Windshield theft-deterrent etch
When I bought my car, the windshield (among other windows) had an etch of the Acura emblem and also my VIN and other numbers that are there for theft-deterrent purposes or whatever according to the dealership.
If I were to get the windshield glass replaced, does anyone have experience with also getting those numbers etched in, or would I have to go to the dealer to get it done?

to deter: to turn aside, discourage, or prevent from acting <she would not be deterred by threats>
exactly how would etching the vin into your windshield deter thieves?
(not meant to attack, just getting you to think)

the etching helps show that the car was not in a wreck that shattered the front windshield. the only reason it may deter thieves is that it makes it difficult to separate pieces at a chop shop

It's for theft. As others have posted, but mainly to prevent body shops and the like from using the stollen parts, and to help the cops figure out where the parts they find are comming from.
Your joy rider or amature theif wont even notice, let alone consider it a reason not to steal the car.
Get LoJack at least then there is a chance of recovering the car. Until it gets broken down into little peices, or shipped across the border.

I Spit On You.
You can take a knife to the etching... It comes right off... In my experience

To answer the OPs original question, you can ask your insurance company if they will send you a kit and you could etch the number in the new glass. Or you can buy VIN etching kits on-line and DIY. It is just a stencil and an acid that etches the number in the glass.

Vin etching is a way for the dealer to make extra profit. I have worked for Honda for 7 years. Etch is a product that the f&I managers sell. Don't waste your money. Spend a bit more and buy lojack if your concerned about theft.
We had a crosstour stolen from our lot. Salesman had a customer who didn't have a DL on him, so he couldn't let him test drive. So he just sat in the car with him and did a demo. What the sales guy didn't see was the customer take off 1 of the 3 keys off the key ring. He thanked him and said he would be back later with wife.
At about 2 in the after noon, we got a call from the customer who traded in the vehicle saying they got a text from LoJack and call from LoJack a saying their former car was possibly stolen.
The customer had LoJack with early warning system. Comes with 2 small fobs that if none present when the car is started, LoJack will alert you.
We looked, car was missing. We alerted the policy, they tracked it Houston Texas in a shipping crate with 15 other cars stolen from dealerships about to leave the country.
LoJack doesn't use gps to track, its radio frequency and is the only system used by the police. You buy once and no monthly fees.
If your worried about theft, etch will not do anything. We will sell it for $1,399 cost is about $700 with early warning system.
