Will the i-DTEC TSX get a 6-speed AT?
I read a while back that Honda was in the middle of developing a 6-speed automatic transmission. Then I noticed this article making mention of a 6-speed for the i-DTEC. I'll just repost what I put on the TOV forum. I'd like to get similar input from posters here.
So what do you guys think? Is a 6-speed AT a possibility? And if so, what advantages would it provide for an i-DTEC engine.
I e-mailed the author of the article, and he said it's not a typo. But I also don't get the feeling it's 100% certain. The author believes Honda is working to pair the i-DTEC with their new 6AT system, which is in development, for launch (with a likely debut of this 6AT unit later this year).
I do wonder if we won't see the 6AT with the i-DTEC engine in the Euro Accord and TSX. I realize Europeans are generally not nearly as into ATs as are Americans, but the complete lack of an AT in the diesel Euro Accord for so many years with gas ATs being available makes me wonder.
I may be dead wrong, but I wonder if Honda found that their diesel engine is best with a 6-speed transmission. It just seems that if they were willing to put a 5-speed in there, they could have easily done it by now.
Now Honda has an AT diesel Accord slated for release early next year in Europe. That may be because their 6AT will be ready for launch at that point. Then again the release may just be a result of the US getting a diesel and needing an AT version to sell well.
Any thoughts?
