I have been planning to purchase a new car and suddenly have an opportunity to purchase a good friend's loaded '14 MDX. He drives a ton of road miles and has almost 120,000 miles on it. It is predominately road miles. It has not been in an accident and he is fanatical about all his maintenance and has already done the timing belt. It is AWD and is going to be priced right. I have experience with higher mileage Toyota and Lexus products but don't know what I can expect from this vehicle. I would appreciate any cautious advise you can offer and tell me what I might expect. Thanks in advance.

How many miles do you plan to put per year? It is around 120K when you need new tires, OEM battery fails, need brakes, shocks/struts/suspension wear, need a new serpentine belt, alternator issues, or A/C compressor/clutch start to give issues. It might work out if you put 10,000-12,000 per year and you get great deal on the price. The 105,000 mile service is the expensive one with (water pump, spark plugs, timing belt, anti-freeze, serpentine belt, valve adjustment). It will just be fluid changes, air/cabin filters, and tire rotations/balance until the next timing belt change. The issues you will run into after that are normal wear/tear items that are usually one-and-done fixes like the battery, alternator, or door actuators.

Fixes for my Acuras after 100,000 miles other than M.I.D. maint of tires, brakes, filters, wipers, or fluids:
06 TSX +145,000 miles: alternator, battery, power steering pump, passenger sun-visor clip, A/C compressor
08 RDX +151,000 miles: alternator, battery, 4 coil packs, front passenger 5AT seal, replaced struts/shocks (lowered on Eibach springs since 30K)
11 MDX +115,000 miles: rear magnetic shocks (covered under Acura Care)

Check BlueBook value, see what's been maintenced and what needs to be, check interior/exterior condition and make your decision from there.

Me personally I prefer to purchase new or low mileage cars for the fact that I will need to do little to no maintenance over a 3-5 year period. I live in Southern CA and drive roughly 20k a year so its just piece of mind for me. Everybody has their own agenda for car purchases so do whats best for you.

my '12 MDX just passed 100k. about to put on new rotors, pads, brake fluid, just replaced power steering fluid and o-ring, ad engine / cabin filter. Not as bad if you can do it yourself. I'm basically doing $1000 work of dealer maintenance for $250. We just had transmission fluid and filter changed as per TSB and made a world of difference. I will also be doing rear differential fluid as well. Take care of the vehicle and it will take care of you.
