Aftermarket HUD - Parts lists/general questions

All,

Been a while since i've been on here, hope everyone is doing well.

I am seriously considering installing an aftermarket HUD, specifically the Pioneer AVIC-8200NEX. I have searched and read many posts in regards to the installation of an aftermarket system. I just want to make sure i have all my ducks in a row, in regards to my particular needs/installation. See my list below, please let me know if i have everything i need, and the correct parts listed. Feel free to make any comments. Also, with everything that i have listed, would there need to be any wire splicing or anything of the sort?

1. Pioneer AVIC-8200NEX - https://www.amazon.com/Pioneer-AVIC-.../dp/B01D6IUNEU
2. SiriusXM Tuner - https://www.amazon.com/SiriusXM-SXV3.../dp/B00NJTO4CY
3. Metra Inatallation Dash Kit - https://www.amazon.com/Metra-95-7805.../dp/B00IIC1ADS
4. Metra Wire Harness - https://www.amazon.com/Metra-70-1730.../dp/B002UM9HF0
5. SiriusXM Tuner to Factory Antenna Adapter - https://www.amazon.com/Sirius-Antenn...k+Maestro+SAT1 or https://www.amazon.com/Sirius-Antenn...k+Maestro+SAT1
6. Metra Radio Antenna Adapter (Not sure i even need this and if its the right one? Does this use the factory antenna? if so, does it affect the ability to use HDRadio for the HUDs that support it?) - https://www.amazon.com/Metra-40-HD21...ywords=40-hd21
7. iDataLink Maestro (Maintain steering wheel controls and see other vehicle info) - https://www.amazon.com/iDatalink-Mae.../dp/B00E4W1644

7. You can get a PAC unit for way cheaper and it does the same thing. I think iselfdevi and a few others got the answer/hang up steering wheel control to work... but I can't remember how he did it.

I know i could, i think it would be nice though to get that extra vehicle information on the HUD.

Also in relation to #6, i also see this as a possibility. https://www.amazon.com/Metra-40-HD10...iglink20955-20
Wondering which one i would need if i need it at all

Hey GameOver69, if you go through with it can you take a few good pictures for us? I was eyeing up the NEX 4200 (which physically looks the same) and I wanted to get a feel of how it looks inside the TSX. I've really only found one or two decent photos of older pioneer units with the smaller screen and the controls on the left side (not sure what model it is).

Anyway, this is so I can really see if I want to spend the money to bring the TSX up to date tech wise and also it actually look halfway decent. I know it is going to look odd to have the climate controls the only illuminated thing left on the screen above, but hoping a new aftermarket head unit would help keep my from eyeing up a more tech like vehicle (I plan to keep this TSX for atlas 5 years).

Thanks.

I always take pictures of my mods , just check my build thread for everything that i have done. I found a good deal on the 8200NEX, so i may bite, but will not do so until i make sure everything i listed in my first post is exactly what i need. So once all that is addressed, i will probably start ordering everything i need.

Yeah you need it, it's the adapter that plugs into your OEM radio antenna. For which version, they are essentially the same.. one has female connection and the other male. You need to look at your head unit and see which one is appropriate to buy. I can tell you for my head unit I used the one you linked in this comment.

I went with JVC KW-V40BT but it's kinda dated now. I wish I had a unit that did carplay, but I liked the fact that it was touch screen, and displayed audio info over BT. In addition, watching DVDs while driving is a plus haha.

Your car already has an XM tuner/antenna so probably you just need 5.. but you should confirm your head unit has a fakra connection for XM

Backup Camera & General Install Questions

Anyone have any preferences for backup camera? I am looking to get this one, from Pioneer. https://www.amazon.com/PIONEER-ND-BC...pioneer+camera

Also, since i am attempting the complete install by myself, i do have some questions.

1. Can the gps antenna stay on top of the radio under the dash, or does it need to be on top of the dash with full visibility? If so, how do i feed it to he radio, is there a little bit of play to get the wire down there?
2. I want to put the bluetooth microphone on the driver side door pillar. Any idea how to properly run that up there?
3. Whats the best way to get the backup camera wired up and installed. Specific and detailed instructions would be much appreciated.

In regards to the backup camera, if wiring is super difficult, is a wireless solution any good? Found this on amazon, and is relatively cheap. Just dont know how well it may work. https://www.amazon.com/XINDELL-Wirel...2%3A1248879011

I wouldn't bother going wireless. Too many issues with interference etc. Wiring is simple.. if you've ever installed an amp in your trunk its the same deal. You gotta run the signal wire and reverse signal thru the floor panels, zip tie them to the existing harness. I tapped into my reverse light for power and also reverse signal... this will switch the cam on when the car is in reverse.

Similarly you could find the reverse signal from the fuse panel, but i found this to be more tedious.

yeah i decided against it. i have ordered the backup camera already. Hopefully i have everything by this weekend. No i have never installed an amp. This is all new to me, but will give it the old college try haha.

Do you have any idea how i can not only use reverse for the camera, but also turn it on whenever i like? Also, how hard is it to fish the wire from the trunk to the front. Taking off the trunk paneling seems easy enough, same with driver side lower panel to run on the floor. Im more worried about the trunk to the rear driver side lower and upper seat/door panel, which would then lead to the front driver side door. That hard? Any tips on how to do that?

Thanks for going into detail your purchase and install. I appreciate this as I am looking to do the same and appreciate your past mods and pics that you do! I wish you good luck and can't wait to see the end product. I've been eyeing up the 4200 model along with a backup camera. I was going to go with the 4100 as it is cheaper, but apparently the datalink maestro doesn't work that with that model. Honestly, the datalink maestro is worth it being able to see all that extra information in your car and of course, bringing the aging TSX up to tech standards of 2016.

I still enjoy the simple look of the dash and using the knobs to control music, volume, etc. However, it is dated and since I plan to keep the car for atlas 5 years, this would be a wise investment for me.

Good luck!

I appreciate the kind words. In regards to the Maestro, dont buy it. It will not provide you with the information that you seek. I called their support and asked. Also you can go to their website, and it will actually allow you to go through a demo of what data it will provide you based on car and radio. To support all those extra features, it basically has to already have had them implemented in the car in some fashion already. Basically all we get are a few gauges. That's why i went with just the steering wheel module, as i see it retains all of the steering wheel button functionality. Few parts are starting to trickle in already, as i said it seems liek this weekend i should be able to get some if not all of the install done. I will of course post some pictures.

I originally was looking at the 4200, but since the car is not my primary vehicle anymore its the mrs.. she would rather have built in navigation then always having to have her phone connected for android auto. FYI, the guts of the the 4100 and 4200 are the same. The only difference is that you lose the ability to mirrorlink with the newer models.. so if thats not important to you, i would save your money and go with the 4100. I got a pretty good deal on the 8200, otherwise i would of went with the 8100.

Ah that is a shame about the maestro thing. Well that is the benefit of mirrorlink? I did some research on youtube and their website and it doesn't seem like much of a feature. I have an iphone so carplay is good enough for me.

Sorry for the late post, got everything done last weekend. Everything went well outside of the SiriusXM antenna adapter. The ACURA uses a proprietary connector, not FAKRA based. So i just winded up using the antenna that was included with the tuner. I got everything to work the way i wanted, included retaining all the steering wheel controls.

Check my progress thread for the pictures.Link Below.
