2017 MDX Sport Hybrid- B16 service - how to do rear diff?

Hi,

I have been driving this new 2017 Mdx hybrid since November 2018..(yes, a new 2017 I bought in November of 2018) 400 miles on it.
It is begging me for a B16 service. I have been looking around for instruction on the rear diff oil change but could not find anything on the net. Any pointers would be greatly appreciated!
I just hate to bring the car in for some simple as oil changes.

Thank you!
Dean

I can tell you what the owners manual says, it uses the same ATF as the dual clutch transmission, Acura ATF DW-1, and the capacity is 2.56qt. I'm about to have mine done at the dealer in 2 weeks.

Thank you! ATF ordered... Anyone know where the fill plug is? I only found the drain plug.

I could have sworn I saw somewhere that it's changed just like an ordinary diff with fill (somewhere on the driver side front?, can't remember but it does say "ATF" next to it) and drain plugs (on the bottom) but I can't seem to find the info anywhere anymore. And nobody seems to have taken a pic of the TMU yet either. I guess not a lot of hybrid owners crawl under there lol (except you)

Here you go, I pulled these from techinfo, so these are the 2017 factory Acura manual procedures for the rear diff of the MDX. Extremely easy to do, make 100% sure your using the fluid they say to use.

How to inspect the rear diff fluid:

How to change the fluid for the rear diff:

Thank you for the diagram! Really appreciate it. But I think hybrid twin motor rear diff is somewhat different. See the pic I took today. The drain plug is in the back of the car. I could not see the fill plug. (Could be on the other side) I will go under the car tomorrow to find it. Thanks!

Twin motor rear diff... seems the drain hole is in the back.

Be careful out there! The differential is not the same as a Twin Motor Unit. The hybrid manuals are very specific and never use the word 'differential', it's always TMU, Twin Motor Unit. It is a different part, different fluids, very important to understand. IMHO

Gerb, Yes, it is not really a differential in the conventional sense. I have found the fill hole. It is directly above the drain hole. You cannot see it because it is block by the cross memeber. See pics. I am waiting for ATF DW-1 as you mentioned. 4 qrts from Amazon should be here by the weekend.

Ahh thank you for the pics! This will help many many folks in the future.

Ok so one thing you might want to also get from Amazon is a bottle fluid transfer pump like so:
Amazon Amazon

And then you see how the subframe has a big hole directly above the jack point between the two TMU mount bolts? If that hole is roughly in the same area as that fill hole, routing the transfer pump hose through there into the fill hole to fill is what I've found to be easiest on another of my cars that is laid out the same way.

Can you pull the SPORT HYBRID TMU fluid replacement from techinfo as well? Thanks!

Thanks for the link! I already have that pump. Been doing this for my former 2001 MDX...for 17 years.
The fill hole is just below the center hole on the subframe you mentioned. But there is ample space to insert the tube.
I'll post a youtube link after I am done.

Thanks guys!

Ok, just finished the TMU fluid change. Sorry, no video. This is the same straightforward procedure for VTM4 and other rear diffs in various Honda/Acura vehicles. Drain hole and fill hole position may vary. Hope this will help DIYers!

Use Acura ATF DW-1, 1/4 wrench, fluid pump and a hammer to loosen the drain plug.

Remove drain bolt

Taking a leak

Install and tighten drain plug. Remove fill plug on the top.

Run hose through the subframe into the fill hole.

Insert hose into fill hole.

Start pumping! It took about 2.75 qt. A bit more than the spec.

Stop pumping when fluid is topped off.

Reinstall the fill plug and you are done!
