In the market for a 2019 mdx hybrid. Any thoughts or experiences with reliability of the hybrid model. Worried that so many electrical components could affect long term reliability! Pls share your thoughts!

All new cars will have tons of electronic components. My 2018 Hybrid's main computer was replaced due to issues and it was covered under warranty. Other than that, everything is good. If you are concerned about the electronic components, Hybrid or electric cars might not be suited for you.

In general it's fair to question the reliability of the hybrid if for no other reason then it's only on the 3rd year of being produced, and it's a model that's produced in very small numbers compared to 3.5L MDX's. By all indications however even those who have had issues (which isn't everyone) Acura has taken care of those issues for them (it might just take them longer to diagnose and pin point the problem). Of course long term reliability post warranty is unknown right now for both the hybrid and 3.5L MDX when talking about a brand new 2019. In general if you like Acura and you like the hybrid there isn't any reason not to get one. Even when Acura has issues/warranty claims, they appear to be very good about standing behind their products, which can't be said about every brand.

The sport hybrid does have a longer warranty period of 8yrs/100,000 miles on the hybrid components. All the other tech is pretty much the same used by Acura/Honda and is very reliable +100,000 miles. The only wild card is the 3.0L engine+7DCT since that is unique to the MDX sport hybrid.

You are getting way more with the sport hybrid with the $1500 price increase over a similar MDX sh-awd IF you don't need towing.

I have only 17,000 miles on my '17 Sport Hybrid, so far very good. Great performance and 27mpg. Maybe some higher mileage Hybrid owners will see this thread and give up an update on their experience.

Don’t forget you can shop around for the extended warranty. You don’t have to get it the same day you get the car. I got a price from these guys and was able to negotiate the price down on my wife’s pilot.

I just bought a 19 hybrid tech and pick it up tomorrow I probably won’t keep it past warranty so I did not go for the extended this time

We're about to hit 24K miles on our '17 Sport Hybrid and everything has been flawless so far with the vehicle as far as the hybrid specific components are concerned.

I'm getting it ceramic coated this month. so I'm not having the dealership wash or detail it. I don't want their shop monkeys adding swirl marks. Just having them vacuum and wipe down interior. I told salesman don't even run it thru their auto wash and He looked at me crazy .

lol yeah they aren't good about keeping the paint pristine. Even auto body shops are bad because they crank them out as fast as possible to profit based on volume, and they don't have people with 10+ yrs experience doing detailing work. There's a guy near me who does it on the side but he's booked out far in advance as each vehicle takes him an entire weekend. He's super expensive too but you definitely get what you pay for. What is the ceramic coating you are referring to?

I have a friend who owns a detail shop. He is certified with ceramic pro brand. So i'm getting the 5 yr ceramic pro. And it takes 2 days to do unless the shop has the uv drying lights (no shop does because costs too much). For the 5 year they coat it once, then allow it to dry overnight then another coat.
He did my wife's pilot when we bought it with a 2 year coating and that just takes 1 day and it was so silky smooth. For that I just traded him with smoked bbq pork and sides for his crew but this time I'm giving his 16yr daughter my 04 tl with 240k miles and no ac and suspension noises.

The dealership jacked up my Fathom Blue Pearl sh-sh-awd in their wash bay. I already have scratches/swirl marks from one wash. I found a place to do color correcting, Cquartz finest ceramic coating (he will coat the black Berlina rims for $50 ea), and clear bra. I even found a place that does Ceramic Pro for the Graystone interior. They were booked solid until the first week in May. I only have 150 miles on the sh-sh-awd and don't want to drive it until I get the clear bra/ceramic coating done.

I'm interested how this compares to Opti-Coat, which I had applied to my Infiniti (although that was 8 years ago now). I'll inquire to see how much it costs. I know in general you have to detail the car fully so the paint is flawless before applying the ceramic coating, and the application process can be tricky, all of which goes into why it's expensive to have done. With my MDX being new I should look at having this done and hopefully he can touch up some light swirls i see on the rear passenger door.

I had the clear "bra" applied to the front hood, bumper, side mirrors, a-pilar and in front of moon roof, door cups, door edges and top of rear bumper as well as had the front windows tinted and an eyebrow tint at the top of the windshield right after i purchased the vehicle in October

my detailer friend doesn’t recommend doing the interior. He says it doesn’t last very long on the seats with constant sliding getting in/out. So might want to spend that money on seat covers??

The installer said it has a 3 year warranty; but, I would have to re-do the front driver seat for $30 every year since that get used the most. I'm worried about the graystone longterm because I've seen Acura parchment driver seat discolored after a few months. My graystone in my 2006 TSX has held up very well after +13 years and +155,000 miles; but, that is the cheaper plastic leather.

someone posted pics of his graystone in the mdx Facebook group and the seats were stained by suntan lotion. So be extra careful this summer if you have kids

I guess we do not know if there will be a desire/need to replace the batteries after 4-7 years of usage, especially if you want to maintain high performance from the motors.
I believe all lithium batteries loose capacity after many cycles of charge / discharge and I doubt that Acura will want to replace the batteries as the vehicle approaches 8 years of ownership.
