Will be buying my first Acura this week. Question on Navi?
Hey everyone, noob here!
Long story short, last Monday on the way home from work, the life of my beautiful taffy white 2011 Honda Civic Si was cut tragically short when I was rear ended at 45mph by a Grand Cherokee whos driver fell asleep at the wheel. Needless to say it is totaled and I am awaiting the check from their insurance company.
I looked around a lot of dealerships for a new car and got my heart set on one of two used TSX's, both with navigation. One 2010 in white pearl, and a 2011 in dark grey metallic. In comparing the two models, it seems the only real difference is in this infotainment area. When I was at the dealership today, it was explained to me that the 2010 had an "older" version of the navigation system and the 2011 had a newer and more refined system. He told me this could not be upgraded/updated to the newer version. Is that true? And are there any real huge differences that would draw me away from the older version?

Correct. For once a salesman actually knew something. There are significant hardware based improvements to the navi system. The screen is a higher resolution and there is space on the hdd to store music.
Also, the white used in 2010/early2011 was replaced by Bellanova White as the factory that made a pigment for the previous white was destroyed in the Tsunami and never rebuilt. There may be issues in paint matching in a few years if you need bodywork done.
The front end also underwent changes in 2011 as did the taillights and trunklid - 2011 was a mid cycle update that also changed steering feel slightly.

Exactly, the '11 changes IMO are important and worth considering. I have an '11 TSX wagon. The '09 and '10 steering feel is wonky for lack of a better word. And the improved navigation resolution and speed are instantly noticeable.

Also, the front end was changed with that refresh, and at least to me, it looks tons better.

Another thing I mention because you had an si, modding is easier on the '10. Flashpro is not yet available for the '11, and many of the grills and bumpers people seem to want to use are for the '10 and '09.
The navigation system on the tsx is ok but the iPod/phone integration is terrible. It would have been cutting edge in about 2004. At least we can set destinations while the car is moving though.
So if you're at all into modding then I would go for the '10. Otherwise I'm sure you'd be happier with the'11.

even the HDD based Navi system in the TSX seems a bit behind its times when compared to other competitors... or even other manufacturers now days. to think about going with the dvd based system when you have a choice of going with HDD would be just a waste and not worth it.
and i believe there would be difference in response in the two system. HDD system having the better response lag over the DVD system.
(experience based on 2009 civic dvd nav system)

Also the '11+ have the distance indicating lines on the back up camera, whereas the 09-10 do not (which is pretty dumb, F U Acura). Also, I have an aftermarket subwoofer installed and sometimes the bass makes the nav disc in the trunk skip causing a disc error which temporarily disables your navigation.
In other words, go with the HDD based.
