I agree - evolution rather than revolution. But for a winning high volume product like the MDX, it makes business sense to not stray too far away from what worked so well. Just hope the 3.5 liter GDI engine is quite a lot more efficient than our thirsty 3.7s.
Looks alone, I would seriously consider this as a replacement for our 2010 Tech/Ent in the 2015 or 2016 model year.

Acura hasn't said much about the 7 DCT in the RLX? I'm thinking they will keep the 6AT for the RLX until the sport hybrid hits the road. Acura might do the same thing for the MDX; wait until a sport hybrid MDX version rolls out before installing the 7 DCT. This might move the MDX into the +$60,000 (Krell sound system+advance package+sport hybrid+7DCT).

I've notice the Headlights are not as "fancy" on the MDX compared to the RLX. I imagine the MDX headlights will have an auto level feature?

I'm ok with the exterior design. Could it be better, absolutely, but I'm very happy to see that they didn't take a few steps backwards like they did with some other model refreshes.
Dying to know the details of the interior, especially dimensions. I really hope they made the 3rd row a legitimate seat and still left some room in the back for some cargo!
From what I've seen thus far, I'm not blown away, but I'm certainly not disappointed either. If i had to grade this prototype, they'd get a solid B from me.

I'm surprised they've elected to have a fwd drive option for this car? I feel that for an SUV in this price range, awd should be standard...I feel like, in order to create mass appeal, acura offers ways to cheapen their vehicles and, in effect, cheapens their brand.
#213
I agree on the 2wd/rwd...not sure I've seen a fwd suv for 45k. But people are comfortable buying it, then I guess it makes sense -- they do research this, after all. I wouldn't buy a 2wd because I live in the snowbelt.

We will need to wait and see what the price will be for the FWD, but there are cars that match that criteria, the Explorer, the GM trio, the JX, just to mention a couple.

In the end, if they're going to make money off of it, they're going to do it. Acura has always been the "entry-level luxury" brand. They want to entice people that are looking at buying a 7 passenger SUV and get them to upgrade from a traditionally non-luxury brand to "get their feet wet" in the luxury market. Most of the general public, when they see a MDX, they'll be like "Oh snap, an MDX". It's just us car enthusiasts that will see if its has the SH-AWD badge on it.

Bingo. Current base MDX is around $43K. When the new model is available, I don't think the price will go up a ton. Just look at the new Accord, tons of new features and they manage to keep the price around the same. Lets assume the price will remain the same. Lets also assume the AWD system is a $2K option (Ford Explorer AWD option is $2K). That brings you right around $41K. A full loaded Ford Explorer 2WD is $38K. Is $3K to upgrade to a luxury brand with Honda reliability justifiable?

Repost from the MDX thread:
I've read on one of the auto show coverage magazine websites that they had a "show floor update" regarding the SH-SHAWD hybrid system. The PR person told the website that there will be no hybrid version of the MDX. I'm sure that will be the case at launch, but not sure if they'll revisit that for MMC. I don't think anyone offers a hybrid SUV in the luxury segment. There are hybrid versions of other SUV's, but I don't think they sell very well. Looking at it from the engineering and sales sides, it makes sense. They already have the SHAWD system that markets itself, sells and performs well. It would pretty much be as easy as copying and pasting to the new generation MDX with tweaks for the new engine and longer chassis. Converting to a FWD drivetrain was probably a cakewalk since they can just base the drivetrain design off the V6 Accord with the ED engine.
Designing a hybrid system would've been a packaging nightmare. They would've had to package the transmission motor, the 2 rear drive motors, and batteries. It would be pretty risky to go the hybrid AWD route when you would have to put a ton of resources designing/testing the system and then hope people would jump on the hybrid SUV bandwagon. Since Honda is pretty conservative, I doubt they would release 3 drivetrain versions. They know what sells best and what the market is like and sticking with what works.

After seeing those videos, im really digging the wheels! I wasn't a fan at first, but the concave look really compliments the "sportiness" of the cars! Really hope they make that an offering!
That front bumber/lip is REALLY nice too! Hope that makes it to production!

I just want two or three more exterior color options. It would be nice to have the ability to put any interior color with any exterior color.

Since Acura is an American company, they are catering to the American market. I think its the way market is going and a way to gain market share. Infiniti JX, Ford Explorer, Chevy Traverse, Dodge Durango, Honda Pilot, GMC Acadia, Volvo XC90 all "midsize" SUV's with seating for 7 and all have both FWD and AWD options. Even the RDX has FWD and AWD options and it's selling well. Audi, BMW, and MB are AWD only and directly competing with each other even though BMW doesn't have a 7 passenger SUV. Lexus is also AWD only, but they have their sights set for the Germans. I don't think a FWD SUV would sell at all in the German/European market/climate.
In the end, if they're going to make money off of it, they're going to do it. Acura has always been the "entry-level luxury" brand. Lexus RX has always been offered in fwd configuration, i think the Enclave is also, I think this is a smart move by Acura keeps the price low to attract more families and doesn't scare buyers away from warmer states not needing awd. This move should easily add 10k a year to sales.
The SUV's I listed were all 7 passenger ones. I think the RDX was the market test for FWD. They saw RDX sales skyrocket and the new MDX should do the same when released.

Thought I would revive this thread with a bit of what I 'think' is a new observation. I have seen no indication to date that the 3rd row in the MDX would become capable of seating 3 people (like the pilot) rather than 2 people (like the current gen). Anyone else? I know there are arguments to be made for 'who cares...you can really only carry kids in them anyhow.....'.
Having at times had a need for it (for kids), I thought this was interesting. If you look at this you tube video of the prototype....watch when they pan over the rear of the vehicle. You can clearly see a MIDDLE headrest on the 3rd row seats (eluding to that seat now being able to occupy 3). I like that idea... Basically turning the MDX into from a 6 passenger to a 7 passenger family vehicle. Who knows, maybe even 2nd row buckets will be an option then? Sounding better and better, can't wait to see how it turns out this summer.
Look at about 1:59 on the video:

Very good catch! Offering the room to accommodate 8 passengers definitely is appealing, although I'm still a bit skeptical... Will have to just wait and see i guess. Any updates on a possible release date?
