Finding navigation points of interest along route

I just traded in my 2010 mdx for a 2019 mdx hybrid, which has been awesome so far. However, I'm still having the same issue I also had in my 2010 mdx. When I search for restaurants (or any POI) along the route, it organizes them by distance, which is to be expected. However, it includes locations that I've already passed, and 99.9% of the time the last thing I want to do on a trip is turn around and back track to go to a restaurant or gas station. So far, I can't find a setting that filters only the POI along the route ahead of me. Does anyone know if such setting exists that removes the locations I've already passed?

Use waypoints

I have a 2015 MDX and according to the manual if you are following a route the best way to handle what you want to do is to add a "waypoint" to your route. It will search along a set distance from your route to find the type of place you are looking for. I know a lot of people don't like to read the manual but I have found it very helpful. There are usually several ways to get information and unfortunately it isn't always logical how to do it. The other feature I found from reading the manual is that if you are following a route and on the freeway you can get information about the restaurants and gas stations at each of the upcoming exits along your route. I wish I would have known about that before we took our last road trip. I believe you press the enter button, then directions then exit info, at least that is the sequence on my 2015. Again check your manual for exit information. You do need to be following a route for this to work.
There are some things I really like about the navigation system and some I really don't. It doesn't really seem to handle traffic congestion very well and several times it told me to get on a closed road.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll have to try them out, but I'm not so sure they'll fully solve my dilemma...although, they may be better than nothing if there's no official setting for what I'm trying to do. I still miss my '06 Accord that had similar navigation software. If I was following a destination I programmed in, anything I searched (gas stations, restaurants, etc...) only showed up along the route ahead of me.
