2014 Acura MDX - RPM fluctuating on acceleration

Experts please help —- just bought a 2014 Acura MDX sh-awd and during light acceleration my RPMs do not climb steady they are jumping up and down and you can feel a jerky acceleration. It’s almost like a bouncy/jumpy acceleration and not smooth.

Please note when you floor it there are no problems at all. See video below any ideas!?!

could you provide the link or more info? I found the TL one but not sure I see the correct MDX one.

I just want to be sure I know what to tell the dealer when I bring it in... and I’m trying to understand if they extended the warranty fix for this like the TL. I just went over 80k miles so maybe screwed.

See the following TSBs:

TSB 16-062 - 2012–15 MDX: Judder from the Torque Converter Lock-Up Clutch

TSB 16-063 - 2012–15 MDX: Judder from the Torque Converter Lock-Up Clutch After Software Update

TSB suggests 8 year 80k mile warranty on this. Talk real nice to your dealer service advisor and see what they'll do. At the minimum I'd settle for you can paying for the fluid exchange and acura covering the software update.

I would simply bring to the dealer for their review, why would you need to tell the the trained techs how to fix your car? I can assure you the second you start doing that its the equivalent of being an ass when you check into a hotel...you'll end up in the rooms they save for those people. Attitude is everything when it comes to extracting maximum benefit from service writers.

Did you get it fixed? What was the issue or solution? I just purchased a 2014 mdx and I'm noticing weird rpm issues also

There are two TSB’s for this issue as shown above, one is a software upgrade, the other is a further upgrade with fluid change. My ‘15 needed this shortly after I bought it. Print them out and ask an Acura dealer if they have been done, in my case they hadn’t they did the upgrades and fluid change and now the car is as advertised. Very smooth. I had the two of them with me but never needed to pull them out.

Because a fair number of times, the customer mentions a TSB and the service advisor / tech has no idea the TSB even exists.

I just looked at a 2014 with 120k miles on it. It was doing this during the test drive. I sent them this forum. If this TSB is performed, does it completely solve the issue, and was there any damage from it being driven like this?

this issue basically the transmission required fluid drain and refill, even i did the TSB and it happen again after 20k. so now i'm just changing my transmission fluid every 10k miles.

I am not going to buy a car for that price that requires a fluid change on the trans every 10k miles to shift properly.....so if you do not change the fluid and allow it to keep jumping the rpms, damaged could occur?

How did this work out? I have a 2015 that is doing the EXACT same thing as in your video. I am wondering if this TSB fixed it or if it was something else like MAF sensor.

Our 2015 did this too. Had the TSB done in 2017 and the issue came back this summer after approx 24k miles. Dealer called the Acura tech line for assistance this second go around and was instructed to do another flush. It’s back to normal again but I assume I’ll be flushing it every two years.

At first we were replacing torque converters for this issue but they figured out that the fluid is deterioriating under certain driving conditions.

The service bulletin is to drain and refill the transmission 3 times driving the vehicle on a lift to 50 MPH between each fluid change making sure the torque converter goes into lockup. This typically fixes it. We change ATF every 45k...

Hello, how’d the appointment go and did that fix your problem? Checking to see what resolution will work best. Thanks

Found this thread after buying a 2014 MDX having these exact symptoms.

Drained 4QT out and put in 4 QT fresh trans fluid Part number 08200-9008A. $35 fix!
Much better acceleration and smoothed out the rev's. The car I bought sat for 6 months.

The last trans service was 12-15-2017 at 83000 miles. Changed on 4-15-2020 at 109000 miles. So 4k miles shy of the next service interval. I will do it again next service interval to get out even more of the old fluid.
