Hagerty Announces its Annual Hagerty Hot List: Top 10 Future Collector Cars Under $50,000
TRAVERSE CITY, Mich., Jan. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- After witnessing in Scottsdale, Arizona last week a 1960 Ferrari 250 GT SWB California Spider sell for $4.95 Million at Gooding & Company and a record price of $660,000 for the first production 1955 Ford Thunderbird at Barrett-Jackson, many car enthusiasts are left wondering who could possibly afford a collector car? With Hagerty's Hot List, you might already have the collector car of tomorrow sitting in your garage.
To help the future collector, McKeel Hagerty, CEO of Hagerty Insurance Agency and a respected collector car valuation expert, has compiled his choices for Hagerty's Top 10 Future Collector Car picks (photos available upon request).
"In creating this year's list we took a look at cars available as new models for 2009 that will have collector appeal in 15 or 20 years," says McKeel Hagerty. "These are mass produced cars with a MSRP of less than $50,000. Included are a wide range of models that span many different market segments."
Hagerty's Hot List:
1. Acura TSX: This could be the car that the young "tuner car" enthusiasts of today choose to purchase as their "tuner collector" of tomorrow.
2. BMW 1-Series Twin Turbo: This is a new car launch that has the right ingredients: superior engineering, affordable price, nimble and fast performance.
3. Chevrolet Camaro: Just like the new Mustang and Challenger, this is a retro throwback that will stand out as a collectible bowtie down the road.
4. Dodge Challenger SRT: Mopar enthusiasts have been waiting a long time for this much anticipated tribute to one of the icons of the muscle car era.
5. Ford Flex: This is a different (and we think cool) vehicle for Ford this year. It is edgier than the Edge, and still caters to the growing crowd who cannot decide between a station wagon, mini-van or SUV.
6. Ford Mustang: The 2010 Mustang will be available in early 2009. Even though this is a refresh of the current retro model, it has features never before offered on a Mustang. The interior creature comforts such as dual climate control, impressive stereo/navigation systems, and a back-up camera make this more than just an American muscle car.
7. Mini Clubman S: The Clubman is a slightly larger version of the already popular Mini. Mix this new model with the performance of the "S" model Mini and we're certain this will have a following by collector car enthusiasts.
8. Pontiac G8 GXP: This new affordable family sedan with a 0-60 time of 4.7 seconds definitely stands out in a segment filled with many not-so-exciting competitors.
9. Pontiac Solstice GXP Coupe: The Solstice has been out for several years now, but only in the form of a convertible. The convertible has been positively received and we predict the first year for the new Coupe version will stand out in the future as well.
10. Nissan 370Z: Throughout the nearly 40-year history of the Z car, these always seem to gain collectible status. The new 370Z appears much less an evolution of the previous 350Z and more of a tribute to the original Z car design. We like this Z and expect you will too.

My wife told me about hearing this on the radio and I gave her the old "honey, I know car names all sound alike to you, so you probably heard NSX or RSX, right?" Needless to say, I am both pleased to see this and eating some humble pie.

Haha I was shocked and proud too to hear about this. Go tsx sorry about the broken links and wacky coding guys its my first post here i just got a 08 tsx like 3 weeks ago. disregard the first link i actually found this reading through

If tunning is the reason for the TSX's anticipated popularity, I would assume the 1st gen would be more desirable... but at the end of the day, the the 2 cars are not that far appart.

this is good to know. hopefully it'll help resale.
I probably won't keep my 05 much more than another year... figure I might as well get that 370z before the california air resources board destroys sports cars as a whole...though my mom wants to buy it from me so maybe it will stay in the family.

I see very little interest in most of these cars 10-20 years from now and how many are going to be selling for big money? I bet even an all original, low mileage NSX Zanardi edition wouldn't go for much.

Think of cars like AE86's. Highly collectable, but still relatively cheap. S13-15 silvia's are in the same category.
Do they have to be worth mega bucks to be called collectable?

When the new NSX was coming out people said the old ones would be worth more because of how different they are and now that the new NSX is dead people say the old ones will be worth more because they're unique. I don't buy either argument. I think in general Japanese cars don't sell for much at auctions.
I definately agree with your point, but a NSX Zanardi ed. is going to be worth mega bucks now that the new NSX has been canned. Makes it even more collectable now.

Some people "collect" barf bags but that doesn't mean there's any value in it.
I find it very difficult to believe that a mass produced vehicle like an Accord/TSX or a Pontiac G8 is going to have any collector's value. Back in the days when you had build sheets with all sorts of different options I could see it but nowadays.... probably not.
The VW Beetle/Bus were mass produced but due to the numerous rare options (Okrasa engines, etc... they can be uncommon) they are not only collectable but also, in some cases, valuable.

They make 'em over here, and they loose their value like the world economy!
They are cheap performance over here, but they have heaps of problems.

The idea behind all the old muscle cars was cheap performance too. Part of the reason those things are as in demand now is specifically because they were built so poorly. Not many have survived this long so they've become rare. Perhaps the G8 will fall into that category? I do like the exterior styling but the inside is just the same generic GM puke that's inside every other GM car. There's one that goes past my house pretty often with a custom exhaust and I have to admit, it sounds pretty gnarly. Like a typical American V8 though, full of anger but completely lacking any refinement.
It seems a lot of people are intent on driving the TSXs into the ground. It might be there just aren't that many of them around in 25 years. Especially those with low miles. The things that people remember fondly from their youth tend to influence what they look for when that mid-life crisis rolls around.

No way. The only Acura collector car will be the NSX.
People on AZ in the off topic section keep saying that the Legend is a collector's car, maybe the 1994-1995 Legend coupe with the Type II engine.

I seriously doubt a Euro Accord will be a collector's car. That's like saying people would pay money for a Shitation (Citation) or a Toyota Corona. The NSX is a collector's car but it will never be seriously valued as a GTO is I think. Maybe the Type R or something but that's not many. Anyway a big problem with 'collecting' an older Japanese car is finding parts because nobody is making them. Sport Compact Car talked about this when they did an article on a Civic and an NSX. Without parts restoring one of those will be damn near impossible.

WTH happened to my garage
^ Yeah, right? Try ordering a fender liner or lower valance/gravel guard for a 95 Skyline.
I can see 1st year + production collectability on stuff like Preludes, Accords, all gen Integras, CRX's, and 91-95 Legends...what a beautiful car.
