Lightbulb Calling all 2014 MDX Tech/Adv Owners...

As you may know, for 2015 Acura released a major software upgrade that includes highly desirable functional and usability enhancements for Audio, Nav and Phone capabilities. This is not currently available for 2014 vehicles. (See https://acurazine.com/forums/3g-mdx-...2015-a-921565/ for background)

I have a 2015 TLX Tech SH-AWD as well as a 2014 MDX Tech SH-AWD and I can tell you the software in the TLX is significantly improved. All the little (and some not-so-little) nits that have grown to really annoy me in the MDX have been addressed.

I called Acura customer service last night, and they made it clear that if enough of us do it, Acura may see the benefit in backporting the upgrade to the 2014 systems.

So make your voice heard, and we can all benefit!!! Thanks!!!

AS I mentioned previously, I think they are feeding you bad information. The 2015 TLX and 2015 MDX have the same control module, not the case in the 2014 MDX. It is my understanding that for Acura to fix the 2014, they have to pre-load new software into the control module, and then literally SWAP THEM OUT, to make this work, not able to do a software update by inserting a disk, lack of RAM and the CPU is also improved.. This conversation and the differences in the hardware used in the computer is complicated and the software writers understood the issues at hand, plus they, Acura, can only do this if the DEALERS can get this accomplished with minor intervention or time spent on doing so, cant do something that keeps your car at the dealers all day or overnight, not practical for something that is free. . You notice the RLX is not talked about, can't do it on those either. The RLX with AWD-Electric Sport, will get the new computer and all the enhancements that go along with software upgrades.. I HOPE I AM WRONG and Acura will and can do something for 2014 MDX owners, but from what I have learned, probably not. As an example, I have a IPD 4, and iPad Air! I also have a NetGear R7000 router that has the super fast 802.11 AC capabilities. My 6 month old iPad Air does not support AC capabilities but the new iPad Air II DOES.. Without hardware changes the IPad air can not support AC, just the way it is. Acura has to deal with similar things, iPad Air is a NEW model, one year old, but 12 months later the Air II surpasses its capabilities, Cars are the same way, you should not expect no updates to a car during its 6 year life cycle. My Wife's 2009 TSX has a 6 CD changer, the 2010 TSX has a Hard Drive and improved Navigation system and display

You make some good points. I certainly would find that disappointing if it proves out that you are correct. ;-)

How are you liking your TLX? I traded in my 2010 TL, for the 2015 MDX.. I needed the space capacity for large boxes I haul off to FedEx when I sell stereo equipment and speakers on eBay. Had a 2004 Honda Pilot, but gave that to my daughter as a wedding gift, so we went from 3 cars, TL,TSX, Pilot down to a 2009 TSX and 2015 MDX...

Can someone check out what are the factory part numbers for the "On Demand Module Display" units on both the 2014 and the 2015 MDX's ?

We absolutely LOVE it. Put the 19" wheels and Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 3 tires on it and it handles better than my 07 TL Type S, yet so much more sumptuous. It totally rocks.

The upgraded a group of 2015 MDXs and TLXs which I guess got the old SW out of the chute.... Here is what one guy reported on the TLX forum:

I had the software upgrade installed. I was at the dealer for about two hours and was able to leave with about 30% of the upgrade downloaded. The remaining 70% ran in the background to completion, as your vehicle is driven. The time that takes is dependent on how often you drive. It took me another couple of days to complete. The navigation screen shows the percentage of download remaining.
So that seems to contradict your assumption about how it works.

The software in the background is for the Maps to load. On my 2010 TL, the maps load in the background but the DISK must remain in the CD slot till it is over. When it is over, I eject the CD and keep it since maps update are $149.00.. On the 2015 MDX and 2015 TLX for this free upgrade it appears the RAM size is now large enough to store the data while it is being updated to the data base. No one has said they leave the CD in your 2015 MDX or TLX while it updates and than you bring it back to them, or you are left with a CD?? I can't see Acura leaving a customer with a CD that could be Cloned and then sold on eBay or whatever. In the new 2014 RLX Sports, it will get the new control module as will the standard 2015 RLX. Strange the decided to make the 2014 RLX the new Sports version with Electric Rear Wheel Motors rather then do it on the 2015? My Guess is that Acura had a TON of parts available for the 2014 year and just made them into Sports so they could move more of the $2014's. The Sports with Electric rear wheel motors is like $65K... So far the reviews are Phenominal, may test drive one when I take my MDX in for its first oil change next year. Raining in SUNNY Southern Ca. but we need the rain!

Poster on MDXers forum says he has been told update for 2014 software is in the works:

"I just wanted everyone to know that I received a call from an Acura representative after I complained via sending them a letter regarding the updates. I was informed that there is an update in the making that will be applied to the 2014. It should be released sometime in Spring of 2015. We'll see !"

Try using the Pilot Super Sport summer tires, and the resulting car will handle even better than anything Acura has ever put out, other than the NSX of course.

I sure hope so. I test drove the new TLX which left me asking the very same question to my dealer if there was a software update for the 2014 MDX. I love how they improved the Nav voice commands to accept the entire address and show it recognizing each piece of the address as you speak.

yeah mdx software just sucks period. Acura has been lacking in the tech area for awhile. Crazy how cars like Hyndai or even Domestic are better at this.
