Speaker buzz= new speaker or amp issue?

TSX TECH

At volume 14-17 there was a nasty buzz coming. Couldn't figure out where. Already told dealer, while ordering the steering wheela nd window regulator.

This morning played aorund with moving the music front and back and from side to side.

Seems like the "buzz" noise is coming from passenger rear.

I did some searches on here, and lots of this came up in the TL forum as well.

Some said there is a ground problem, some said just replace speaker.

Anyone in the TSX world had this issue, or know what the problem is?

Thank you

If you can isolate it to a single speaker then that's most likely the problem. There might be a tear in the cone, otherwise substitute the speaker to test.

I've had all the speakers replaced 3 times. The subwoofer 1 time. It's a combination of problems, Acura says it's the Speaker, but there was a post a while back where someone did a wave test and they were shocked at all the distortion in the signal going to the speakers. So basically the amp is incredibly cheaply made, the used TONS of equalization to make sub par speakers sound relatively good, considering the amp powering them. So what they will do is replace your speaker with the "upgraded" version. From what I was told it has a different voice coil, but to me they sounded totally different than the original speakers. They seem to have a bass attenuation to them that the original speakers didn't have. But so far, the last set seems to be settling in a bit and they haven't blown as of yet. I'm sure they will though, first time the weather is nice and I have the windows down and don't think to turn the bass down, they are toasted again.

At what volume do you usually listen to your music at? Also connected through iPod, AUX, CD, etc?

usually it's around 15-20, if a songs really good, 27 at the most, but when it's summer and on the highway with the windows down, it can be at max. Point being I had a 1993 Honda Accord with the factory radio and factory speakers and I ran that thing at max with no issues, the "upgraded" ELS system should be able to be played at maximum volume. So it doesn't matter what the source is, what the volume is, or what the bass is set at. It should all be matched. And 90% of the time it's through bluetooth.

Oh yeah, I agree. I was curious since you said you've had the speakers replaced 3x and sub once lol. What is the max volume anyways? 30? I don't think I've gone past 23-25.

40 is the max. And as you go louder, the bass goes lower on it's own, first at 27, then as you go louder treble is also reduced.

Thanks guys the info is helpful. The ELS system isn't as good as my standard system in the Lexus Hybrid I just got rid of, which is disappointing, but it is what it is.

I haven't had it higher than 17 yet.

Will keep you posted if dealer says amp 0r speaker.

Yeah they didn't.

WHen I took it before X mas, they ordered windshield surround garnish, new steering wheel, new window regulators.

Jan 6/7 they installed all. At which time sound was confirmed to be bad from rear speaker, which they ordered.

Not sure why they don't stock it.

You have a wagon. I wonder if it's a different speaker.

I couldn't tell you sir. The TSX wasn't a car I ever wanted, so it wasn't on my radar, so I didn't much pay attention to these things.

Once I get it fixed, I will post the parts number here, so you can guys compare and check it?

Update

Took car on a 3100 mile roadtrip south of the border. AFter getting back, car went to dealer on Monday.

Dealer said when he ordered the door speaker, he got a pair instead of one (don't know why).

So he replaced both speakers.

No more buzz (for now).

God my warranty is getting milked on this car!

I start to wonder if they maybe updated the amplifier, someone way back when did a test and found there to be huge amounts of distortion from the amp. Which dirty sound easily = fried voice coils. They tried to remedy it with speakers with different voice coils, which, in my opinion, changed the sound quite a bit. I've had every single speaker (except the dash surround speaker) replaced, and the front door speakers have been replaced 3 times now. Keep us updated on how the latest "repair" goes. BTW It's Panasonic who is the weak link with these systems. They made the cheapest amp possible.

whenever i drive with no music, there is this vibration noise and maybe something is loose... do i need to take this to the dealer?

Are you sure you don't just have something in the door pocket? There shouldn't be any sound from the speaker when it's off.

I often hear noise on the passenger side. The culprit is the passenger didn't position the seat belt back properly and it intermittently hits the pillar. Just one theory if some of you are having weird noise issues unrelated to speakers/amps.

LOL I've had the seatbelt noise too, and someone mentioned the sunglasses in the holder rattle too. Worst thing I had happen was to loose a socket into the floor panel in my ITR. It rolled around constantly! I could feel where it was but it was like a maze to get it out. So one day I took to an empty parking lot, and figured out the correct left right accelerate stop combination to get the socket to the opening it apparently went in at. Good times.

Lol I've also lost a clip-nut thing that came with my OEM front underbody spoiler hardware inside the front bumper. I knew exactly where it was in the bumper... but it was near impossible to get out! That was a pita to get out haha

Not so easy. Only real option is going line level inputs into different amps. But that's not what I'm looking for. I'm very happy with the sound when the speakers are working. And that its all factory and no aftermarket stuff. I was fine with installing all that stuff when I was in high school. Now having room for stuff in the trunk is helpful. :-)

Exactly. Too old to change the stuff, plus my AM radio only doesn't necessitate subs and amps

I just don't want crackling sounds.

Stock is cool too but you will undoubtedly fight this issue the duration of vehicle. There really is no solution for bad stock electronic components as they will surely continue to fail since they are just swapping out apples for more bad apples. The stock head unit, if like mine, puts out a balanced signal so this is much better than "line level" or "low level" you just need an amp that accepts "balanced inputs" and you're golden. Oh, you can keep the trunk as all this fits under the cargo tray nicely.
