Oil Consumption Issues..

So I just recently had a bit of a scare, I guess I wasn't realizing exactly how often I was adding oil. I would see the light flicker on a sharp turn, check oil, it was usually half a quart or so low. The past 3 months I have been documenting the oil usage. Anyhow I forgot to take the first mileage, but when I did remember the second time I thought I'll drive 1,000 miles and see how much oil it uses. Well this past Saturday I started up to go across a street kinda fast and for the first time ever I saw the low oil light going in a straight line. Freaked out checked oil barely touching dipstick.

I remember doing a recall around 31,000 miles to have the ECM reprogrammed due to bad timing that can cause deposits on the rings and can cause excessive oil consumption. I'm at 74,000 now, and seems that the 31K of my morning drive (3 miles) park for 3 hours, 3 miles back home, then repeat in the afternoon probably would have been enough to cause this damage.

That is going to be my argument. I've already opened a case with Acura Customer Support and taking the car in on Friday for an oil change and to express my concerns.

Any suggestions from anyone who has had this issue and gotten Acura to cover it? As I see it I was driving a car with a known issue for 31,000 miles unbeknownst to me. Anyhow options are greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Have you looked at this thread?

I went through the same experience I think.

I did see that thread, but it seems those were problems right out of the gate, that's not the case with me. My car was fine for the first 50,000 or so miles, it's just been progressively getting worse. And the only thing I can see it pointing to is the ECM Reflash. I literally start the car in the morning, drive 3 miles and it sits for 3 hours, drive 3 miles back home... it sits again for about 3 hours, then repeat one more cycle. So for 31,000 miles it was cold starts witch the TSB says is the timing issue that can cause excessive oil consumption. Anyhow the are doing an oil consumption text, I take the car back in 1,000 miles, but I swear they put different oil in. We shall see. Hope this isn't just a colossal waste of time.

I wouldn't let them do an oil change at every consumption test.

Get your oil change and go back every 1000 miles on the same oil and filter and retest.

My oil didn't dip until the 2000 mile driven mark.

I went through 4-5 visits (I think?) before anything was done.

2010 Manual, and I don't think they change the oil every time I go to have it checked. I just happened to be at 10% when I took it in. I think they see what it uses between oil changes. And your right mine doesn't start to eat it up really bad until close to the 40% maintenance minder mark, that was when it went through over a quart in 800 miles. They also said they didn't hear the VTC rattle on start up and told me it was most likely because the oil was low. So this morning I start the car and what do you know, plain as day rattle. They have to make everything so difficult sometimes at the dealership. And do you think they pulled a trick putting a higher viscosity oil in to prove me wrong on the oil consumption test?

I'm not sure if this helps, but I have 38,000+ miles on a 2011 wagon (AT, 4 cyl, etc) and my oil level has gone down from the top "dot" on the dip stick to the bottom dot by the time I hit 30-40% oil life per the maintenance minder, which by my estimates is around 3,500 miles give or take 500. Oil is Mobile 1 Advanced Fuel Economy, which I'm trying for the first time.

I do drive in the upper RPM range semi-regularly with or without the paddle shifters, so it's somewhat expected for me. I usually just top if off when I hit 40-50% on the MM, but it isn't much. I do my oil changes myself around the 10% MM mark typically and the worst I've seen is 2 qts low (without the mid OCI top off) when I ran the MM down to 0%, and that was around 7,000+ miles. That was using standard M1 synthetic. Usually, I'd say it's down around 1 qt or so at normal OCIs, using M1 as well.

Also, M1 synthetic, if anyone is using that, has a reputation across certain forums to burn more in certain engines than others. I've yet to see any Honda engines with issues, but wouldn't be surprised if that's part of it for me. I'm no tech, but I've seen significant differences in oil consumption between M1 and other oils I've tried like Castrol Edge and GTX Syn Blend in my old car, a VQ35 Nissan which had massive oil burning issues period. Not sure how the OEM Honda oil stacks up against these other oils though. Or if that's even an issue here.

Interesting. I also have a 2010 manual, which has about 82,000 miles, and it's started to burn some oil in the past six months or so. After my most recent oil change, it was low after about 2,000 miles, which I would not expect with a Honda engine, but it's probably considered "normal."

I don't use synthetic. I use 0w-20 as that is what is stamped on the oil cap, and is recommended by Acura, I also follow the maintenance minder religiously. I had a 1993 Accord with 334,000 miles on it and it burned less than half a quart between oil changes, which for that car the minder switched over at 7,500 miles. So no I don't expect a 2010 with 75,000 miles on it to burn SIGNIFICANTLY more than a 1993 with triple the mileage. And I really do think it's due to deposits being formed on the rings due to driving it for the first 31,000 miles with the improper injector timing that there was a recall for. It specifically says cold starts. My commute to work is 3 miles, the car sits for 3 hours. I drive 3 hours home, the car sits for another 3 hours, I drive back to work. Car sits for 3 hours and I drive home again. So basically 4 cold starts per day before they sent me a notice to have the recall (ECM refresh) performed.

I had understood that all 0w-20 was synthetic by its very nature; you can't get non-synthetic 0w-20. Can anyone confirm this?

http://www.consumerreports.org/cro/n...cars/index.htm

My 2012 6mt with 25k miles burns a lot of oil, but not as much as the absurd 1qt/1k miles they require in order to do anything about it.

Fuel economy race brings expensive oil to inexpensive cars

The date of that report is Consumer Reports News: September 19, 2012 09:08 AM. It's on every shelf and totally available in Dino oil. In any event, towards the last 30% of the maintenance minder it's more than 1 quart / 1,000 miles. So we shall see what the end result of this all is.

Weird... my low oil light (the red one) just came on tonight for the first time. I have had the yellow warning prompt before but only when taking sharp corners, like in a parking lot for example.

My oil is at 10% and I am about to book servicing for next week. It's a 2012 manual with 45,000kms. Judging by what I'm reading above, it is not just me or my car. I would expect the oil to be dirty and perhaps burned up slightly between servicing, but surely not to this extent. For the record, I often drive in a spirited manner but not abusively. My wife drives it most often... which is far from spirited. It's just not adding up.

Also, Honda Canada does not honor all recalls posted in the US as I found out when inquiring about having the ECU flashed to get rid of the silly 'rev hang'. I'll see what they say about the injector timing... but I won't hold my breath. Focking Canada.
