L Turbo Q7 can starts where the MDX Adv or MDX sport hybrid ends in price. Out of all 3rd row competitors like Acura, Lexus, Audi, M-B, or BMW, I think the Infiniti QX60 has the most room for any combo of passengers and car seats/boosters up to 6-7 to sit most comfortably in all rows. You just have to deal with CVT, no apple car play, and less sporty drive compared to the Acura

I think your best bet is to go check these out in person and bring your booster seats. Try to install them and see if they fit. Also test drive each to see which one works best for your family. It may be that neither really works and you have to check out other options. You won't know until you try them out.

I'm taking a close look at the Q7. It's a lot more money than a MDX Hybrid but you get a lot of things not available in the dated MDX. You have to go for the Prestige model to get the driver assistance package but that also gets you a lot of other tech. It can tow 7,700 pounds with the tow package if that is important to you. You should be able to get discounts around 6-12% off MSRP. One major negative is there is no spare tire and no room to add one. Even worse, tire sizes are unique to the point that they are not typically in stock at many places. Getting a flat in a Q7 could be a huge ordeal. Cost of ownership will probably be a bit more compared to the MDX as well.

The Kia Telluride looks like a pretty good value but not right now. Demand for the fully loaded SX Prestige is so high that dealers are loading up the few they get with add-ons and in some cases doing "market adjustments" where they tack on another $4K-$5K.

The Lincoln Aviator is another one I'm keeping my eye on. I hope they start hitting dealers soon.

Pricing on a 2019 MDX should start becoming more favorable to us as we get closer to the 2020 release. Unless Acura adds some kind of must-have feature to the 2020 then getting a deal on a 2019 is the safest bet.

On a recent business trip to Denver / Ft Collins, I had a GMC Yukon rental. Having owned a 2000 Tahoe a while back (and owned Honda/Acura SUV's since), I was pleasantly surprised at just how much better this Yukon/Tahoe drove and the overall experience. It was tight, nimble for its size, got decent MPG's and was pleasing to be inside. Plus, when the group from work wanted to go out for dinner, it had all the space we needed. I think that the MDX is sportier to drive overall, but if I had a family with several kids with car seats or a growing set of boys, I'd be tempted for something with more usable space than the MDX, and the Yukon would definitely be on my short list....

Can't personally see getting a Tahoe or Yukon unless I was a federal agent.

With 3 kids I would look into the Pilot, the Tahoe is a little big for my taste.

Does a Minivan enter into consideration? For 3 kids, there really isnt anything better. The Honda Odyssey is Awesome. Had one for 220k miles, sold it to a friend, and they are still driving it (now 250k miles). Basic maintenance (oil, tires, brakes) and the 100k maintenances were all it ever needed.

I’d imagine cross shopping the MDX with the GMC Acadia more so than the Tahoe.

I ended up with a nice 16 mdx advance last month. I bought it for myself, but my wife has taken it now. Before I purchased the mdx (I own an 08 RL too) I wanted an f150 which had great power and comfort under 40k. So I tried to rent one to see if I could use it for my work. But they made a mistake and didn’t have one, but had a 19 Tahoe LT. I’d been interested in those too. So I rented that instead. It was really nice, roomy, easy to drive and had Apple car play which is a great feature I have in my s4. I would have looked a bit harder at the Tahoe, but price range was 50s and I wanted the one I had rented which was more. If I had three kids I would have gone Tahoe or F150 Double cab. But with two and a dog the MDX is fine for that. It’s such a great suv for power and comfort. I took it it on a 2500 mile road trip right after I got it and it was flawless and 25.9 avg mpg. It drives nicer than my LX 570 that I had a couple years ago. I had a Ford Flex before this and it was a great car, but the longevity of the cvt transmission worried me. Otherwise it was rock solid and a great family car. Good in all weather too.

