I heard noise coming out from the back of the car when driving 40mph on uneven road, the noise sounds like a piece metal touching another piece metal. further investigate, the noise seems like coming from a grey metal box which locates on the right of the rear left speaker inside the trunk, when i tap it with my hand, i do hear the similar noise.
i am thinking bring my car to the dealer for warranty repair, since i don't get the noise all the time. so i am worrying the technician won't hear the noise.
Do you guys know what that grey metal box is? had similar issue before?
I have attached a picture showing the grey metal box.
All they will do is stuff felt behind that box so that there will be no more metal on metal contact....
save yourself a trip to the dealer and just stuff some kind of soft material behind the box...
you already have the trunk half torn apart....
maybe there's something inside the grey box that makes the noise, not just the outside contact. I am also wondering what is the box use for, why it's there. if the box is defective, i will ask them to replace it because the car still has 3 months of warranty.
what you mean by "truck half torn apart"? i didn't disassemble anything in the trunk. The trunk came like that, is this what you mean?
Guess all that stuff is in the sides of the Sport Wagon. btw could that box be the satelite radio tuner? It looks a lot like the one in my old Audi and it was in the back.

What the grey metal box is?
It is a counter weight! It is a solid piece of mental. It is there to prevent resonation of the rear deck panel when the subwoofer is in action. Check to make sure the upper mounting bolts are not loose. Or it will vibrate.
The bolt is not loose, it won't even move a millimeter when i shake it. But if i tap it with a towel on my hand, using little force, it does make noise. I am just going to put something soft between the frame and the grey box, see if this will get solved like other people.
So i was trying to pinpoint the source of the rattles when the stereo is on today... so i go in the trunk and turn on some music. the ENTIRE deck on the tsx will shake. WTF. Well, guess i'm going to be shoving a LOT of towels in there.. it stops rattling when i put some force on the lower (flimsy) metal thing.
can you guys take a picture showing where to insert the towels? the gap looks so small. thx
Listen Guy! Stop taking this nonsense approach to solving the vibration problem. You posted a question to a problem that is bothering you, & most of the answers so far is making fun of the situation. The weight BALLAST is acting as a sound damping device. It is held onto the deck panel by at least two bolts. From the picture you posted, it appears that the bolts are on top of the deck panel. One of the bolt maybe loose & the washer is what maybe vibrating. You need to remove the rear deck trim panel & correct the problem there. On my 2013 TSX the weight ballast is on the right side & the mounting has change. This could be due to the fact of the problem you & others are having or because I have a V6.
You can continue with the rag job repair or do it the right way. Please follow the link below & read up on how to control nose in your car. Us car audiophile guys have taking this method to control noise & vibration! I recommend you pull the rear deck trim panel & fix the problem permanently.
Yeah but the thing is... i tried to take apart the rear deck and it's near impossible. you also have to take off the SRS side airbag covers to do it and i am not comfortable screwing around with airbags

Start by disconnecting the negative battery terminal & wait 3 minutes.
1) Remove lower rear seat cushion
2) Remove both side bolsters
3) Remove both rear door opening seals "as needed"
4) Fold down seat back
5) Remove both left & right C-pillar trim "NOTE: The upper clip must be replaced with a new one when the C-pillar trim is reinstalled". A rubber mallet will be needed to release this clip.
6) Remove the rear deck trim panel.
Special tool needed, KTC trim tool set SOJATP2014 or similar aftermarket brand.

Since you guys have found the source of the problem (or very likely to be at least), is it actually still a waste of time going to the dealer? Like show them in person the sound, and point to the box and tell them the bolts are likely loose. If you're polite enough, maybe they'll tighten it up for you without hassle.
Me personally I'd go with the MFT "rag job" fix, cuz it's too much work to fix it the "proper way" myself, as I'd have to buy special tools as you mentioned. But I'd probably give the dealer a try first if you haven't already, and since we're all pretty confident it's the box, explain the situation to them and be nice about it or they'll just say no without even trying to listen to it.
^^^ Read the information in the links provided in post #34. There is more than just the ballast that can make the noise. The tools are cheap you can find them @ amazon & they are not specific to just this brand vehicle.

I took this trim off when I removed my rear deck. I didn't replace the smashed clips and the trim stays just fine. The deck was a huuuuuuuge pain to remove. Also instead of using a rubber mallet I just punched it with my hulk hands.
