Transmission temperature very high.

Ok, I have a 15 MDX tech with the OEM Trans cooler. With my scan gauge I'm seeing temperatures between 187-200. This is with a mixture of some stop and go and just city highway driving( Some street driving+ 10 min of highway driving at 45-60mph) with ambient temperatures in the high 80s low 90s. This is very concerning to me especially since in the future I would like to do light towing. I'm especially concerned because 2 weeks ago the car was at Acura doing a simple drain and fill when they said the ATF looked a little burnt and they claimed the fan was not kicking in soon enough. I honestly have no idea what remedy they applied as it wasn't even on the invoice. Does anyone have an experience with the OEM cooler? Is it just a POS and working within it's limits or is there something else wrong? Transmission preservation is of the utmost importance to me.

This yesterday. Ambient temperature 87 driving in the city with street lights then 1.5 miles of driving on the parkway around 45 mph.

I can't answer your question from experience but most coolers tie to the radiator and the temp maintained in an engine is about 200 F. You might ask the dealer who did the service. I do know that in some cars when a torque converter fails the temps go way up. There have been some torque convertor issues on some 3rd gen MDX but I don't know what %. There is a software update to make the whole trans shift and behave better. Specifically there is what they call a torque convertor judder. Changing the ATF fluid is part of the fix.

How would I know if have the update or how would I go about requesting the update? I don't believe I've been experiencing any judder. In addition, a week ago I was able to drive 20+ miles on open highway going 60mph+ and the temps stayed around 170 so I believe city driving and arterial roads may be more than the stock cooler can handle.

ask the dealer who services it if there are any open recalls or TSB's on it. You can get to the TSB's at the top of the 3rd gen in stickies.
