Do you guys have the headlight set to Auto all times?
 

Hi,

Quick question... i was driving other day and came to this thought...

I know day time running light will always be on when the engine is on.

But, when i put them on automatic, will going back and forth between DTRL to HID will hurt them in a long run?

And is there a way for HID light to turn off as soon as the engine is off as well? I don't like the HID to be on for 15 seconds after the engine is off... but want to leave it on auto...

I would want it set as auto because I sometimes don't turn on the HID at all at night... but don't want to wear out the HID when I leave and it stays on..

Don't use auto if you care about longevity on your ballasts. :2cents:

I use auto, except in the rain, when I turn them on manually.

Occasionally turn them off when driving through wooded areas where they flip on n off.

No issues in 45k miles on this car and 100k on my S6

You can set the auto off timer on your mid I believe. I have mine set to auto and have driven 100,000 miles over 4 years. No issues. Haven't had to change the hid bulbs or ballasts yet.

I as other have posted turn on my hid's when it's foggy out.

VLED is coming out with an LED harness that will be able to fully utilize low diktats and high voltage for high beams. I'll be getting some when they release them this summer.

Yup. Auto all the time unless I need to manually override the position on or off.

The auto setting has made me lazy and now I feel like a common pauper when I drive a vehicle that requires me to *manually* turn the lights on. :ugh:

also, i think how stupid it is, plus wear and tear on ballasts and HID bulbs, every time you go under an overpass lights on/ lights off. stupid.

Or, you know, just adjust your sensitivity so you don't have your headlights go on under ever overpass.

Nothing about it is stupid. It should probably be mandatory, seeing how many people on the roads nowadays forget their headlights. It's way too high.

Auto lights aren't stupid. People who don't know how to use them are.

In other news.. leaving it in Auto mode won't hurt anything. OEM's usually guarantee over 1million cycles.

I never use Auto. Never have probably never will. Im just in the habit of turning them on when I need them.

I do leave fogs on whenever my headlights are one which I probably shouldnt do. But I like the amber glow i see when driving close to a wall or uphill so I leave them on when headlights are on.

I'll be upgrading to some decent fogs soon at which point Ill probably start keeping them off so they last longer.

I don't use auto only because of my concern about the ballasts. I had my lights set to "min" for several weeks, but they were still turning on in wooded areas and under overpasses. If I had halogens or LEDs I would, but I have found the auto is too sensitive for me in normal use.

Your eyes are naturally drawn to the brightest light - one reason we can't help but look at oncoming headlights - even momentarily.


If you turn your fogs off, then your eyes will be drawn further up the road. Turn your fogs on and your eyes will be drawn closer to the front of the car.


This makes perfect sense in fog. In heavy fog you hould be driving much slower and you'll want to see directly in front of your and the sides of the road to avoid obstacles - but during clear weather with faster speeds you'll want to see farther down the road so that your speed doesn't outrun your reaction time.


While we often talk about those "junky foglights", very few of us realize that they are working as designed and that there is science behind that design.

I used auto for the first month or so. Then I got annoyed how they would come on all the time when going under overpasses and in parking garages etc. Now I'm all manual. I'm the boss.

Personally I don't use auto with my Tl... I don't think it will hurt the parts because they are oem.... and keep In mind for those who doesn't like it.. it's a safety feature you can always turn it off .. I'm more concerned with my fogs burning out than my headlights.

Me too... except I use my Corner lights all the time because of the switchbacks. They make really cool DRL's.. especially during dawn/dusk. (See my avatar)

Yep. Most mornings when I leave for work the sun is barley up and it's not dark enough for headlights. I'll turn off my fog drl and only have my switchbacks on. It's a nice clean look with the LEDs.

You need to get the tritons! They are amazing. Plus you can transfer those to any car you end up buying in the future.

They still need resistors right? I have my current ones already wired up. Problem is, I can't remove the headlights without ruining the wiring I did.. I didn't leave enough length to pull the headlight out and remove the LED :(

I want the tritons, and I thought about being able to use them on any other vehicle too, but it would look silly if you didn't have headlights that weren't already cleared out (amber removed).

Also, I think maybe I saw that VLED is going to make a plugnplay version? Already has resistors and right adapter.That would be awesome.

The tritons are plug and play. They have the correct resistors inline. Check out the picture from my thread below.

i had tritons in my lights PNP resistors are built in. and there is room behind the light to mount them to the fender....resistor box still gets hot/

you must be of the Millennial gen, or maybe just surrounded by it, so you need a NANNY to tell you when to put your lights on.

a nanny when to put your brakes on.

I stand by what I said. The auto lights are adjustable.

They're adjustable, but not good enough. I've set it to the least sensitive setting and tunnels/woods will still trigger unwanted on/offs.

I had no idea the wear-and-tear from on/offs is actually a non-negligible thing. Stopped using auto today :wish:

I will have had my TSX for 8 years this May. I have always set the lights to "Auto". They are set to med sensitivity. They come on when in tunnels, parking garages, etc. So far no issues with my HID's.

lol I said that OEM's generally guarantee 1million cycles (sometimes even more). Trust me when I say we go through many many many tests to ensure the lifespan of the parts. Leaving it on Auto is completely fine. It was designed to handle everyday situations.

Back to auto they go! But I do manually flick the stalk off/on when it misbehaves, regardless of component lifespan. It's sometimes annoying to see my map switch from white bg to black bg (and vice versa).

THIS is a good reason not to use auto hahaha

I headlights are always fully ON. I come from a background of driving tiny cars. The TSX is by far, the largest car that I've ever bought. Huge. Ship-like, even, as compared to my previous/other cars.

It helps to be a little more visible. So...by habit...lights always fully on as soon as I get in the car.

:shrug: HID wear. Bulbs every 6-10 years instead of 10-15.

I call BS. 75k on my 2011, 65k on my 2004, 25k on my wife's RDX, and 105k on my S2000 (granted, no auto headlights).

Never had a single headlight problem. It's a non-issue.


The only time I take my car off of Auto is when I need to turn the lights on for rain/snow and it's too bright for them to come on on their own.

glad that OEM lasts that long... I would not turn on the auto hid if TSX had led or hid day running light...

The 09+ TSX has daytime running lights....

At least in the North American market.

But not LED. Unless one retrofits them.

Im accustomed to turning them on and off myself I actually get annoyed when the go on automatically... I hear auto can give trouble in cold weather if your battery is close to dying
