Got hit from behind

A car tapped me today waiting on traffic. This plastic cover popped from my 2020 MDX... The plastic tabs are intact, but impossible to put it back without removing the plastic cover imo. I wonder if the dealer will try to charge me a lot for this lol.

if it was just the bumper that got hit then you are lucky because the MDX bumper is robust. We got hit in the 2014 on the freeway. She submarined us and totaled her car. All it took on the MDX was a new inner bumper, outer bumper, and new rear exhaust section. Total cost was about 2K but insurance paid it. She was uninsured so our uninsured motorist covered all of it. The key will be to match the rear bumper paint if it has pearl in it. The color that finally worked out for us after their fourth try was to match the color to the front bumper instead of the rear quarter panels. If you look at many MDX, the bumpers are a slightly less pearl color so the different angles of the sun don't change the color as much. On ours the paint would be perfect one minute and then if the sun moved the bumper was a significantly darker or lighter color. Matching to the front bumper solved that.

Yes. It was just a tap. Basically the person behind me lift foot off brake and hit me. Actual body and bumper is intact, just the plastic hitch cover got popped.

In looking at the picture it appears to just be that lower trim piece. And having removed that piece to put in an OEM hitch, you can snap it back in without removing the whole bumper cover. The thing to look for, however, is whether one of the two bolts that are in that area got disturbed, and whether the push-pin that goes into the metal bumper support got dislodged. The good news is that you can see all this while lying on your back without jacking the car up. Lowering the spare tire helps a lot to give you more room. If the hitch were in place it'd be a lot harder. From the picture you shared it doesn't look like there's a hitch there (although it's pretty dark). Anyway, take a look at the directions to install the hitch, as it gives you detailed info on how to remove that trim piece (and, no, you can do all this without removing the bumper...) LinkDeny

Update, dealer removed and secured the trim this morning. No damage in the body or bumper. Got charged 30 min labor.

I hope you are sending the bill to the person that "tapped" you.

If they bumped into you at a stop then they stopped way too close to you.

Or is there more to this story?

Yeah, that's what happened. She was behind me, and we were waiting on a traffic circle. She did not realize I was still in front and let her foot go off the brake. Got her insurance information, etc, but at 70 bucks, I am not sure if I should even bother continuing with this claim. My insurance told me since it's below deductible, I have to pay it and then they will investigate the other driver to make sure the other driver is at fault and then refund me the 70 bucks lol. Trying to think if this is even worth it.

I'd give her the opportunity of paying it or filing a claim against her company.

Why would you go through your company for this. Call her, send her the bill and give her the choice of paying or you filing with her company.

If you pay for it, then you are merely rewarding bad behavior.