I am considering RDX 2019, 2.0T.
I live in the north eastern US, where it does get a little cold from Dec to Mar. I have been hearing about some Oil dilution issues in Honda and Acura, but then again some say its only on the Honda 1.5 T. I was wondering if anyone here could help me clarify this. I test drove the car and liked everything else. I was going for the base model with remote starter add on.
I am really hoping this would last me a long time with out any sort of major repairs. I am coming from an Audi and really sick of maintenance bills.
Thanks a lot in advance!

Are you thinking sh-awd or just fwd for the base RDX? A good set of snow tires and sh-awd will make your RDX almost unstoppable in bad weather. At the price of the new RDX base is around the same as an used 17-18 MDX base or tech depending on mileage. I love the extra room of the MDX if your family will grow, like to travel, or need to tow anything in the 3500lbs-5000lbs range.

I was really considering replacing my 08 RDX with a 19 RDX. I made the mistake of test driving a 19 MDX and the MDX is on another level above the RDX in ride, comfort, sound level, sportiness, luxury touches, and space. Not much if any of a mpg penalty with the V-6 compared to the I-4T. I now have a 19 MDX along with my 11 MDX (still kept the 08 RDX).

I am considering the AWD. I dont think I would need snow tires (I did not on the Audi). I know my friends have had MDX older generation ~ 2013 and always had good things to say about it not costing much at all for maintenance. Hence, I was really considering Acura. But my data is anecdotal. Are there any issues with the 2.0T oil dilution or anything else that is major concern?

Not sure what Acura did differently from the 2.3T in the 07-12 RDX compared to the 1.5T and 2.0T for the Honda and Acura line-up? I had zero issues with fuel in my oil with my 08 RDX with +163,000 miles. It seems to becoming an issue with the 1.5T and hit/miss with the 2.0T now. Acura (Honda) does make it right; but, it might be 4-8 years down the road before they admit there was an issue and provide a dealer fix. This happened to my A/C compressor on my 08 RDX, magnetic suspension on my MDX Advance, and oil consumption issue mostly with 10-13 MDXs. The 19 RDX could be on its 2nd-3rd owner and might be close to 100,000 miles on the odo before Acura offers an extended warranty to fix the fuel in oil problem if it gets much worse.

You will still have the basic 4/50k warranty and 6/70k powertrain to help with the oil in fuel issue down the road.

I live in southern NH, and have had a '13 MDX SH-AWD, a '12 TL SH-AWD, and a '17 MDX SH-AWD - and without a doubt that setup will get you thru a winter up here and never leave you wanting more traction. The debate about whether you need snow tires is definitely subjective. I know that for me I always put snows on my vehicles in the winter - but I also live in an area that has some dirt roads and really hilly and shaded backroads I travel - so the extra traction of snow tires pays off in spades for me. So from a SH-AWD standpoint, you're going to never look back for something with better snow behavior.

In terms of the oil dilution with the turbo, I can't offer any direct information since all my cars have a naturally aspirated V6 (except the wife who has the Sport Hybrid RLX, but that's another conversation). I can offer an observation about the current RDX compared to other recent Acuras I've owned/leased. I had a '15 RDX AWD that had a decent motor (the 3.5L v6), but an awful AWD system. I would have loved the new RDX to have the v6, but it didn't. I ended up with my '17 MDX SH-AWD largely to get a v6 w/SH-AWD - but I also like the added space/comfort/refinement of the mechanics of the MDX. I've driven several '19 RDX loaners, and while they're more current from a technology standpoint, the refinement and stability on the road does not compare (IMHO) to the MDX. That plus many of the glitches with the infotainment system in the RDX would steer me away (until they work the bugs out in future years).

In the end it's your personal choice. The 1st gen RDX's were very solid and the turbos and motor were fairly bulletproof. Whether the 3rd gen RDX's have similar long-term success is still something yet to be seen - or whether the issues that are seen in the CR-V's turbo 4 will be similar for the RDX. But they're different motors, so I wouldn't assume so out of hand...

good luck - andy
