when low on gas, squeeze the most of every drop!

I was heading out of a park so the road helped, being a long one with no traffic lights and I think no intersections either. There probably had to have been an overall decline. Made it to the station with double the miles left it estimated. Normally I don't cut it this close but I was trying to catch the visitor's center before it closed. Not too surprisingly, it closed earlier due to virus-related schedule changes and Google Maps was not updated.

I was pulsing between 45-60mph most of the time. The only inconveniences were waving a few cars ahead who had caught up to me, speed limit was either 55 or 65.

Probably could've kept it above 60mpg if it weren't for the section of regular streets with lights and slower traffic at the end near the pump.

well, yes. there is a 2 gallon reserve when the fuel light comes on.
its for exactly this kind of situation.

in general, one shouldnt "Squeeze the most every drop" because it will ruin the fuel pump if done regularly.

The fuel also serves as a coolant and/or lubricant for the pump. You would never want to regularly run any kind of liquid pump (oil, water (sump), fuel, etc) at or near low levels as you run the risk of over heating or damage.

I see, by squeezing I meant the mpg while going to the station, so squeezing the most from each drop and pleasantly surprised at the mpg, not down to the last drop. A rare and extenuating circumstance to cut it close.
