2017+ MDX Vs the rest

So have almost 5k miles on our X and needless to say quite happy with our new purchase. Would like to reflect on last year when we ditched our BMW 328i in favor of our X and how other 3-row SUVs compared when we were "in the market".

Our requirements were (still are, we are a small family but have frequent visits from our family abroad):
3 rows of seats
$45K tops (after TTL): Hey gotta stick to a budget which means - Bye Germans!!
Stylish looking (this ruled out the Pilot and Highlander - Boxes on wheels anyone?), ~300 HP and great handling were foremost. We didn’t want a minibus in terms of styling and driving dynamics mainly because it would be my primary vehicle and I am seduced by sleek lines
Also I did not want a Supercharged/Turbocharged engine for fear of long term costs.
Regular gas drinking (but this was not set in stone).
Great AWD system (this ruled out the Mazda CX9's and Hyundai Santa Fe) to conquer the Dalton Highway (on my bucket list).
Good or Acceptable headlights according to IIHS 2017 list: Most midsize SUV headlights are marginal or poor.
Surprisingly most people don't test drive at night or don't care/know/give importance to this criteria.
No CVT please ! We had a 2014 Forester before as well as were sick of the rubbery effect - this ruled out the QX60/Pathfinder. Although the 17 MDX transmission is not great its better than the 2014-2016 and is a regular 9-speed.
No Germans please !! (cost, maintenance, resale) - Are you kidding me? This rules out the Audi Q7, BMW X5 and MB.
We looked at the new VW Tiguan (it had just been released) but it was similar in many aspects to our 2014 Forester. The Atlas would have been too big to fit in our garage with the tail gate opened. We had pre-measured our garage as we like to garage our cars - rather than store junk in it.
I also test drove the 2017 Volvo XC90 but the reliability bothered me: https://www.consumerreports.org/car-...reliable-cars/

Our final two choices were: 2018 Kia Sorento and the 2017 MDX.

The Sorento also had 3 rows but in the end the Kia dealer was on his high horse price and couldn't provide a SUV in the color and trim we wanted - SX AWD. Found that MDX dealers in Dallas were quoting $2k or more less than the Houston ones, so it was a Dallas purchase. The quotes prices were almost the same for a 2017 MDX AWD Base and the 2018 Sorento, also the Acura brand has more swag (for what its worth) than the Kia badge.

Since you can get away with regular gas on the MDX, we bought new as the 2017 is vastly different in outside styling and we have the peace of a 4 yr warranty. Saw no need for a used one.

Please post your pre-purchase thoughts as well !

Our top two on the list were MDX and RX, we ended up with the MDX SHAWD tech. As far as Germans we really liked the Q7, drives and handle well. But, we wanted to purchase not lease. Almost 3months of ownership with 2500 miles, wife is happy. With the new redesign of 2019 RDX we might consider within the next few years. One thing I regret, wish we would have bought the Hybrid but the deal weren’t so good at the time of purchase.

To add but the RX 350 was never in the running due to the outside design choices Lexus made recently. Cow catcher grill anyone???

I am always recommending the Sorento SXL to people on here as a great alternative to the MDX actually so I find it very funny that you considered both of them as your final choices. I think the MDX has the performance and styling/badge advantage but the Sorento has the quality advantage in my opinion. The 2018 Sorento just got a new 8 speed so I’m anxious to see what the perfomance will be like and Kia just greenlighted the telluride concept which I really really like. But on the other hand if the RDX prototype is any hint then the next generation MDX is going to be insane.

If you said “no Germans” then why did you consider the VW?

Since VW has a 7-yr BTB warranty on the Atlas and Tiguans. Also they drink regular gas.

meh I’d rather not “need” a warranty than buy something that will likely spend tons of time in the shop.

and I do not understand the obsession with regular vs premium — especially not people who insist on using regular in the MDX when premium is recommended.

Not sure why you think I put regular gas. Just because it can work on regular doesn’t mean we don’t put premium. It may be a criteria for some folks, who are you to comment ?
As the OP says, post your pre-purchase thinking not your ramblings!!

I finally closed on 2019 MDX Tech SH-AWD, Modern Steel Metallic/Ebony. - I wanted to get 2019 Hybrid TECH, but there was only one in stock in the Seattle area and that dealer quoted around 47500

MSRP : $53,295
Sale price: $42,750 (includes weather mats).
Accessories :
Roof rails - 1100 (pre installed by dealer)
Hitch - 600 , front window tint 300
Dealer wouldn't budge on reducing these prices , so kinda of got a bad deal with accessories.

Sales tax is 10% in Seattle area, i have an old car that i traded that offset some taxes.
Above pricing was contingent on financing through Acura - I went with Acura financing for 3.29/66 months.

I typically know the service contracts are a ripoff - But wanted to see if anyone have any comments on the below quote.

Zurich - 10 years /125K miles for 2500 - the dealer i was working with said he would recommend Zurich as they feel its is superior and flexible than Acuracare. like going to any authorized repair shop etc..

Acura care - 8 years/120k miles for 2280

Anyone has any feedback on which service contract to go with ?? I plan to keep the car for about 10-12 years and dont want to deal with car problems after the initial 4 year cycle.

We've had the Zurich contract thru our local Acura dealer and had good luck with claims. The dealer prefers working with Zurich and finds they're more flexible with coverage. We had the coverage on the wife's '12 TL SH-AWD and had a couple of claims that were done quickly and painlessly. We also augmented the CPO warranty with a Zurich add-on for the wife's new RLX SH that goes out for 10 years and 125k miles. That's one car I don't want to pay anything on for any problems that arise. :-)

I always liked Acura vehicles after the MMC because they are usually more reliable, updated styling, updated tech, and issues are close to being resolved from previous models. I really like the fact Acura doesn't make a lot of updates after the MMC. Other than CarPlay, electronic dampers on Adv, and PMC cover most updates post MMC.

I was leaning towards a used 15 MDX Adv sh-awd as my first choice. Considering the yearly sales, it is very hard to find an used low miles MDX without traveling 1-3 states away. Just easier to purchase new exactly what you want and take advantage of lower interest rates, accessories, and discounts.

Purchased a 2020 MDX SH-AWD with Advance and Entertaninment package Gunmetal Metallic/ebony

MSRP: $61,145
Discount: 7,750.00
Loyalty discount: 1,000
Sale price: $52,395 + TTL/taxes

They did ask me to finance with Acura Financial -- so we financed the required minimum of $6000 for 24 months at 4.69%. They asked to keep the loan opened for 90 days.
