2017 MDX, the ZF and Tranny Cooler: an epilogue and happy ending

So by now the regulars here know of my outright disgust with the 9 speed ZF transmission on my 2017 MDX AWD Tech. From the start, shifts have been balky and the transmission has "clunked" badly when (seemingly) the dog clutch would engage around the 4th to 5th shift. As it turned out, Acura is well aware of the issue and since, in their analysis, the transmission was still operating as designed there was/is no fix planned. The issue is so pronounced that it has ruined the driving experience for me and the family. I had had my unit in three times looking for options and finally was left with removal of the cooler bringing it back to stock. To my dealer and Acura's credit, they paid for the revision and at my request agreed to pay me back for the original purchase and install of the cooler (all of this possible because my boat/motor/trailer weigh 2300lbs which is well under the 3500lb towing limit).

Well, I picked up my MDX two days ago and I can happily report it is a completely different driving experience! Not only is the clunking gone, but shifts are more sure and crisp. It would seem the transmission is functioning as designed and was not able to with the cooler for some reason. Now I recognize my situation is n=1, but based on it, I would never, EVER have this vehicle with the cooler.

Credit to Acura and my dealer for taking care of this and making it as it should be. The only thing I'd add is since they know this is an issue, they should warn potential buyers of the "compromise" they must make if a true 5000lb capacity is required.

Vindication at last! See the ZF fan boys didn't have it so wrong after all, its a decent transmission.

I think your greatest contribution here is that getting the cooler is a very bad idea and for that I thank you. I considered adding one for max towing but as I stated in the other thread I've now decided the MDX is NOT a tow rig, 3500lbs is more than I would ever put behind it.

Cool. I'm still waiting for your greatest contribution. I'm 94, so hurry.

I thought you were just bitter about the transmission... But then you make this rude comment. Are you really just a complete dick?
