DIY Dual exhaust -Anyone up for it?
I know a lot of you are probably going to give the same response as in my ILX Dual exhaust idea thread; against it. And say that the hidden exhausts look better and that it's not worth wasting your time and money on ruining your new $48,000+ MDX. But this is for the few who might think it's worth it and think would look nicer.
Is anyone up for it? I think this would be a lot easier then the ILX since there is more room underneath to work with.
If any one is, I'll be more then happy to write a DIY similar to what I've done for the ILX (which has had success in getting some cutting going for single exit and Dual exits to show). The MDX, obviously wouldn't need any cutting, just simply removing the reflectors and mounting the exhaust with a similar tip as the shape of the reflector housing together. I guess anyway, you might have to cut the hole to fit a certain tip tat you can find (anything as close to the reflector shape as possible). More on all that later in the write up.
Here are just some pictures to get you drooling, I guess.

I'm digging it man. I always wished the redesign would have a dual exhaust setup, something along these lines. Looks good man. A lot more aggressive then the cheap reflectors!

And about the sarcasm, I thought we had a fight about adding exhaust to the cars, but I can't find what it was. Must have been something else but I can;t remember.
But yes, once some '14 MDX owners see this and say they're down for it I'll start gathering the needed pictures of what I can find while planning on writing this all up and posting it in the thread.
It will be almost exactly the same for the RDX but 10x's easier since the RDX already has dual exhaust, it just needs the reflectors to be cut out and the dolphin tips removed in place for some custom elbows.
Ans also, anyone who goes out and does this before I get the write up going, PLEASE protect your bumpers/ surrounding plastics. I don't think it's that prone to happen but I don't want any melting going on here. I'm pretty sure they got some sprays out there. I mean they use on on the fake Christmas tress.

I see two main ways of doing this.
Chopping the exhaust right after the rear axle and welding on a Y piece and running the pipes to the cut outs with Stock, 3rd Gen TL exhaust tips. That's IF they fit the MDX's reflector housings. This is probably the easiest and only way of doing it. It's also the way it was done on Switt23's ILX.
The other way would be to remove the second muffler and install a single inlet, dual exit one and run separate piping to each 'reflector' opening, with stock 3rd Gen TL tips. This is only if you're really picky and have more money to spend for your exhaust being equal lengths.
Another problem with this rout, is that there may not be enough room for you to run the second exhaust piping along side of the original. At least not around the suspension components and rear cradle. But then again you might depending on what diameter piping you're going with.
I'm almost positive that you will have to add heat shielding and hangers for the second piping, but I wouldn't worry about it if the MDX doesn't already come with heat shielding on the right side, which only has piping, no muffler.
Props to everyone who is going to do this! Can't wait to see some being done.

^^^ looks simple enough, but what about custom tips? Or are you just looking to cut out the red portion of the reflector and leave behind the chrome bezel? I'm no expert here but i don't think the bezel/outlet is made to withstand that type of heat.

I was hoping that the NIHS would require for all rear bumpers to be treated for heat exposure to prevent melting, but I haven't found anything. And we cannot rely on Acura to treat them so steps may have to be taken.
Zonian22's ILX has a single exit coming through the bumper and he hasn't mentioned any burning or melting yet.
Are the chrome housings around the reflector metal or plastic? And the TL exhaust tips would help keep the direct heat off of the trim, which is why I mention the TL tips vs a round tip. The TL tip is similar shaped which would help reflect the exhaust flow out and through the reflector openings vs a pipe just sitting there. I also believe the TL tips are a thicker metal which should help hold in some of the heat off the exhaust pipe its self. Making it harder for the heat to transfer to the plastic.
It's hard to judge, not owning a TL or MDX, and there isn't enough pictures online hat I can use to work with.
If the TL tips aren't working, then look into some auto zone tips that may be similar enough to do the job. If nothing works then you could go BMW X5 on it and have quads. lol.
***UPDATE The TL tip is not as similar as I thought when compared from the back angle.
Maybe another manufacture exhaust tip might be similar enough and work better...
I think custom tips will be the more likely way out on this. Like the Sandro's ZDX quad project.
Just maybe clean it up a bit more. (fill in the empty space with some curved metal??)
It's going to take some work.

not sure if this thread has progressed at all or if i missed another but the reflectors have been bugging me for a while and I've finally started to work on it....
started making up the backing behind the chrome tip, they will just be false backs to"look" like exhaust.. since routing the exhaust around the spare tire will be a waste of time and money.
going to take my mock up to a fabrication shop tomorrow to see what they can finalize up for me.
in the meantime, i just plasti dipped the reflectors to see what it would look like. which is terrible up close, looks decent from far away. especially if its dark. haha

VHT, DupliColor, and Rustoleum all make high-heat clear coat paints - may be a solution to the concern about high temperatures around those chrome pieces.

so i decided to work on it a bit more, the plasti dipped reflectors were already bugging me.
i got the shape figured out, and i had them sitting in place... but i was looking at it for a while i decided they needed to be longer inside so you could see less suspension and frame.... so i took the mock up and re made it twice as long
got those mounted up, was super happy with the outcome, opted to paint the insides of the matte black that way i won't have to clean them.
and this is basically what it will look like complete, going to take it into the muffler shop tomorrow and have them attach a couple brackets and mount em on.
i also decided that i will route the exhaust to both sides to add some functionality to the tips.
after looking under the mdx, the 2nd pipe can just go under the driveshaft and over the driver side lower control arm the same as the factory piping. it won't cost much to have a muffler shop do that. so why not.

While you're at it - are you planning on running a different muffler? something with single in / dual out?
I'm looking into the idea of a DynoMax VT muffler (with a spring loaded internal flap which is chosen based on engine CFM output) - attempting a 'best of both worlds' setup with some grunt when you go, but no drone for the 25k on the highway

hey, did you plastidip your splash guards? looks cool.

Now that the 2017 MDX is out with dual exhausts, anyone gotten the pipes and converted a 2014-2016? The mufflers are the same according to part numbers, so it is just the rear pipes that would be needed. They could exit under the rear panel with dual tips. Just leave the red reflectors in place.
