Car and Driver just posted a instrumented test of the 2016 MDX 9AT AWD:
2016 Acura MDX 9-Speed Automatic Test ? Review ? Car and Driver
For me, the most interesting thing that I wanted to know is if the 9AT able to extract better performance out of the 290hp J35 compared to the 6AT.
Based on C/D's test, it seems like the 9AT improves performance. Here are some stats:
2016 MDX:
Zero to 60 mph: 5.9 sec
Zero to 100 mph: 16.4 sec
Rolling start, 5-60 mph: 6.2 sec
Top gear, 30-50 mph: 3.5 sec
Top gear, 50-70 mph: 4.6 sec
Standing ¼-mile: 14.6 sec @ 95 mph
2014 MDX:
Zero to 60 mph: 6.4 sec
Zero to 100 mph: 17.1 sec
Rolling start, 5-60 mph: 6.7 sec
Standing ¼-mile: 14.9 sec @ 95 mph
And here's 2014 X5 35i AWD:
Zero to 60 mph: 6.0 sec
Zero to 100 mph: 15.9 sec
Rolling start, 5-60 mph: 7.0 sec
Top gear, 30-50 mph: 3.4 sec
Top gear, 50-70 mph: 4.6 sec
Standing ¼-mile: 14.6 sec @ 96 mph
The 2014 X5 is faster than the 2014 MDX in most areas (other than 5-60mph).
But with the new tranny, the 2016 MDX is as fast, if not faster than the X5 in most areas. The 5-60mph sprint is particularly telling. It shows that the X5 has to overcome some turbo lag (and the extra 700lb) before it gets going, while the MDX would just hustle immediately.
