First road trip in 2018 MDX Advance

Thanks to all that assured me of this vehicles features prior to leaving for San Clemente from the Bay area. 419 miles one way.
Once on I-5 I mastered the Adaptive cruise control/LKAS etc.... worked very well
Sound system did its job. AC worked well
Only complaint was the 20 inch tires on bad pavement on I-5 (mostly right truck lane)…. Neither Sport, Comfort or Normal handled it well …. What size tire/rim does it come with without these upgraded 20 blings ? It was very ruff and LKAS was having a tough time on bad pavements. PSI is at 35 per door jam stickers. What kind of struts come with this vehicle?
Seats were comfy the entire trip, no rattles in cabin …. Once I exceeded 600 mile break in (left house with 420 miles on the ODO) it was time to test out the WOT..... Plenty of power!!!!! ZF9 worked as intended.... its fine with me... Saw several 2nd gen MDX's but no new ones.... On the return trip there were several headed South. I had to wash and detail her from all the highway bugs and some sand from the beach. I would do that trip again in a heart beat.... !

How was your combined mpgs compared to your 07 MDX for the same trip? I wonder if the stiff ride could just be part of the strut/shock break-in also? My 06 TSX ride was very stiff when I switched from OEM struts/shocks to the A-Spec suspension at 30,000 miles. I thought I made a mistake and considered switching back to the regular suspension. It took about +500 miles before it started to smooth out to feel like the original suspension in normal driving.

SF - San Clemente got to be one of the best scenic drives in America! We've took our Sport Hybrid on a couple of roadtrips now. LA-Monterrey Bay and LA-San Diego.
All perfectly comfortable, no complaints at all. We have the Hybrid, so our suspension is Adaptive and have different DCT 7-Speed. 321HP, plenty of power for highway passing.
I don't like LKAS as much. It tends to bounce the car side to side too much within the lane. I can do my own steering just fine. Adaptive Cruise is nice for long road trips and stop n go traffic situations.
If you think newer MDX are hard to come by, Sport Hybrid Tech Pkg is even rarer. We have not seen a single one in Los Angeles area for the last year. Too bad Acura don't make more of the Sport Hybrid Tech.
Advance models are everywhere, but IMO Tech is the better deal, especially Sport Hybrid Tech.

I got 26.7 mpg averaging 75-78 miles per hour on 2018 MDX... impressive.... 07 MDX has Adaptive suspension.... honestly no comparo to the 2018 Advance model... two different animals... I don't like the 20" upgraded tires certainly compared to my 07 MDX sport.... it has 17" wider tires and its smooth over bumps or bad surface compared to my 2018 MDX....

My 07 MDX only averages about 18 mpg on hwy...however, when I drove it to Louisiana from California, them minute I got out of California and put higher octane gas, it jumped to a whopping 26.x mpg for the remainder of the trip both ways loaded with luggage, dogs and a bunch of goodies from Louisiana (food and what not)….once we crossed over and filled up with 91 oct in California, the mpg dropped back to 18 mpg.... It ran like a beast on the higher octane gas....

I am glad you had a great road trip! One option is to go down to the OEM 18in wheels and tires that come with the Base model.

I have a 2019 MDX Advanced, and I bought the OEM 18in wheels that come on the base model. I put a set of winter tires on them, and they are on my MDX now.

HTH

Have you driven a 17 or 16 advance? Is the 9 speed smoother in the 19? Also do the active dampers make a big difference?

Also how does the navigation work? Can you use it right away after starting up or does it take forever to locate on GPS?

Have you used the traffic rerouting feature, and does it automatically prompt you with a faster route?

Lastly where did you purchase a set of 18s, were they new or used and how much did you pay?

I plan on buying a 19 Advance with Entertainment myself shortly so sorry for all the questions lol, haven't seen anyone else yet with a 19 Advance

I also have a 2014 Acura MDX......

Yes I drove the 2017, right before I drove the 2019. The adaptive suspension on the 2019 is awesome, there is no comparison between the two in Comfort mode. I have not tried the other modes yet, so I can't speak about those. The ride is extremely composed, and it takes the imperfections of the road much much better than the 2017 (and the 2014 for that matter). Also the 9 speed is much smoother taking off (starts in 2nd gear), as well as upshifting and downshifting while driving. It has behaved flawlessly for the 1,100 miles I have on it, even in stop and go traffic. The 2017 shifted much worse, compared to this one.

The navigation has not lost GPS signal, but I have not used it yet. I have the top screen on Nav, and it has tracked the car without interruption. I have been using Waze, but that has lost GPS a couple of time for about 10-20 sec and then it snaps back. That is using an iPhone X....... I see the factory GPS tracking right away, as soon as I start the car.

I have not used traffic rerouting, since I have not used the GPS yet (and I probably won't use it).

FYI the 2019 MDX SH-AWD Advanced, comes with 20x8.5J wheels - 265/45/20 tires.

The wheels for the Base 2019 MDX, are 18x8J, and you will also need theTPMS sensors, and the aluminum center wheel cap for each one.

I bought them from Bernardi online: https://acura.bernardiparts.com

$382 a wheel, plus TMPS sensors, and center caps. Below is a copy of my cart, when I purchased them last week:

I hope I answered all your questions. If I were you, I would most definitely test drive the 2017, and the 2019, so you can be sure.......

Thanks for all your feedback! In terms of modes, what modes does the 19 Advance have? Does it have an additional mode like the sport hybrid due to the active dampers?

With the auto stop/start system on the 17 and 18 when you pull into your garage and stop it would turn off the engine. Then after you put it in park it start the engine again forcing you to turn it off. Did they change this at all for 2019? After putting it in park it would make more sense to keep the engine off rather than turning it back on again.

For wheels the stock 20's look awesome on the 19 Advance, if I bought 18's it would be for winter only. Would be awesome if I could find a used set or something. Since the wheels are wider than the 20's on the 18 or 17 does that make road noise or bumps any worse compared to the 17?

Just the 3 modes. Sport+ is only on the Sport Hybrid.

It is still the same, but it starts much smoother in the 2019. I just don't press on the brake pedal too hard when I'm parking in the garage, and that way it does not turn off....

No more road noise from my personal experience. The MDX is very quiet in Comfort mode.....

What color did you get, do you have any pictures you'd like to share? Also curious if you got the oem trailer hitch?

What going to be the next road trip? I added roof rails, cargo box, hitch box, and trailer hitch for bike rack to my 11 MDX and used them for ski, beach, hiking, and mountain biking trips

Active dampers were a new addition for 2019 to the non-hybrid Advance models. Prior to 2019 it was only available on Sport Hybrid (any trim lvl I believe)

Nice, I'm going to get a white one too, except am going with Ebony interior instead (although I like the look of the Parchment, especially the new wood color this year). I've never owned a white car before but that color really pops on the mdx
