TSX SportWagon Roof Strength
Something I hope none of us ever need to find out about, but pretty impressive nonetheless:
IIHS Roof Strength Test Results
One of the reasons I was initially looking at Mercedes to replace the Saab 9-5 my wife and 4-year-old use (also our family tripmobile) was due to the incredible roof strength tests of all MB's. Sort of gave me the impression that MB is great at making a driver/passenger capsule that really protects in any accident. Of course, this is in conjunction with the offset and barrier crash testing, but the picture is painted in the case with MB.
So IIHS finally released its tests of the TSX SportWagon and wow... Took more peak force to crush the roof of the SportWagon than the C-class. Just makes me feel even better about my purchase. The big thing I worried about is safety in case of an accident, but the Acura TSX has had great results all around in the IIHS tests.
Just another reason I'm liking this car more and more.
Interesting that in other categories, the Acura RL and RDX actually fared rather poorly. The RDX is at the absolute bottom of the Midsized Luxury SUV list as "Marginal" (GLK and M-class are at the top) and the RL is at the bottom of the Large Luxury cars list (new Saab 9-5 is way on top there), also as "Marginal."
Edit: Another interesting tidbit, if you go to the midsized moderately priced cars, you can also see the drastic improvements the redesigned Sonata and Optima achieved the pre-11 models were at the bottom. Further up the list you can see the redesigned models falling more in line with other manufactuers. I've known two people that died in Hyundais, and I always pretty much looked at them as deathtrap mobiles. These results are encouraging though. I love the design of the Optima in particular, inside and out. Nice to see the Korean manufacturers paying attention to safety.

having been in two accidents in the TSX sedan, i can tell you, they really do their job. they held up amazing well for what the accidents were. one was me getting tboned by a bmw. crumpled the entire passenger side(im talkin both fenders, and both doors, done 13K worth of damage). and the other was my fault, i hit behind the back right tire of another car, essentially tboning the rear, and took the bumper clean off. my car was beat up, but i still drove it about 40 min to the body shop the next day. you can ask Stak and a few others who've been in TSX's that got totalled. they walked away from the accidents. the car will take the majority of the impact on itself, its amazing what these babies can do
