Extended Warranty
Hello All, long time lurker but my first post here :). I just picked up a used 2017 MDX base and the dealership sold me extended warranty by Protective Asset protection. I'm debating on cancelling it but thought I'd ask here first. Anyone know if this is just a rip off or is it necessary for the model/year?

There are several dealers online that sell it at a discounted price (unless you're in FL - then you're stuck with buying from the dealer). My favorite is Saccucci Honda although others swear by Curry https://www.saccuccihondacare.com/vehicle_info.php https://www.curryacuracare.com Once purchased, you'll get the paperwork in the mail from Acura. It'll be in the Acura system when you go to the dealership for warranty issues. If you get the $0 deductible, then it'll be handled just like any other warranty work. |
Thank you! Wow! I wasn't aware I could purchase directly from Acura. I appreciate the quick response!

That said, you really to decide if you really want/need an extended warranty. My wife came close to breaking even with the 6 year 120k warranty on her 2013 Civic. The warranty paid for a bluetooth module and an oil leak. The dealer gave us estimates before they realized we had the warranty (I guess our dealer didn't have lots of Honda Care plans in use) so we know that the costs are roughly the same as the cost of the warranty. I haven't needed to use the warranty in 75k miles on my TSX wagon yet. |
Keep in mind that the Acura factory warranty is 6 years/70K miles on the whole powertrain and 8 years/80K miles on many emissions related components.
As an example, if you purchase a 8 year/100K mile extended plan, you are paying for only 2 years and 30K miles for powertrain coverage. |
You still have until the Basic 4yr/50,000 mile basic warranty expires and you can still purchase Acura Care. The time clock starts on the purchase/lease date from the original owner. I purchased my 11 MDX used in 2014 with 30k; but, it was leased starting in Jan/11 from the original owner. I had until Jan/2015 (11 months) to decide on Acura Care and I purchased in Nov/14 the 8yr/120k policy online for $2390 after my front magnetic struts went out a few months earlier (repairs covered by basic warranty). I purchased out of state on-line and that saved me some $$$ on sales tax compared to buying local from a New Mexico dealership (Acura of Peoria, AZ).
I would wait until your are close to the 4/50 is ready to expire before deciding. By then, the 4th Gen MDX will be out and you might decide to jump ship and use the money as part of the down payment. |
You can get quotes for the acura care, as the car gets towards factory warranty expiring, the cost of acura care goes up. I bought my car and acura care from curry.. still the same low price but even curry does a lot of bait and switch when I bought my car.. left a bad taste.
I had ac on my 05 tsx and after 90k, I had the ac issue, bearings, and even the navigation went out, was looking at a 5-6k bill for those items. Good thing for acura care. |
