my bad man. i apologize for that

i was just frustrated that the male connectors that i bought from pep boys were too wide for the windshield wiper relay and couldnt find a smaller width. the one i had was .250" width

i went to radio shack today hoping to find it and im glad they had it.

also since i have to put the WW relay over the male connector, whats the best way to remove this red cover?

in regards to the 3 prong switch, i understand what youre saying now. ill work on it again this weekend. im excited again

Don't use a male terminal at all for the wire you're "connecting" to the wiper relay. Just strip about 1" to 1.5" of insulation off the wire, stick it in the appropriate female terminal (as described in my original post), and push the relay back in place. There's no way you'll get an extra terminal in there with the relay!

THAT'S IT?! OMG hahaha

so the WW relay will hold the wire in place?

I actually made my fogs independent from head light this past weekend as well. it works great.

basically i did the same thing and used a relay and power source from WW relay. i wired it up and put the switch on one of the blank spaces next to the VSA botton.

i have HID (yellow) in my fogs and i have them on all the time. i love it. i was planning take pics of my work but i was an idiot and forgot to charge the camera sorry.

it depends on how you would like them to function
plan to have a separate switch to operate them or have them turn on with fogs or low beam

separate switch to operate them regardless of my fogs or low beam

i can use one thats plugged into my cigarette light but it would be nice to just create a separate switch

Dude, you guys are incredible...... I don't understand any of this stuff, lol! I wish there was like a College curriculum for this kind of stuff, I would enroll immediately. Man, if I had the brains to do these kind of mods myself I would be saving a hell of a lot more money than paying techs to do it for me.

a completely separate switch should be simple enough.
dont even need a relay for that. just wire from the positive end from the wiper relay (or any other power source which turns off with ignition), with an inline fuse, then the switch, then to the leds strips then ground it.
using the wiper relay will prevent you from accidentally leaving the lights one when the car is turned off.

yea i can do a video instead. i have to make it work first and then ill take it apart and install it it again.

which setup do you want me to take pics of.

also ill do a diagram of the switch setup for the LED strip based on what you said. im more of a visual learner.

what does an "inline fuse" look like? is this the same as the fuse holder?

it'll be a 2 prong switch.

dont have to use and inline fuse, its just a holder for a fuse basically. you can take it to the fuse box too.
http://www.amazon.com/-line-ACT-Wate...8664708&sr=8-1

i planning on doing the original setup in this thread. where the relay is used connecting to the wiper relay . i want to be able to turn on my fogs without the low beams

my biggest concern is to make it look stock. where to run the wires, where you spliced into the fog light wires, how to hide the wires properly. also, im looking for the proper way to mount everything. i dont want the relay and fuse just hanging under the hood somewhere. i want to enclose them. i have tried searching for a universal fuse box that i can put in and add to for future projects but i havent found anything.
i think i might just have to get one of those generic project boxes from radio shack and place everything in there

ah ok fuse holder. got it

i didnt run my wires through the firewall. im running my wires through crease on my passenger door.

im just using electrical tape in the engine bay to hide the wires on the side.

what im curious is if we can also make the DRL independent too?!

that would be sweet to have the drl on with the low beams
my guess is it would be the same as with the fog light setup.
you just have to make sure you splice in to the right set of wires so not to turn on the high beams

hmmm this is interesting. i don't have much electrical knowledge, but i may have to try this in like 2 months. would it be difficult to undo when i have to return the car at the end of the lease?

The fuse just kind of hangs out near the battery (it has to be 12" or closer to the battery)...I tucked it in kind of underneath the battery holddown.

My relay is bolted to the right inner fenderwell, but you could bolt it anywhere.

Not difficult at all. The only "invasive" part of this mod is tapping into the wires at the fog lights; and if you used quick taps (which I haven't had great experience with), it would be even easier to return to stock.

Why does it need to be 12" or closer to the battery?

what issues did you have with the quick taps, i have a few of those and was planning to use them. How did you splice the wires?
Also, how and where do you tap into the wiper relay?

The length of wire between the battery and the fuse is vulnerable to shorting out. You can put the fuse in an added circuit >12-18" away if you'd like...but the longer the wire between the battery and fuse, the greater area that is succeptible to sparking.

Question How is this possible?

This is not possible with a generic relay. It has to be a Double Pole/ Single Throw(DPST) for this application to work. I really don't know how anyone was able to follow these instructions and make it work. The wiring diagram is incorrect that you provided. Ive been over this with a few auto part store people along with electrical engineers, they agreed that there is missing information in this thread. The relay had to be a DPST, which is not generic and tough to obtain. A generic five pole relay only has one load(terminal 87a) not two(terminals 87a and 87), it switches between the two. A DPST will throw the power between both 87a & 87 at the same time.

Can you explain how you made this work. Im dying to figure this out!

This is possible with a generic relay, as I have been running exactly as I described in this thread, with literally the first relay I laid hands on, since I originally posted the DIY. I suppose it's possible that I happened to pick up a DPST relay by chance (I definitely don't have the package anymore), but if they're as rare as you say, I'm more likely to believe that it's a SPST.

Have you actually tried following the instructions and been unsuccessful, and that's why you've consulted with auto parts people and electrical engineers? Or have you simply not tried it?

Certainly it's not the cleanest or most ideal solution, but it is a solution. From which parts stores did you solicit information? AutoZone or an equivalent where employees are just looking for a job, or a local "family" auto parts store where the employees actually know things about automotive issues? Regardless, if you have more specific questions than "explain how you made this work," I'd be happy to try to answer them...but as of right now, I've already explained how I made it work with the parts I was able to obtain.

i just finished this mod today. ONLY use 1 terminal 87

you have to splice both positive fog light wires into terminal 87

here's the simple fix for my A/C.

just pull the A/C fuse #16 in and out and start the car.

the only thing in the engine bay is the relay that has 5 prongs. ive only connected 4 wires to that relay.

the switch is inside. i just need to figure out where to place it

Correct me if im wrong. What you guys did was wire up the foglight to an independent switch right? Would you be able to do this plug and play with a foglight wiring kit from pepboys?

i had to buy the parts individually and build them.

i got my wires and male/female connectors from radio shack

switch, relay, fuse holder, fuse from pep boys

i think i can get this done in an hour if i had to do it again

when i say plug and play, i mean i can build a plug and play kit after doing this install.

Though it's always good to warn folks of potential mishaps, warning people that your "A/C went out after doing this DIY" is like warning people that your cat coughed up three hairballs immediately after you ate your first Happy Meal. Entirely unrelated.

Yes, the point of this DIY is to wire your foglights to come on independently from your headlights. Are you asking if there is a kit available to obtain the same end result, or are you asking if you could get a set of aftermarket fog lights to turn on independent from the fog lights in the same way this thread describes?
