2017 MDX Hood Woobly while in high speed

Is it me or is the new 17 hood are kind of wobbly while driving in high speed like starting around 50mph. Not sure if I noticed on my 14 MDX but I have noticed the 17 are kind of woobly for some reason. Not sure if anyone noticed that.

Wobbly? Meaning it moves? Mine doesn't flex noticeably at any speed.

Do you mean you see the metal in the hood getting a little wavy, or the whole hood is loose? Mine definitely waves under pressure. Not sure if they are using aluminum or thin steel. My old 5 series did this as well, but it used aluminum

yes exactly. Metal seems kind of fragile as I go on normal high speed and hood gets kind of wavy. Maybe I did not noticed on my other MDX but the 17 does show its very noticeable. Not sure if its the reflection as black color car shows more detail.
Maybe I can ask my friend and see what kind of material they are using on the newer MDX

Most cars have adjustable rubber pegs at the corners of the hood itself or in the front corners of the engine compartment that the hood tensions against when latched. One or both of yours are likely threaded in too far. Should've been adjusted after assembly. Ask dealer to adjust at next service.

The hood on mine is latched tight and doesn't move. It's the actual metal on the hood waving. It's flexing under the pressure. I'm pretty sure that's what the OP was referencing as well

Hi KB1Spec, Did you find a solution to the flutter? I am experience the same problem. Dealer said it is normal especially while cornering, becasue of the shape of the hood and lightweight materials used. I am hoping the are wrong as it is really annoying.

Cheers

Mine does NOT too. I'm going to be on the lookout now to see if it does.

I did talked to one of my friend at Honda HQ and it is quite normal he said for the new design and now they are using lighter material.
The wobbly effects is kind of like you are going over 200 mph and the hood in the middle portion is kind of having a wavy effect but you are not driving 200 mph but like 55 - 70mph.

So its normal from my friend who is the engineer at Honda HQ

Thanks for sharing what you learned. Not what I wanted to hear lol. Mine flutters like a kite at any speed over 80km/h, it is quite distracting because it causes the glare on the windshield to move constantly while driving. The front of the hood lifts up and down like a boat cresting waves and the edge near the windshield vibrates at a high frequency. I guess it is what it is, and shame on me for not pushing the car harder during the test drive. Coming from Gen 1, that was stable as a tank all of its life, I didn't do my due diligence. I will keep telling myself it is a safety feature to remind me to drive slower.

I had a 2014 and I did not notice much vibration or wobbly on the hood but on the 2017 it is very noticeable. Yes at high speed like 80-90 it feels like there's a lot of flexing or wave like movement on the center of the hood.
But from what my friend at Honda said, its normal due to new material. Who knows, maybe the hood we have is light weight aluminum =P

it's noticeable, normally when i'm sitting down i can't see the hood, but if i pull myself up and look at the hood driving over 65mpg, i noticed the hood does wobble a bit.
might be due to the reason that hood is very light and wind pushing it.

Have y'all checked the bump stops for a tight fit underneath the hood? If properly positioned the hood should not move up and down, however the ripple affect due to aerodynamics is normal as previously stated. Thin aluminum does flex...and while it's perceived as "annoying" it's quite ok.

I've seen this a lot in recent clamshell style lightweight hoods. Watched a last gen C-class practically rip off its hood going 90 mph down the 5. And then some of the new Macans get all loosey goosey if you don't slam down that hood correctly. I guess I should look at the pre-2017 hood to see if it does the same. Usually drive at 85 mph but don't notice it wobbling.

Just back from a trip where I hit 110 MPH. I didn't see any hood flex. Everything was stable as a rock.

Regards, Jim

I have a 2018 MDX I do see it flapping / Flutters toward the windshield usually a windy day. I also have a 2021 ILX the glue on the underneath is all separated and I hear a vibrating sound and rattling.

I haven't noticed any shake or ripple movement with my 19 MDX. The posted speed limit is 65-80 mph and I'm usually around 5-8 mph above that. Had my MDX up to 110-120 mph passing several 18 wheelers in a row in Nevada on 2 lane hwy (between Reno and Las Vegas run).

I've accidently knock off my upper hood stops a few times wiping down the engine bay and under the hood after an exterior wash:
