Mine seem to be pretty warped. On the highway, using the brakes shakes the front end violently. Is this a known issue? Are brake rotors under designed on this car?

Thanks for your reply. I went into the dealer and they told me the factory rotors and pads have issues. Acura's policy is to replace the pads and discs under warranty. My vehicle has 32,000 km on it so brake pads were pretty worn. Acura changed everything for free. They said If I paid it would have cost me $1,200. This warranty is only for fussy drivers so they don't promote it just in case you are not fussy.

And oh, did I mention that Acura is awesome!

Update: I had quite a bit of brake pad left. 80% at the previous service. But my rotors were warped.

Your MDX reads as an "Elite" are you in canada or US. I have an advanced and i don't have these issues, just wondering in case in happens. Thank you.

Brake pads/rotors are consumable items, there are many factors that can lead to premature warping of rotors including driving habits, temperature or just bad rotors to begin with. Luckily for OP, his fell into the latter category. Did the dealer mention a TSB number ?

No TSB. Just that it is a know issue. They were very quick to diagnose and replace. As I mentioned earlier, old pads were at 80% roughly as per the previous service. So I am easy on pads.

I've had issues with the OE rotors warping on every Honda/Acura product I've owned (5 and counting). I've always gone with aftermarket rotors as soon as they factory rotors were due for replacement. I've never had an issue with the aftermarket rotors.

just to add to this issue, I also agree that the honda products we own also have had history of brake rotors warping / uneven wear. This happened with my wife'es 2009 accord where it was replaced under a TSB I believe. And now I have our 2014 MDX SH-AWD rear rotors resurfaced at 54k miles. apparently it was done at 47k miles just end of last year! symptom was car shaking when braking at speed on the freeway but no steering wheel vibration or shaking. I at least got another free resurface and will look to replace it when it goes bad again!

Resurface a rotor involves removing metal materials from the rotor surface, thereby reducing the thickness of the resurfaced rotor. The now thinner and lighter rotor will warp again even easier. The best solution is to buy new rotors.

I given up arguing with the dealer on this.. only acura dealers I had issues with.. i order power stop set.. havn't put it on yet.. soon.

very known issue. Acura changed the part number about 12 - 16 months ago. Most likely a new supplier.

My 17 RDX rotors were replaced under warranty after one year. My 14 RDX has no issues.

This has been an issue even with my 06 TSX and 08 RDX. Many folks concluded it was the OEM pad leaving uneven deposits on the OEM rotor causing high/low spots that feel like warped rotors when braking. It can take as little at 10,000 miles or +70,000 miles depending on driving habits (mostly city, mostly hwy, or combo) and braking technique (aggressive to light brake use). A lot of folks just change to aftermarket pads and that reduces and/or solves the issue. Sometime new aftermarket rotors+OEM pads can fix the issue depending on the type of rotors. Switching out pads and rotors to aftermarket can eliminate the issue 100%. I switched out my rotors and pads on my 11 MDX to Racing brake slotted/cross drilled rotors and Carbotech 1521 pads at 32,000 miles and haven't had to turn the rotors with +137,000 miles and second set of F/R pads.

I haven't seen a lot of aftermarket replacement rotor choices for the +17 hybrid since it has a larger front rotor compared to the 3.5L MDX. Don't know if the hybrid uses and different pad and caliper with the larger rotor?

My 12 Advance will be on its 3rd set of rotors in 12 months. Warped rotors, I even replaced brake calipers, pads, fluid everything. Ordered drilled slotted to see if it makes a difference. Braking vibration is horrendous and dangerously scary.

Slotted rotors cannot be machined if warped.

mine were warped. I took them out on a back road and ran thru a series of high speed stops to get them hot and put an even coating on them. They got better when hot but it returned as soon as they cooled. Run out gauge showed run out. Dealer fixed it under warranty by turning the rotors on the car. Before we were to leave on vacation I replaced them and the pads. Part number is a superseded number and the issue has not returned. There are things I have learned help warp rotors - uneven torque on the lug nuts, and washing the car when the rotors are hot.

well, just an update as this one day service turned into 4 days and counting. They first determined the rear rotors were an issue again and resurfaced it for free. then heir tech was diligent enough to say that the resurfacing did not solve the issue. Interestingly enough, they still concluded it to be the rotors and ordered a new set of rotors that are not stock in the acura dealership?!? and will find out tomorrow what they say... i assume it will need new pads too or i dont really know if pads can be serviced...
