2021 Acura MDX
The next model change for the Acura MDX will be the 2021 model. It should be released in the fall of 2020 which is 3 years away. I have a 2016 MDX. Would you get the 2018 MDX for 2 years and then flip into a 2021 in 2020 or would you hold off?
The 2018 has a lot of upgrades vs the 2016 such as:
1. Molded park distance sensors.
2. New hood and grill.
3. Horizontal LED driving lamps.
4. Piping in the leather seats.
5. Dual exhaust
6. Auto high beams.
7. Apple Car Play and Android Auto.
Thoughts??? I am either going to get a 2018 MDX or keep my 2016 and buy a BMWF800GS.

First, source for 4th gen as well as Car Play and A Auto?
Second, to avoid confusion, the first 6 items on your list are 2017 mid-cycle refresh not 2018 updates.
To your question, hang on to what you have until the 2022 MY.

Thanks guys. I was in the dealership today getting brakes and pads changed under warranty and a salesman got a hold of me.
Source of the new infotainment software and interface was the GM of the dealership. Go play with it on the 2018 TLX. It is sweet.

I thought the gen 4 MDX would be the 2020 model year, probably available in fall of 2019? The usual advice is to avoid first year models. But, I bought a first year model, 2001 MDX and a first year model 2013 RDX. No problems with either model. If I had a 2016 MDX, I would wait to see the 2020. Maybe wait until 2021 to buy.
Good luck, Jim

The 2018 has a lot of upgrades vs the 2016 such as:
1. Molded park distance sensors. - thought they already have this, unless you mean all trims are getting it
2. New hood and grill. - They already updated the hood/grill with the 2017 model. Unless they're going to give the 2018 the matte grill.
3. Horizontal LED driving lamps. - doubt they'll change this
4. Piping in the leather seats. - already on the advance trim, unless you mean all trims are getting it
5. Dual exhaust - already on the current model
6. Auto high beams. - standard on all 2017 models
7. Apple Car Play and Android Auto. - this is the one thing that could happen, but haven't seen any conclusive info about this

My advice to you OP is to keep your MDX. The changes for 2017/2018 are not significant enough to warrant a switch unless you want the hybrid model and even then still not really worth it. Now if they had swapped the ZF9 and 3.5 V6 for a 9 DCT or 7 DCT with a turbo V6 then by all means I would say 100% go for it. But in reality (and I'm assuming you have our Canadian Elite model) you really are not getting anything that would be worth it. You already have the power fold mirrors, advanced safety tech, cooled seats and heated steering wheel. You practically have everything the 2017/2018 models have. You already took the resale hit so just hang on for a little while longer.

There is a chance 2000-2006 MDX (calendar years in production) and 2001-2006 (model years) are both correct for the MDX. The 1st and last model years can run extra long (up to 15-21 months), last model years can run under 6 months, or they might skip a model year altogether.

I'll leave this here.

Model year is the model year, regardless of what calendar year it was sold. In the general new car world there are new 2014's on the lots and 2018's have been at others since June.
There was never an Acura (or Honda MDX) sold as a 2000 model year.
The MDX was sold in AU model years 2003-2006, it was a flop.

I just posted a topic around the 4th Gen MDX and then saw this thread, so my apologies. Given the importance of SUVs in the luxury market, I am questioning whether the 4th Gen MDX would be a 2021 model or perhaps a 2020 model. If you look back at the history of the RDX and MDX, the RDX has been on a 6-year cycle, while the MDX has been on a 7-year cycle. With the MDX and RDX leading Acura's sales and being relatively close in terms of units sold over the past 5 years, I am wondering why the MDX would not move up to a 6-year cycle.

I actually was thinking along the same lines as you about a year and a half ago... I had a 2014 MDX Tech SHAWD and I traded it in for a 2017 MDX Advanced SHAWD to take advantage of some new technology and additional toys. I am planning to wait until the next redesign to change 2020 or 2021 model. It made sense to me because it was an upgrade along with the new stuff from the mid-cycle refresh. They had some sort of trade in program special at the time and I guess my vehicle qualified since it was low mileage. (2 year old model with17k miles) I ended up with the same monthly payment after trade in due to the equity I had.
So I would say that unless you are upgrading (getting a better model) along with wanting the new stuff from the 2017 model and getting a good trade in and financing deal, don't do it. I ended up doing it because I was getting much more car for the same monthly payment. (I know, I know... it extends my loan and I end up paying more in interest in the long run instead of paying off my car and waiting but to me, if I was going to have a payment anyway, I may as well have more bells and whistles.)
Just my 2 cents.

Apple Car Play and Android Auto Sales Manager at my dealer confirmed these are on the 2018 MDX, almost wish I had waited on the 2017 MDX Hybrid I bought but it is still a great car and I have learned to live with its less then stellar connectivity.
