400-HP MDX Sport Hybrid To Race Up Pikes Peak

https://www.motor1.com/news/355660/a...lt-400-hp-mdx/

Honestly, I think I'd rather this setup than the 3.0T in the future Type-S.

As you might imagine, this particular MDX Sport Hybrid isn’t a stock production machine. Engineers ditch the smaller 3.0-liter V6 engine used in the hybrid, which is replaced by the larger 3.5-liter V6 from the standard MDX. That mill is then punched up to 3.7-liters and connected to the hybrid’s three-electric motors – one in front and one for each rear axle – with the result being 400 horsepower (298 kilowatts) and 350 pound-feet (475 Newton-meters) of torque. Shifting duties are handled by a seven-speed DCT, sending that power to all four wheels through Acura’s SH-AWD system.

It's for pikes peak , not for consumers.

Yeah, I know. If Acura asked me which powertrain I would like to see on the future MDX Type-S, I would choose the 400HP SH-SH-AWD over the upcoming 3.0T.

Acuras 3.0 liter with 3 hybrid motors needs to be standard on the MDX and TLX. With the power it produces its a great combo without needing turbos. The 7 speed dual clutch just needs to be reprogrammed for faster shifts. All in all I love how my MDX hybrid performs.

There's talk of the next generation of Acura models getting a 48V mild hybrid system. Whether this electric motor is going to be wed to the 2.0T or 3.0T, or both, I don't know. Maybe we'll see the non-Type-S models getting a 2.0T/48V combo and the Type-S models getting the 3.0T/48V.

I'm impressed with the power delivery of my sh-sh-awd compared to my 11 MDX 3.7L. The electric motors work just like my turbo in my 08 RDX at 5000-7500 feet; but, with the added bonus of power off the line with zero lag. So far, I haven't felt the drop in hwy passing power at +75 mph in my hybrid compared to my 11 MDX at altitude. My 11 MDX can make more VTEC noise than power at those speeds/altitudes. I was really worried the NA 3.0L would run out of steam at 75-85 mph when the electric motors couldn't help as much. I don't think I would go for an MDX with the 2.0T because it looks like the 19 RDX is only returning the same and sometime worse mpgs as the current 3.5L engine.
